Muted? You don’t say. Personally, I call it status quo because doubling the cost means it won’t get built.
Not so much approval, as death by a thousand cuts.

The ability to export Canadian oil and gas is a national security issue. Canada has a failed industrial strategy in Ontario. The energy industry in the West has provided what growth the country has enjoyed over the past 15 years. This success was despite Ottawa not because of it. Today that industry is threatened by misguided easterners who feel threatened by lost influence, by foreign funded envros, and by the growth of USA production of both products. Eastern USA gas is now replacing western Canadian gas in Ontario and Quebec.
LNG in Rupert really has only one party faintly interested in investing. Projects are not currently viable as world supply has increased (surprise the USA is exporting LNG). If the PETRONAS project moves forward production comes on stream in 2021 when demand might be increasing. The 190 ‘caveats’ are likely more flexible than acknowledged.
In lieu of any other options I suspect Ottawa will be forced into endorsing a oil pipeline to tidewater. This will be especially true with a Trump election. Combine that with an inevitable recession and real estate price collapse. Canada is heading towards the abyss as the progressives admire the trauma teacher’s performances. Sad!
Buy USA and global equities. No Canada.
Donald Trump has made the claim that American Democrats know nothing of business and as a result they are ruining their economy.
If he were in Canada he would point out that our politicians are two faced liars, embracing global warming and a low carbon future but back-stopped by increases in fossil fuel production via LNG transport and piped crude.
Politicians are literally ruining the Canadian resource economy right now because they will succeed with carbon taxes and fail with the LNG financing and pipeline approvals.
I agree with your first part about the threatened Easterners but Canada will not be forced to build a pipeline to tidewater because of a Trump victory.
If Trump is elected he will move quickly to better secure America’s energy supply. He may also develop an export market of refined crude. Either way the USA does not benefit from a Canadian western tidewater port.
The only American solution to Canada’s energy problems is to pipe raw crude to US refineries to a) ensure a stable supply of energy for America and b) to supply US refineries for raw product for processing and export overseas. This keeps us reliant on the US – captive actually.
Canada needs a western tidewater port for both crude and LNG export if it is to maximize the benefit of its western provinces fossil fuel production. I bet 20-30 years will go by before either will happen.

Federal “approval” with all these conditions is either cynically deceitful killing of the project (which, at this point is already dead) or naivety in the extreme. The anti-industrial revolution is alive and well in Canada. There are far too many parasites (eg. FNs) and primitive obstructionists to allow major economic resource development. LNG is dead in Canada for the foreseeable future. It will take an active mass of impoverished or scared shitless voters to restore reason to the governing class who have adopted green theology by popular demand. Canada is committing economic and cultural suicide. The Spawn is merely a symptom.

BTW the new Harper lite version of the CPC is a joke, imho. With McKay out, at least for the time being, they have no chance.

I had a fun argument tonight with a man from Saskatchewan, a newly (2014) graduate from University of Saskatchewan. This is one of his arguments in favour of, I guess a carbon tax: “Eve Stevens That’s right the climate changes itself. Sometimes it has massive amounts of CO2 and goes through a period of tropical heat. Then it filters it out and we have ice ages. The world operates with the laws of physics, which means we can and are artificially driving climate change. Connect the dots, or are you too willfully ignorant to do so?
My point earlier is either you don’t care at all which isn’t true because you wouldn’t be in this debate. Meaning the only other possibility is you do care, you care about yourself at the expense of all others. You don’t care if the world burns, as long as you lived a good life.
