Meet the new boss:
The air base at Incirlik, Turkey, used by the U.S.-led coalition to launch airstrikes and other missions against the Islamic State group, remains without power four days after a failed coup. Officials say there has been no move yet to turn it back on.
The U.S. has been relying on back-up generators to run base facilities and continue flight operations out of Incirlik.
Around 50,000 soldiers, police, judges, civil servants and teachers have been suspended or detained since the coup attempt, stirring tensions across the country of 80 million which borders Syria’s chaos and is a Western ally against Islamic State.
“Ally”.

Was a WESTERN ALLY against Islamic states.
I wonder if a lot of military leaders won’t soon come to the opinion that a coup is necessary. Had they killed Erdogan, shot down every demonstrator, and negotiated with the generals not involved, Turkey would be free from religious intolerance as Ataturk intended.
Something is fishy about this whole thing.
When the US invaded Iraq in 2003 and was denied transit through Turkey, that was it. GWB said if you’re not with us, you’re against us. Turkey indicated at that time that they were against us. Russia and for Soviet states allowed use of airbases to go into Afganistan. Turkey is not an ally with Erdogan and his like.
Enter a treaty with Russia wrt Syria and see the Turks shit themselves.
Won’t happen with Obama because we don’t know what side he is on either.

World’s leading statesman,PM Justin Trudeau, calls on Erdogan to respect the democratic process in dealing with the recent coup attempt.
This is reminiscent of the old Western movies in which the Sheriff would declare,” first,we’ll give ‘im a fair trial, then we’ll hang ‘im”.
I expect Mr.Erdogan is as vengeful as every other ME leader, regardless of the Dauphin’s sensitivities.
Hmmmm. Locking up teachers. Think we could include part-time substitute drama teachers?
Actually russia is as much an enemy as is Turkey. But you are absolutely right about 2003. In fact Turkey has been becoming more and more hardcore koranimal with every election in the last two decades. When each subsequent cohort of young turks gets to vote they turn out to be more radical than the previous one and vote accordingly. Not so long ago Turkey was a reliable western ally and the only friend Israel had in the region. No more. Islamization of the country took care of that.
Also Turks genuinely want to exterminate Kurds, and see them as the key enemy in region. Hence support for ISIS and increasing hostility towards the West who the Kurds hope to eventually maybe become their true ally (Kurds today remind me of Poles during WWII, sheepishly hoping that their loyalty and the debt of blood will matter to cynical west).
It is looking more and more as though thermonuclear war is the only solution for Islam and the Middle East … tactical and precise of course … wouldn’t want to harm any one of Obama, Hillary, or J.F.K erry’s BFF’s
I disagree Colonista. I do not consider Russia as an enemy; yes, a competitor, but not an enemy. I am amused by the rush for the current liberal government to prove its willingness to put Canadian troops in harms way by garrisoning Latvia, in Baltic wherever. Anywhere far away from real trouble spots.
Ditto Canuckguy.
Is Erdogan smart enough to encourage the military to launch an unsuccessful coup?
Did the military misjudge the opportunity?
Was Obama’s support a turning point for the coup?
I certainly don’t buy the patriotic, democratic Turks laying down in front of tanks to halt the coup. Muslims don’t believe in or want democracy and it appears that Turkey is roughly divided between secularists and Islamists.
Certainly there is going to be lot less democracy in Turkey now.
Ergodan has two weapons: Membership of NATO and that US air base; also, millions of “migrants” he can use to invade Europe.
I think Ergodan was falling to the coup then saw his way out and made threats to the US and Merkel.
“There are a few dozen U.S. B61 nuclear gravity bombs stored at Incirlik. Does it seem like a good idea to station American nuclear weapons at an air base commanded by someone who may have just helped bomb his own country’s parliament?”

Wait either it is in harm’s way or away from hot spots you can’t have it both ways.
Sorry will always disagree about russia. rusia is as vile and dangerous as Islam. You want temporary truce with russia? Then throw Eastern European allies under the bus. Just don’t pretend that you;re doing anything else…
And then get ready to talk to Pootin about arctic. russia never stops. The mooselimb on russian civil war can’t come soon enough.
They were not “patriotic, democratic Turks” they were mooselimb koranimal islamists protecting one of their own against secular military. They were genuine and spontaneous, just for all thew wrong reasons.
stick to talking about aircraft, as you no nothing about them, butt don’t sound as uninform as you do on this topic.
Still butthurt over the spanking you received months ago?
No point in responding to trolls, it merely encourages them. They’re like misbehaving children doing anything for the attention they crave. Their comments add nothing useful to the discussion.
Oh look NME picked up a Chihuahua Minime. How precious.
