The trouble with picking a bigger hill is that by the time you decide which hill is big enough you’ve already ceded so much ground that you are unable to recognize the hill that you think you’d fight for. Bilingualism, metrification, abortion, multi-culturalism, citizenship, turban, hijab, burka, SSM, capital punishment, property rights, self-defence, armed forces, foreign aid, immigration quotas, carbon tax, FN accountability, etc, etc, the list goes on and on, not one was worth fighting for at the time but they have all combined to change the Canadian culture. Are we better for it? There was a spark of hope with Grey and Manning and with Harper we saw that hope grow into a small flame, now it seems to be extinguished. As with some of you my political donations have just hit a brick wall. A party devoid of principals and willing to cede their position doesn’t need my meager contribution.
Who will be the leader of the New Western Reform Party to try and compete against the eternal Liberal Party of Canada Government. The kids that pushed this were not even alive in 1993.

IMHO: same-sex marriage is a religious issue – not a political one. The only role government should have is protecting individual freedoms. The CPC did well to drop this from their platform.
Don’t agree with same-sex marriage? Pray harder. Bible thump more. Whatever. But why use government to pass laws restricting the freedoms of others? Did Jesus go around trying to get governments onside with making sin illegal or to have them remove temptation? I don’t remember reading anything along those lines. Instead, it was always about Jesus and his apostles inspiring individuals to freely choose to follow gods word – not forcing them to do it.
The CPC will never see another thin dime from me. As others have noted it will be taken over by laurentian elite freindlies. The LE will never again allow another leader like Harper to lead the conservatives in Canada.
The most glaringly obvious reason to oppose gay marriage has little to do with the bible.
Traditional marriage must be the only definition for once you change the definition to accommodate 2 women or 2 men, how do you kick the door shut on 3 men or 3 women. Or 1 woman and 3 men or 1 man and as many women as he wants to marry?
How can the courts ok one variation but not others? Can’t be opposed on the question of morality because that was not allowed in opposing gay marriage.
The reason to oppose gay marriage is not because you oppose gay marriage per se, but because you oppose polygamy or any other of the many deviations which must follow.
It’s like the Tories want to fail.
Everything is a non-issue until it is.
If same-sex marriage was a trivial matter, why was there an effort to re-define marriage as opposed to simply expanding inheritance laws and the like?

We already have the Liberals and the NDP who support gay and other ”off beat” unions! One thing positive about the Liberals, they have a leader who is married with children, and in a Christian union. John brooks , I understand that it is a tough issue especially when it’s your own child but God does not care in that regard, sin is sin and as long as your daughter and her partner have in repentant hearts and continue to willingly and knowingly sin fully beleive ing that it is normal by a father who has convinced himself that some how Jesus was ok with homosexuals so there for homosexuals are ok . Remember this.
My sin is no different than your daughters no better or worse the difference is I acknowledge the sin I am aware of and the sin I am not aware of and I repent of it I have a penitent heart and I despise my sin known and unknown.
Gods judgement is perfect and perfectly just. No one not one person will avoid it not a muslim , or a gay, or a yazidi a pediphile, a murderer, a thief , an arsonist, Ect Ect . There is a way out though by putting Christ at the centre and repenting . You need to simply express to your daughter that this is sinful according to Jesus himself and as long as she continues in this way she will be judged. And so will you.
This is not only about gay, it’s about sin period and we either accept what God has given us to guide us in our lives in the scriptures and through Christ or we don’t . Very disappointing. So the CPC needs to understand something. As they ‘evolve’ from their positions on social issues – they are moving into positions occupied by other ‘parties’. I – as a supporter of traditional marriage, am not moving with the CPC. When a move is made from a certain position to another – that vacates their previous position for another entity to occupy that position. If you are having trouble following this – just look at the PCP of Alberta. Conservative Party of Canada – I am now waiting for whatever is going to occupy the space you just vacated.
Paul: I read you loud and clear as I do John Brooks. I have a niece who is gay, and I still love her. But the Conservative Party of Canada is not a person or a relative, it’s a party that represents my political beliefs and ambitions. The CPC cannot sin, nor can it repent. It’s supposed to represent the values of it’s members. That’s why we all went from the Reform or the old line Progressive Party, to have our members represent our values. My MP is a Christian, who once replaced the pastor at a Christian church when that person was not available. I don’t know what side he took at the convention, however I am hoping he’s on the same track as he was when I voted for him, and when I contributed to his cause.

Personally, and speaking only for myself, I would very much like to see government out of marriage altogether. No civil unions, no marriage certificates, nothing. No control, no regulation, no input whatsoever.
Gay marriages are about one thing: money. Who gets the Baby Bonus check. Who gets to claim what on their taxes. Who gets visitation rights. Who can inherit.
This, all of this, should not be a subject of government regulation. Government cannot tell a parson or priest “you must marry these two people.” Or three people, or two men and a pony, or a woman, two chips and a dolphin. Likewise, they can’t tell him not to. This is not an issue that they should be having anything to say about.
You take the money out of it, and as with most things the number of people wanting to deface the honor of matrimony with their kink will shrink to nothing.

Same-sex marriages performed by the state are not a problem. What would be a problem is to coerce religious institutions into performing them against their will, which would be a serious violation of freedom of religion. Note though that people can form or join religious institutions that will cater to the gay community if they wish. Note also that state officials cannot decline to perform secular civil marriages for same-sex couples, despite their religious beliefs. They are not being asked to do so within their church, only for the state.
The whole issue of gays, sexual orientation and identity is not all-or-nothing. One can agree with some parts of it and need not agree with others.
For starters, a bakery has the right to reject making products for same-sex couples, or anyone else for that matter, if they don’t want to. “A person’s rights are not violated by a private individual’s refusal to deal with him” — Ayn Rand
I also reject the notion that a man should be allowed to use a women’s washroom just because he wishes he were a woman. The problem isn’t so much the “transgender” people as it is peeping Toms and other sexual deviates who would take advantage of it in the absence of any requirement of proof of being transgender, such as a medical certificate. Sex-change surgeries are possible; when a person is a significant distance along that path (I would suggest, approaching halfway), then they can switch.
However, the bathroom issue is mostly one of property rights. The building owner gets to make the rules. The government does not have the right to coerce him into changing his rules.

Marriage should not be the business of the state. From which it follows that political parties are just flapping their gums when they resolve one way or another.
You may have an opinion on what is a valid marriage according to the Bible or whatever text you live by. Great! But please don’t demand that the state enforce your opinion. The state should get out of the marriage business all together.

Far as I’m concerned the issue isn’t gay marriage, but the rights of a particular preacher, church, cake-maker, hall-renter, to say “NO”. That’s the thing I want Conservatives to deal with.
And by extension, the right to say NO to anyone who wants to board an airplane, drive a car, write a cheque, etc., with her face covered.
gay marriage is the razor sharp edge of a gigantic wedge. a French woman was allowed to marry here deceased fiance. give it some time and marriage will include inanimate objects, favorite pets, multiple men and women and trannies and whatevers, all married to each other. group unions. all legal, sanctioned and binding with benefits and parental rights (oh it gets complicated, the winner is the one with the best lawyer). one precedent setting the stage for another.

As a practical political reality the gay marriage debate was over when the (almost all catholic) supreme court ruled it so. The legal system is completely left wing – there is zero chance of getting enough conservative judges on the supreme court to overturn the ruling. Any new marriage law brought forward will be challenged and lose.
This battle needs to be won in the cultural sphere before it ever has any chance of being changed. Political parties do not change the culture but react to it.
See, part of the problem conservatives have is people continuing to talk about ‘sin’ and ‘god’s forgiveness’ and the ‘holy retribution’ that awaits our enemies … that sounds like the Art Bell Version of conservatism. To at least half of Canada and probably a good third of the USA, that is ‘talking to you imaginary friend’. It sounds crazy.

First time I’ve been so disgusted with Christians really. My oldest daughter came out last summer, and after reading the Taliban like comments towards John I believe because his daughter was gay and has kids, I really regret telling my daughter and I quote “I don’t care if your gay- fine live your life . However you need to let people have their own opinions about your lifestyle and deal with it.” I’d refine that now to “if they are bible thumping Christians thinking your a demon and unworthy of being blessed feel free to kick them right in the crotch.”

Obviously this is a hot issue because of all the comments. I don’t like the decision but it’s not a hill to die on for the conservatives. Just the title Conservative congers pictures of bible thumping/religious radicals for some people so this may be a step in the right direction to change their image and focus on what matters to people to be prosperous and have a decent life. I do respect people’s choices and the freedom to choose and to speak freely regarding their “opinions”. Homosexuals will never convince me they are “normal” in the sexual way and I do not support same sex marriage as being the norm. But having said that they are human beings and deserve the same care and consideration as all people in our society. And getting married gives them all the rights and responsibilities of other married couples so welcome to the quagmire of marital bliss and responsibility and maybe divorce and settlement. . Moreover, the conservatives have to appeal to the “young” and they don’t have a problem with same sex marriage because it’s been drummed into their psyche from the first day of school even though there are many many people who do not support same sex marriage and teaching their kids that this is normal. Our culture is “secular” and religion is on it’s way out and the new religion and god is “government”. And the head is the supreme court judges who often interfere in legislative decisions according to their interpretation of that god awful “charter of rights”. Welcome to new world.

Because Christians believe in the Bible as the Word of God, it does not make them “bible thumpers” and I could be wrong but it does sound like someone who attends a mainline church. You cannot force the rest of us to support your daughter’s life choice. My aunt had to live with the fact that her eldest was a lesbian back in the day when the word was never heard in our community. Sure, we had a couple of men everyone was positive were homosexuals who went to New York to meet others, but it was live and let live. But that was before it was shoved down our throats by the activists. Now it’s us saying, leave us and our families alone.

IMHO: same-sex marriage is a religious issue – not a political one. The only role government should have is protecting individual freedoms. The CPC did well to drop this from their platform.
Don’t agree with same-sex marriage? Pray harder. Bible thump more. Whatever. But why use government to pass laws restricting the freedoms of others? Did Jesus go around trying to get governments onside with making sin illegal or to have them remove temptation? I don’t remember reading anything along those lines. Instead, it was always about Jesus and his apostles inspiring individuals to freely choose to follow gods word – not forcing them to do it.
The CPC will never see another thin dime from me. As others have noted it will be taken over by laurentian elite freindlies. The LE will never again allow another leader like Harper to lead the conservatives in Canada.
The most glaringly obvious reason to oppose gay marriage has little to do with the bible.
Traditional marriage must be the only definition for once you change the definition to accommodate 2 women or 2 men, how do you kick the door shut on 3 men or 3 women. Or 1 woman and 3 men or 1 man and as many women as he wants to marry?
How can the courts ok one variation but not others? Can’t be opposed on the question of morality because that was not allowed in opposing gay marriage.
The reason to oppose gay marriage is not because you oppose gay marriage per se, but because you oppose polygamy or any other of the many deviations which must follow.
It’s like the Tories want to fail.

If same-sex marriage was a trivial matter, why was there an effort to re-define marriage as opposed to simply expanding inheritance laws and the like?

John brooks , I understand that it is a tough issue especially when it’s your own child but God does not care in that regard, sin is sin and as long as your daughter and her partner have in repentant hearts and continue to willingly and knowingly sin fully beleive ing that it is normal by a father who has convinced himself that some how Jesus was ok with homosexuals so there for homosexuals are ok . Gods judgement is perfect and perfectly just. No one not one person will avoid it not a muslim , or a gay, or a yazidi a pediphile, a murderer, a thief , an arsonist, Ect Ect . There is a way out though by putting Christ at the centre and repenting . You need to simply express to your daughter that this is sinful according to Jesus himself and as long as she continues in this way she will be judged. And so will you.

Very disappointing. So the CPC needs to understand something. As they ‘evolve’ from their positions on social issues – they are moving into positions occupied by other ‘parties’. I – as a supporter of traditional marriage, am not moving with the CPC. When a move is made from a certain position to another – that vacates their previous position for another entity to occupy that position. If you are having trouble following this – just look at the PCP of Alberta. Conservative Party of Canada – I am now waiting for whatever is going to occupy the space you just vacated.
Paul: I read you loud and clear as I do John Brooks. I have a niece who is gay, and I still love her. But the Conservative Party of Canada is not a person or a relative, it’s a party that represents my political beliefs and ambitions. The CPC cannot sin, nor can it repent. It’s supposed to represent the values of it’s members. That’s why we all went from the Reform or the old line Progressive Party, to have our members represent our values. My MP is a Christian, who once replaced the pastor at a Christian church when that person was not available. I don’t know what side he took at the convention, however I am hoping he’s on the same track as he was when I voted for him, and when I contributed to his cause.

Personally, and speaking only for myself, I would very much like to see government out of marriage altogether. No civil unions, no marriage certificates, nothing. No control, no regulation, no input whatsoever.
Gay marriages are about one thing: money. Who gets the Baby Bonus check. Who gets to claim what on their taxes. Who gets visitation rights. Who can inherit.
This, all of this, should not be a subject of government regulation. Government cannot tell a parson or priest “you must marry these two people.” Or three people, or two men and a pony, or a woman, two chips and a dolphin. Likewise, they can’t tell him not to. This is not an issue that they should be having anything to say about.
You take the money out of it, and as with most things the number of people wanting to deface the honor of matrimony with their kink will shrink to nothing.

Same-sex marriages performed by the state are not a problem. What would be a problem is to coerce religious institutions into performing them against their will, which would be a serious violation of freedom of religion. Note though that people can form or join religious institutions that will cater to the gay community if they wish. Note also that state officials cannot decline to perform secular civil marriages for same-sex couples, despite their religious beliefs. They are not being asked to do so within their church, only for the state.
The whole issue of gays, sexual orientation and identity is not all-or-nothing. One can agree with some parts of it and need not agree with others.

I also reject the notion that a man should be allowed to use a women’s washroom just because he wishes he were a woman. The problem isn’t so much the “transgender” people as it is peeping Toms and other sexual deviates who would take advantage of it in the absence of any requirement of proof of being transgender, such as a medical certificate. Sex-change surgeries are possible; when a person is a significant distance along that path (I would suggest, approaching halfway), then they can switch.
However, the bathroom issue is mostly one of property rights. The building owner gets to make the rules. The government does not have the right to coerce him into changing his rules.

Far as I’m concerned the issue isn’t gay marriage, but the rights of a particular preacher, church, cake-maker, hall-renter, to say “NO”. That’s the thing I want Conservatives to deal with.
And by extension, the right to say NO to anyone who wants to board an airplane, drive a car, write a cheque, etc., with her face covered.
gay marriage is the razor sharp edge of a gigantic wedge. a French woman was allowed to marry here deceased fiance. give it some time and marriage will include inanimate objects, favorite pets, multiple men and women and trannies and whatevers, all married to each other. group unions. all legal, sanctioned and binding with benefits and parental rights (oh it gets complicated, the winner is the one with the best lawyer). one precedent setting the stage for another.

As a practical political reality the gay marriage debate was over when the (almost all catholic) supreme court ruled it so. The legal system is completely left wing – there is zero chance of getting enough conservative judges on the supreme court to overturn the ruling. Any new marriage law brought forward will be challenged and lose.
This battle needs to be won in the cultural sphere before it ever has any chance of being changed. Political parties do not change the culture but react to it.
See, part of the problem conservatives have is people continuing to talk about ‘sin’ and ‘god’s forgiveness’ and the ‘holy retribution’ that awaits our enemies … that sounds like the Art Bell Version of conservatism. To at least half of Canada and probably a good third of the USA, that is ‘talking to you imaginary friend’. It sounds crazy.

First time I’ve been so disgusted with Christians really. My oldest daughter came out last summer, and after reading the Taliban like comments towards John I believe because his daughter was gay and has kids, I really regret telling my daughter and I quote “I don’t care if your gay- fine live your life . However you need to let people have their own opinions about your lifestyle and deal with it.” I’d refine that now to “if they are bible thumping Christians thinking your a demon and unworthy of being blessed feel free to kick them right in the crotch.”

I do respect people’s choices and the freedom to choose and to speak freely regarding their “opinions”. Homosexuals will never convince me they are “normal” in the sexual way and I do not support same sex marriage as being the norm. But having said that they are human beings and deserve the same care and consideration as all people in our society. And getting married gives them all the rights and responsibilities of other married couples so welcome to the quagmire of marital bliss and responsibility and maybe divorce and settlement. . Moreover, the conservatives have to appeal to the “young” and they don’t have a problem with same sex marriage because it’s been drummed into their psyche from the first day of school even though there are many many people who do not support same sex marriage and teaching their kids that this is normal. Our culture is “secular” and religion is on it’s way out and the new religion and god is “government”. And the head is the supreme court judges who often interfere in legislative decisions according to their interpretation of that god awful “charter of rights”. Welcome to new world.

Because Christians believe in the Bible as the Word of God, it does not make them “bible thumpers” and I could be wrong but it does sound like someone who attends a mainline church. You cannot force the rest of us to support your daughter’s life choice. We don’t want to hear about it; we don’t want our children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren hearing about the LGT lifestyle non-stop. My aunt had to live with the fact that her eldest was a lesbian back in the day when the word was never heard in our community. Sure, we had a couple of men everyone was positive were homosexuals who went to New York to meet others, but it was live and let live. But that was before it was shoved down our throats by the activists. Now it’s us saying, leave us and our families alone.
