Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Great article.
wow.
maybe Josef Goebbels learned his trade from these liars instead of pioneering the ‘keep hammering away and toss in some widely known actual truths’ science of propaganda.
This doesn’t surprise me at all. This writer Al Stump who started the lies about Cobb was likely a leftwing progressive. They think nothing of lying to advance their agenda.
Yes. That was a great read. Hopefully the author will publish a book that may finally set the record straight.
It’s too bad that a ‘definitive’ documentary such as the one that Ken Burns made may have already sealed his fate as a monster.
Wow is right! This is just more evidence that you can believe almost nothing you read and half of what you are shown.
“The sports biography is settled” … eh dear readers ? Shame on “Saint” Ken Burns for so eloquently perpetuating the LIES about Ty Cobb. It must have been simply too tempting for Burns to seruptitiously assassinate Cobb’s character, because the story of Cobb fulfills EVERY leftist charicature of a hard-working, dedicated, successful, conservative, white male, “That” kind of a man HAS to be ridiculed and destroyed. So he is portrayed as; mean, uncaring, gun-toting, violent, cheater, … and the coup de gras … RACIST ! No wonder Ken Burns so willingly accepted and perpetuated the common myth that Ty Cobb was … an embarrassment to baseball.
Wikipedia seems to have a fairly balanced description of Cobb and even notes that Cobb’s biographer Al Stump sensationalized and fictionalized his story of Cobb:
“Cobb’s legacy, which includes a large college scholarship fund for Georgia residents financed by his early investments in Coca-Cola and General Motors, has been tarnished by allegations of racism and violence, largely stemming from a couple of biographies that were released following his death.[18][19] Cobb’s reputation as an extremely violent man was fanned by his first biographer, sportswriter Al Stump whose stories about Cobb have been discredited as sensationalized and, in some part, proven to be entirely fictional.[20] while Cobb’s views on race evolved and mellowed after his retirement from baseball.”
Wiki also notes that the story of Cobb beating on a black grounds-keeper and his wife as relayed by catcher Charles “Boss” Schmidt was likely made it up completely by Schmidt. Maybe the truth is coming out.
It’s a fascinating story and reminiscent of the hatchet job done on Captain Bligh of the Bounty. The ill reputation accorded to Bligh arose from the rantings of one of Fletcher Christian’s relatives who was, I believe, a lawyer and who was working hard to restore the reputation of his family since being related to a mutineer was, at that time, a severe mark of shame. Since the mutiny couldn’t be denied the best line of defence was to portray Bligh as a monster who had pushed Christian beyond human limits. The best historical evidence is rather more prosaic. Christian was a ne’er-do-well who had been given a chance to make good by Bligh. Christian and a small group of men on the ship got into the grog, decided they wanted to return to Tahiti, and on a spur of the moment decision seized some firearms and mutinied. Once they’d done that, they were committed since mutiny under those circumstances was a capital offence. Years later, Hollywood took the sensationalized version and ran with it. The rest is (non) history. No serious naval historian nowadays buys the Hollywood version. For those interested in the actual story, in many ways far more fascinating than the movie version, I’d recommend the book “Bligh of the Bounty”. It includes some fascinating details on life in the RN in Bligh’s time, including the daily beer ration — prodigious!
the thing that utterly and permanently changed my mind about Bligh the ‘tyrant’ was the FACT under his iron willed leadership, the loyal crew tossed into the lifeboat managed to travel THOUSANDS of miles of ocean and were saved.
it was a damnable harsh life on the sea back in the days of sail. how many 100+ thousands of them never reached port on that last trip, over the centuries?
hollywood SPECIALIZES in fiction. time and again ‘inspired by’ and ‘based on’ is the cue that what follows is unmitigated crapola.
“people believe what they want to believe”. and hollyweird knows that quite well. the lies in a big grossing movie can and will displace the truth of a story. the los angeles elites care not a whit. I have a theory they actually play a ‘game’ with each other, boasting in certain circles how well they pulled the wool over the public’s eyes and mangled the truth to the point it is forever damaged, their manifestation of the corrupting nature of power.
and the media follow suit like a script. *every time* I had *personal* first hand knowledge of a news story over the better part of FIVE DECADES, the newspapers ALWAYS without fail got it wrong it some way.
remember the glowing reviews of that puke thing ‘blair witch project’? Time magazine was/is OWNED by the SAME outfit that owned the studio.
example 2: did Cass Elliot choke on a sandwich? yes or no. answer the question and then see for yourself here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cass_Elliot#Death
Good points, 60, all reinforced by the fact that Bligh’s treatment of his crews, although at times apparently inconsistent in matters of discipline which fed a scintilla of truth to the myth, resulted in one of the highest if not the highest rate of survival of his crews among ships of the RN during the long sea voyages on which he was captain. If you wanted to survive at sea in the RN of those days you tried to sign on with Bligh. The fact that Bounty was too small to have a complement of royal marines who would have been responsible for enforcement of discipline and protection of the captain has also been advanced by some historians as a reason for the mutineers’ actions and success.
Wow. Thanks for the Ty Cobb story and the new to me information about Bligh. Damn, I love and enjoy this site.

Same as nobody understanding why Richard Nixon was disgraced. Most people actually believe he did something to warrant impeachment (he resigned instead). His was an error of omission. Once he determined what happened, he didn’t rat out his friends. As it was all media hype, I’m sure most people wouldn’t really believe that was so little to the Nixon story.
This Al Stump sounds like a real piece of work. However with his flair for hyperbole, tendency towards sensationalism, complete disregard for the truth and general journalistic laziness, he would fit in nicely with any of today’s large newspaper chains. And the CBC.
60something, I actually liked the Blair Witch Project. Scared me so bad I slept with the light on for the next week.
Ty Cobb? Didn’t he title his autobiography, “I Couldn’t Defeat An Ear of Corn”?
