Laughing Their Heads Off

Kathy Shaidle: Am I really alone among all the writers making fun of Bono this week to note that, were satire really the industrial-strength stupidity solvent he thinks it is, the U2 singer himself would have been reduced to a small, stubborn carpet stain ages ago?

  1. OT but why is it on Taki’s blog, that even when there is a subject that any sentient being could just smile in agreement the legion of anti-semites still manage to arrive and spoil the fun.
I love Kathy Shaidle’s contributions there but the comments are something else.

  2. Kind of related: the underbitten, constipated Springsteen is some kind of hero for taking a stand against a group based on his moral and political values by refusing to do business with them (not performing in North Carolina) because this group believes that people should have the right to refuse to do business based on a moral and political belief.

  3. Bozo from U2 is a douchebag who has never said a word to alleviate suffering, but he’s made a handsome profit from it, he’s a nasty piece of work.

  4. Hey, thanks for the link, and yeah, the comments at Taki’s are best ignored. This one has almost 400 already and yes, they mostly concern the JOOOOOOZ!!!!! It’s par for the paleo course…

  5. “OT but why is it on Taki’s blog, that even when there is a subject that any sentient being could just smile in agreement the legion of anti-semites still manage to arrive and spoil the fun.”
Yup. I feel the same way. And Taki himself can sometimes be unpleasant in that way too, letting slip the odd remark or two.
Which is too bad because the blog also has Theodore Dalrymple (Anthony Daniels) writing for it.
(I don’t mind Shaidle in moderation. But she does go off on mad tangents.)

  6. In other news, several African leaders gathered in Cairo to provide advice to Bono and U2 on how best to reform and manage the band…

  7. Judging by the man’s constant need for welding glasses, he obviously sees the world from a higher and brighter vantage point.
That or he has mistakenly welded something closed in his own head.

  8. “If the claims Bono and other twats (right and left) make for satire were sound, the offices of Charlie Hebdo would have been awash with Muslim blood rather than their own.”
    1) Islamists hate comedy, humour, anything that might evoke a smile.
    2) Because Charlie Hebdo was the exception rather than the rule among humourists, they were easy to target and silence. In effect the others have committed intellectual suicide to the extent they don’t give Islam equal treatment in their work.

  9. Bono’s comment fall in line with the one from our esteemed PM that if you kill your enemies, they win.
You have to wonder where there airheads come up with this stuff sometimes. In Bono’s case it just proves that because you may be a good entertainer??? that doesn’t mean your opinion of everything else is worth anything. Celebrities seem to get automatic validity whenever they say something regardless of how idiotic.

  10. And all this time I was wondering whether everyone else thought he was an asshole. A big check on that one. He is almost as annoying as the Free the Children knob.

  11. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.

  12. Bono apparently has taken a page from Johnny Kerry’s “serenade a terrorist” policy. Because, you’ve got a friend.

  13. Am I the only one who noticed, that during Bono’s humorous testimony before congress, he has seemingly lost his Irish accent ? Seriously, he almost sounded like a Southern Californian. I suspect it it because he spends so much time in the halls of the United Nations. And probably because he is ashamed of his backward, working class, Irish roots. After all, a wealthy man sporting those designer frames cannot sound like a stupid Irish git. What an embarrassment to his people.

  14. Contrary to all the snark on this thread, I happen to understand a bit of this man’s heart.
Sure, Bono is an excellent entertainer and showman, but he I actually trying to do some good in the world thru his celebrity status. We see and hear the media soundbites, but just like any of us on this blog, we have at times said things which we know were taken out of context because we are not sitting face-to-face and in a discussion where can read a person.
Take the whole speech and place what has been highlighted and place it into context. The media will spin and we get caught in it.
One of the things which I totally agree with which Bono said was the introduction of the “Jubilee Year”. Wipe out all debt every 50 years. Lenders will be more wise as to how and who to lend to.
The Bankstas hated the plan as their profits are more important than the people. The money they lend is to serve the dreams and ambitions of the borrowers, not be a prison that holds some of these counties in poverty with no means or hope of repayment. It is about control, and the borrower is slave to the lender. We were created for freedom, not this type of slavery.

  15. My wife points out that Chancellor Angela Merkel seems to take humour and satire very seriously – seriously enough to try, and probably eventually to jail, one of her law-abiding German citizens. But what does she know – she was just involved with Communist agitprop back in her East German days.
A long long time ago, Sir Ronald Storrs in Egypt was very much concerned with placing satirical cartoons in the Egyptian press – see his memoirs.
Just because the US government doesn’t see the point, doesn’t mean that there is no point.

  16. “The money they lend is to serve the dreams and ambitions of the borrowers, not be a prison that holds some of these counties in poverty with no means or hope of repayment.”
I disagree. The money they(Banksters/Lenders) lend is created out of thin air and they lend it to governments precisely to enslave the people.
Bono’s ‘Jubilee Year’ is about forgiving the debt that our 1st world governments borrowed and lent to 3rd world governments in our name.
Our governments wouldn’t renounce our debt to their lenders, we the taxpayers would still be on the hook for it.

  17. “Kathy Shaidle is right insofar that satirists need protection – otherwise they end up dead, as did the people working for Charly Hebdo.”
We owe nothing to satirists that we don’t owe to every other citizen in a free society: the security of their person from unlawful physical threats.

  18. Agreed. It can be more difficult to obtain for some than for others. Still, to argue from your point of view, a great many non-satirists have been killed by Muslim terrorists, and had they been properly protected the satirists would have been protected de facto.
And it is true that the best way to change a man’s mind is to blow his head off.

  19. Contrary to all the snark on this thread, I happen to understand a bit of this man’s heart.
Oh, bull. He is just another liberal trying to assuage his guilt over his wallowing in money, and covering for his blatant hypocrisy; his mouthings are nothing more than the fashionable “progressive” boilerplate du jour.
Lenders will be more wise as to how and who to lend to.
When they were, they were accused of racism and forced to make bad loans with the obvious results that followed.
Bono is a should shut up and sing, better still, just shut up.

  20. “…The money they lend is to serve the dreams and ambitions of the borrowers, …”
No, the money they lend is to return interest by which the lenders profit. The money that borrowers borrow is to serve the dreams and ambitions of the borrowers, and it is entirely up to the borrowers to make that work for them.
Serves the lenders right if they screw up and can’t get their money back, but they are in it to make money, and borrowers should never delude themselves about that.

  21. IF Glacierman’s meaning is taken in terms of the context of what Bono’s political interest and effort is, then the context is 1st world Western Governments borrowing money(government has no money of it’s own) in the name of it’s tax paying citizens.
Bono wants these governments to forgive the debt that these 1st world governments have over the 3rd world governments that they “lent” to.
    No, no, no, Nooo!
Overlooked here, is that it is not the actual PRIME lenders under Bono’s Jubilee plan who lent the money to 1st world governments who would be forgiving the debt to 1st world governments, but rather the 1st world governments forgiving the debt to the 3rd world governments that they “lent” to.
Again, according to Bono’s plan, it would be 1st world governments forgiving the debt to 3rd world governments that they “lent” to, debt that 1st world governments acquired in the name of their taxpaying citizens.
All the while, these 1st world governments KNEW that the 3rd world countries could never repay these debts so that the only people being on the hook for the borrowing the money were the taxpaying citizens of their own 1st world countries.
If this is too convoluted and arcane for any of you to follow:
OUR governments enslaved US by borrowing money, AT INTEREST, to “lend” to failed nations run by Oligarchs which OUR governments knew would NEVER paid back and Bono is part of the PR effort to make this seem to be a reasonable compassionate thing for our governments to do TO US.
In closing, life in Africa, South America and all these 3rd world shitholes(China is a 3rd world shithole) is MUCH WORSE now than it was when I was a child 50 years ago and it isn’t because of debt.
    Last but not least:
Bono, who still pretends to be an Irishman for the sake of the U2 brand, is using the Nederlands as a tax dodge so that he and his cronies can pay LESS TAXES while acting as a PR shill to take the heat off of governments who gave our taxmoney away to 3rd world Oligarchs.
-each time “lend/lent” is in quotes means our governments knew damned well they were giving away our taxes and increasing our national debt to the PRIME lenders, not lending our tax money at all-

  22. Loans to 3rd world countries should be illegal. Due to corruption and mismanagement these loans end up robbing and enslaving the common people.
