Mr. Dion approved six export permits on Friday covering more than 70 per cent of the transaction, newly released documents show – a decision that represents the most vital step in the Canadian government’s arms-control process. The Liberals have long said they could not interfere with what they described as a “done deal” arranged by the Harper Conservatives.
[…]
The remarkable department of Global Affairs Canada memo, stamped “secret” and obtained by University of Montreal law professor Daniel Turp, who is challenging the Saudi deal in Federal Court, lays bare the Liberal government’s rationale for the mammoth Canadian arms sale.
Canada’s arms export control regime makes it clear that a transaction can only proceed after Ottawa has issued export permits, and the new Global Affairs memo reveals that the Conservatives had only approved minor permits related to the Saudi deal for the export of technical data.
It has fallen to Mr. Dion to approve the vast majority of the transaction and that is what he did last week.

Our country is seriously screwed when some dickhead law prof can challenge government export decisions. Armchair experts usually have no regard for the reality of any situation. That said, funny how the Liberals can change all of the policies it feels like without concern, and then suddenly decide that they can’t challenge the Conservative’s deal with the Saudis… hypocrites. Will the media point that out? Probably not.
Go figure. Classic “Lieberals” first they stole all NDP’s talking points in election, then turn around and adopt and approve all previous conservative governments policies.
Barring the many political, hypocritical and contradictory points of the sale,I hope
the “Jeeps” will be electric powered.
So karma in action?
The useful idiots that liberals spent decades encouraging this kind of advocacy worked to their advantage when they wanted “dirt” on their opponents.
But once the liberals got back in power they discover you can’t shut off that empoeerment.
Sucks to be them.
From the article … ‘It(Dion’s office) noted that current Canada-Saudi relations have led to 16,000 Saudi students studying here “which will help to promote a greater appreciation of Canadian values, including the importance of diversity and gender equality.”’ Boy that’s a lot of wahabi sunni ways.
I support the decision but notice that, as usual, the Liberals ran to the left and rule from the right.
I expect similar behavior on pipelines; lots of Kabuki about banning them and encouraging them go ahead. The Liberal cabinet must be interesting with realists pointing out the economic benefits and Butts & Co demanding halts. They will probably get a payoff with more green infrastructure, which will please their pals.
I don’t think Wonder Boy has anything to do with this. Best send him overseas again,
We are not in good hands with the Liberal Cabal fronted by Shiny Pony. The fact we have leaderless Opposition parties has us in a very precarious political quagmire. It’s also more and more apparent the Liberal Party of Canada were not prepared to govern.
Canada has always been a big arms supplier. that many are ignorant of this fact just shows me why we have a liberal government.
Actually, I would feel better if they were not upending so many previous Conservative policies. It’s like they can’t think of anything else to do.
Frankly, I consider getting the pipelines and West Coast tankers operating to be absolutely vital to our national interest.
So I’d cheerfully hold my nose and avert my eyes if this government played a smiley-faced flim-flam game with the environmentalists while quietly proceeding with the implementation of these projects.
No kidding, it has been amazing to watch the Libs work with the media to erase or discount all of Harper’s governments’ achievements.
As per Dion’s final approval….. let’s see if I can figure any moral consistencies to their major policies……
Canadian fossil fuels = dirty profits for evil westerners, stop at all costs
Canadian war machines for Islam = good profits for an Ontario industry, approve.
…. Nope.
If the liberals cancel this project at this stage, it will incur greater penalties than Chretien’s cancellation of the first maritime helicopter program, even with inflation considered.
We either sell our products, and provide employment, or puff about peace, and add to the unemplyment line.
As for LIEBERALS, well they’re a cancer we have to live with for now….
This is what happens when visionless morons elect visionless morons. As far as any “plan” to govern, well it was, “sell the cheesey smile there dopey and the dopier will vote for you”. Thanks Ontario liberals, enjoy your 300 billion dollar debt, you people have worked for it.
Any effort to point out policy contradictions and hypocrisy to Liberal supporters is wasted effort – the only thing that matters to them is hemp, hair, and heir apparent. And I’m not convinced that the train of thought for NDP, Green, and Conservative supporters goes much deeper.
“Canada has always been a big arms supplier.”
………..and nuclear power for any Third World sh*thole we can name. The only people Liberal Canadians want to see disarmed are law abiding Canadians and Jeeeeews of course.
Outside of disarming Canadians and arming dictators, the Liberal Progressives don’t want to ruin any relationships with Saudi Arabian oil to supply Eastern Canada. A move that would force Liberals to give Western Prairie provinces pipeline jobs.
The last thing Liberals want to see is a Western Canadian driving a new 4×4, when all they had to do was buy a Saudi General a new Hummer to drive over unveiled women they may catch in the desert.
Partially correct, as the Liberals did reverse a number of domestic government policies and are in the process of reversing a number of criminal laws. Also, expect them to bring back the firearms registration and other more restrictive firearms laws. They are even musing about bringing back the Wheat board.
Dwayne and Robert of Ottawa, exactly. It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall at cabinet meetings and listen to some members wanting to shut down all resource development and some wanting development (with a Liberal spin).
The vast majority of the media has sold itself to the Liberal Party long ago and is a part of the machine.
Knight 99, well said. The Laurentian Elite need to keep western Canada down and will work against any rebirth of a western political power base.
Funny, a Lieberal government “can’t reverse” a previously done deal to sell arms to the Saudis, but a former Lieberal government did renege on a previously done deal to buy badly-needed helicopters for Canada’s own armed forces. Strange, that.
JT and the Liberals want to diversify the Canadian economy, so this makes perfect sense – military sales to the Saudis. Just don’t look too close at the human rights record or the financing of jihadi terrorists. Why develop Canadian oil/gas and be energy independent, when you have friends in the Kingdom of Saud.
I find the approval coinciding with Potus’ vist to Saudia Arabia within a week an interesting coincidence.
Notice how the Liberal Mail only “reports” on the issue.
Whenever the Conservatives passed a bill there was always an editorializing of the issue in addition to the reporting.
It usually included the gnashing of teeth and PM Harper is a mean man.
Any sane, uncorrupt Government relying in great part to it’s energy sector exports for revenue, would never deal with Saudi Arabia, especially in armament. We know the Saudis along with the Iranians are the champion financiers of terrorism and the former also spends millions on the Global Warming/Climate Change propaganda that stalls and destroys our chances of exploiting our own resources so they can control the market for their advantage…
…But what am I talking about, Saudi Arabia is an ally!…A UN ally!
W-A-S-H-I-N-G-T-O-N (Aka Western civilization) C-O-R-R-U-P-T-I-O-N
As for the thread at hand, things are so screwed up in this crazy lefty social media society, that if it takes a dumb ass empty hair like Trudeau for the media and the downtown Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver crowd (The vocal/permitted to speak minority) to accept pipelines and development because it comes from his Government instead of the Conservatives under the evil Harper then so be it…For now, otherwise, the silenced/belittled majority will find their Trump eventually.
Shhhhhh! Canada is asleep right now.
Next, we’ll see major equipment and armaments deals with Russia and China… Nothing like turning a blind eye to repression, wherever it can be found. Besides getting in a tizzy about it might cause the PM’s friends at Bay Street law firms to spill their martinis.
Arming the Saudis is a great idea. If they kill Arabs, it saves us from having to do the job.
Dwayne,
To be absolutely clear Turp is a separatist. Ran for the leadership of the PQ I believe, in addition to being a leftist.
Enjoy your day
We help arm the Saudis, the Saudis arm the terrorists. We bomb terrorists.
Kinda like breaking windows to make work fixing them…
an introduction is in order. here is a typical Canuckistan voter, drawn from the ignorant masses. superstitious, weak minded, conspiracies everywhere. think not? astrology, tarot cards, ouji boards, charms, legions of them utterly convinced Apollo 11 was faked.
remember when front wheel drive showed up? a selling point was the disappearance of te drive shaft hump. wow. neat. more foot room. ummm, not so fast there car dealer, these idjits fled in terror at this change they could not understand. seems the ‘magic’ that made the vehicles move was gone. fear fear fear, ignorant beyond comprehension.
that is the average voter.
Were the arms manufactured in Quebec?
Sunni ways
The LAVs are manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) Canada, in London, ON.
Thank you, Rizwan.
Real life isn’t Macross. You cannot win war with Idol singers.
If the domestic pipelines don’t proceed, one can fall back on Saudi oil, hence the crooked deal with ISIS with a legislature building.
Trudeau’s handlers are covering their bases.
Actually the two policies are quite consistant if you are doing the bidding of the Saudis.
I just saw Dion on tv news saying more or less that if Saudi Arabia does not play nice with their Canadian weapons, he will punish them.
Dion may as well sell marijuana to children and then say on tv that if those children inhale that marijuana, they will get punished.
Liberals are more absurd than any parody any comedian could come up with.
Eight wheeled AFVs do really poorly on frangible soil.(Arabian sandbox)
Afghanistan taught the Russians a lesson that we have yet to learn.
That’s why the new Russian AFVs are tracked, not wheeled.
If the KSA uses these LAVs, they’ll be using them on the streets of their cities against insurgents.
Hope that clears things up.
DION THE PUNISHER versus the SAUDI DESERT DOG coming to a WWE event near you soon.
