20 Replies to “Why Political Rallies (Especially Trump’s) No Longer Matter”

  1. If you seriously believe that rallies are not relevant anymore then you are off your rocker.
Humans are social beings. Rallies and other large gatherings are the peak of such engagements. The send messages and can have tremendous impact – up and beyond toppling governments. That hasn’t and won’t change. Social media and other technology simply make it easier to facilitate.

  2. Well, I too think the Captain is way off on this one. If you want to create any excitement for your campaign from either media or internet exposure, you better have lots of video of inspiring speeches with throngs of excited voters cheering you on.
But then, I suspect his motive in writing this was more to entertain than truly claim campaign rallies are now pointless.

  3. A guy who makes the entirety of his living shuffling bits about on the internet thinks the real world is a waste of time.
    Hoodathunkit?

  4. I have to say about political rallies that there is nothing better than sealing a deal like “pressing the flesh”. Granted most don’t get that opportunity but a rally for most is as close as it gets. People wait in line for 17-18 hours to get front row seats. Amazing.

  5. Yes, my outside the box thinking surely isn’t necessary as the right in both Canada and the US has come to dominate each country’s respective governments.

  6. Leftards dominate the internet [and twit-err], while the people who support Trump listen to AM radio and go to rallies.

  7. Rallies may have even become a liability. Trump gets 35000 people to a rally with standing room only and what does the media show over and over? A handful of thugs that rushed the stage is the only story.

  8. Nothing frames words, events like the backdrop of a face to face meeting. You look in their eyes, check the real or posed confidence. Their intellect or lack of.
    Take our own “shiny pony”.
Having met him at our Legion, while he campaigned in a byelection, a clearer picture, of a soon to be PM emerged. That bouncy puppy, fratboy impression is firmly reinforced with his every utterance, on our airways.
“In over his head” doesn’t even come close to describing the lad…..

  9. Captain, I think you miss an aspect of human nature.
We be herd beasts, one of the greatest joys of the mob, is being whipped to a righteous frenzy and then going plains ape on the unbeings.
The duality of our nature is something our progressive friends deny.
They have obviously never cornered a frightened man.
    Or been that cornered rat.
    Building is hard,laborious, bloody tedious.
    Destruction is so easy.
    And so much fun.
Hence we have to learn to avoid taking that easy path.
For Hell is the place that path creates.
Look back to recent history, the real creative and effective destroyers have all been builders.

  10. What kind of argument is that?
The right isn’t dominant because it continues to have public rallies. If anything it would be the opposite – Obama had spectacular events in his first run for potus.

  11. Trump is the undisputed king of Twitter. People don’t read Twitter. The media do and they channel it if it is effective.
One of the big stories of this cycle is that the GOP candidates – some at least – are using the new tech better than the Dems. And that hasn’t been the case since gwbs first campaign (perhaps his second).

  12. Lefties don’t dominate the internet. Far from it. If they did, they wouldn’t keep trying to pass “net neutrality” laws.
This blog right here has a daily visit count bigger than the circulation of any newspaper in the country. Is there a blog in the world more widely read than Instapundit? How much do you think the Left hates Matt Drudge?

  13. Gord Tulk is right – humans are social creatures. And they do enjoy “experiences”. Why do whale watching, go to an aquarium, go to a zoo, go to Africa, travel, have sex, etc when you can get it all on the internet?

  14. “People don’t read Twitter.”
People interested in politics read Twitter. Selectively. IMO, Facebook is for families and friends to keep in touch, Twitter is useful to get your message out; ergo, Trump has become The Master, along with Mark Cuban. Instagram is for photos. As someone who attended a lot of politically-oriented rallies in the past, I can say that rallies are valuable for face-to-face brainstorming and networking and to get a read on politicians.

  15. Relax Cpt. The only way you lose is if you dig in.
People don’t “do lunch”, meet at doughnut shops, go to bars, etc. so they can surf the internet.

  16. At a Conservative rally a couple of elections back my wife and I had our photo taken with PM Harper. I took great pleasure in including that in our Christmas letter, especially to lefty friends. I couldn’t have done that without a rally and the satisfaction of listening for lefty heads exploding was most gratifying.

  17. Trump is the undisputed king of Twitter. People don’t read Twitter. The media do and they channel it if it is effective.
… the GOP candidates – some at least – are using the new tech better than the Dems.

    That is good to know.

  18. I await to see if these rallies have any impact:

  19. And the American Media continue copying the Canadian (Eastern ?) Media. Possibly this is just an Example of Guernica, Spain where the Nazi Regime used the Spanish Civil War as the testing ground for the Air-Power Blieztkreig World War Two Invasion.
Naw! this wouldn’t work the Americans are not that stupid to think the Eastern Canadian Populace could ever move beyond being Sheeple. Mind you we are talking about the American Smearedia.
