14. CP and the CBC are busy twisting facts about the Harper government’s refugee policy. They assert that using criteria that identify ethnic or religious minorities in Syria and Iraq runs counter to UN policy. If so, that’s news to anyone who actually reads the UN refugee definition: “The 1951 Refugee Convention spells out that a refugee is someone who “owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality, and is unable to, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.”” It’s kind of hard to read into that members of the dominant religious group in a country engaging in a civil war. Yet Trudeau (and the media) have no trouble reading in a preference for members of the LGBTQ community and adopting a policy whereby less than 1% of those admitted are Christian or any ethnic minority in countries where ISIS has made a point of massacring members of those groups. Sad that political correctness on the part of the new government gets in the way of law, common sense and what is right.
