I watched him get beat at Saratoga, there was another horse who ran a different race there, Private Zone, I believe, ran 3/5 of a second off the track record that day, who will also be in the Breeder’s Cup.

American Pharoa never should have gotten beat there though. It was a hot day, they should have given him longer to acclimate and rest instead of shipping him in right before the race. It’s been said that you can find the bottom of any horse if you try hard enough.

They made it a lot easier for him. They chose to enter the freakishly fast Liam’s Map in the mile instead of the Classic and the brilliant filly Beholder is scratched. Either one of those would have given Pharoah all that he could handle.

Meanwhile, once again, Ontario has found a way to screw the rest of the country. All wagering in Canada goes through Woodbine.

Woodbine announced Oct. 29 it will raise the pari-mutuel takeout rates on many Breeders’ Cup wagers because of a new standardized revenue model, action that sparked a rebuke from the Horseplayers Association of North America.

I like the horse, but not necessarily his name. It is a fairly obvious reference to Obama.

Horses, just like homo sapiens, have their good and not so good days. At that level of competition and training, anything, no matter how small, can make a big difference. Having had the incredible good fortune of being able to work with horses on a daily basis has left me in awe of their willingness and courage. Regardless of any outcome, American Pharoah is an incredible athlete and should be honored as such. Happy Samhain!
