    “The mental disorder” was underway long before this election -it started when the Alberta-born reds in the PC party tried to gang up on Ralph, it metastasized under Stelmac and became full blown pathocracy under Red Alley – you now have just made it official by voting for the proper branding of the politics which have been running the province since Ralf left. I have to wonder if what’s left of the red PC party will join the NDP.
    I’m so glad Ralph didn’t live to see this.

  13. Firstly, a lot conservatives as well as liberal twits moved west over the past 30 years to escape the insanity of the liberal east. So don’t blame it on all of us. I ran a business in Alberta for 14 years until I couldn’t take the weather any more and moved it to BC.
    Further, Alberta didn’t do a very good job of assimilating all those new-comers into the conservative western way of life. You were too anxious to get bodies on the job during the oil-rush good times.
    Here’s the reality. Your own Wild Rose Party sold you out before the election and that put the nail in coffin. There was now only one choice to get the uber corrupt PROGRESSIVE conservatives out.
    So now you are stuck with a government that hates everything Alberta stands for and will be backed by the new West-hating federal government Led by the imp, Justin Trudope..
    You got yourself into this mess and you can damned well enjoy it for the next four, or I’ll bet five years …. you sold out your fellow conservatives in BC and Sask. in the process. We all will pay the price with you as we are all of the West. If we were smart we could get out of this demented dominion a M. Steyn calls it, but that will have to wait for about 4 or 5 years to consider, they who knows what the world will be doing … it is all getting very weird.
    The next four years will be a bane on Canada’s existence. I fear for our future.

  14. The Muslims in work with almost exclusively voted NDP, wanting a “change”. Now they are whining that they may not be working in the spring because the developers here in Calgary are pretty quiet about their plans for the future.

    Yup. TCPL laid off 900 in the last month or so. The company I contract for laid off 200-300 since January. A lot of companies are going into receivership right now.
    The smaller companies can’t pay their service bills for field operations and don’t have the operating capital to continue.
    The Alberta government is going to see some major revenue shortfalls.

    I simply don’t believe the $ 6.1 billion deficit. I thought it would have come in around $8 – 10 billion. Is someone fibbing to us? Prentice had a deficit almost that big and things have went to hell a lot since last winter.
    I’m afraid it will be at least 5 years until the next election because the Marxists will be so low in the polls towards the end of their term.

  24. This didn’t have to happen. Prentice was a progressive small ‘c’ conservative that hated the much more conservative Wildrose party. I think he also feared vote splitting among conservative voters so once he effectively mugged the Wildrose with bs promises of a merged conservative movement Prentice swooped in for a quick election kill. Of course he wasn’t seeing things the way Wildrose supporters did – that his cold calculated brash move was an act of meant to force conservative voters to support the Progressive Conservatives since they “clearly” were the only viable party. Meanwhile liberal voters somehow decided to consolidate their support with just one party, the NDP and not vote split (which is something I don’t think is clearly understood here in Alberta – it’s almost like it was a planned ambush). If Prentice would have taken the year he had before an election HAD TO BE CALLED and worked out an honest valid merge with the Wildrose – out in the open like Harper and MacKay did with the Reform and Federal PC’s – the support would have been there. But it didn’t happen. Prentice wanted it all and had to protect the interests of the establishment. And for that self serving act of elitist narcissism we’re all going to pay – care of another self serving elitist narcissist and her party.

    Many (know this is a wide concept) think this can’t happen here, nonetheless, look at Venezuela.
    While nothing great before socialist, they are running the country that should be wealthy, to the ground. Rather then improving the lives of the population, they are making everybody equally poor. Those in power though, live well and better, not unlike those that used to be wealthy that they made poor.
    That is the socialist way. Wealth is wholly politically incorrect word something to be shunned.
    What is interesting is, that those that voted for them suddenly shut up.
    If you read letters to the editor in Calgary Herald you will find many that are severely critical of the socialists though you still find socialist apologists. One of them is former apparatchik at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. They guy hates Klein even more today than the day he did not get his way.
    As is the way of things, we will have to endure much worse times before there is any significant opposition to the current socialist regime.
    You have to remember that majority of those that voted for the socialists, apart from those that were purely fed up with the Progressive………, live off the taxes and/or came from the third world and can’t believe themselves that they can get free stuff if they vote for it.

    BC and Saskatchewan cannot bail out the ROC, I expect both provinces will embark on massive infrastructure schemes to become have nots asap.
    Otherwise western separation will become a real force.

    The arrogance and ignorance of the starving stealing Liberals will prime the antagonism and the NPD will rub salt into the wounds.

    Equalization uses a mathematical formula to determine which provinces are eligible for the transfer and the amount of each eligible province’s payment. Since 2009, the total amount of Equalization payments has grown annually in accordance with a three year moving average rate of growth in Canada’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP); between 2007 and 2009, the total amount was based on a formula.
    The basic structure of Equalization is relatively straightforward. On a per capita basis, Equalization assesses a province’s ability to generate own-source revenues and compares that fiscal capacity to the average fiscal capacity for all provinces. With the exception of user fees (fees for the use of public services), all provincial government revenue sources are allocated to one of five categories: personal income taxes, business income taxes, consumption taxes, property taxes and natural resource revenues.
    Save for natural resource revenues, the Equalization formula estimates fiscal capacity in each of the four remaining revenue categories by determining the amount of per capita revenue that each province could generate if all provinces had identical tax rates. Because of the wide range of natural resources and royalty structures across the provinces, actual resource revenues are used to measure fiscal capacity instead of creating a national average tax rate.
    To determine which provinces are eligible for Equalization – and, if so, for how much – each province’s per capita fiscal capacity in all five revenue categories is compared to the average fiscal capacity of the 10 provinces. If, according to the formula, a province has a below-average ability to generate own-source revenues, then it is eligible for an Equalization payment to make up the difference. If a province’s revenue-generating ability exceeds the 10-province average, then it is not eligible for an Equalization payment.

    I have to agree that on first glance it appears to be an unimaginable arrangement. But consider the well-documented connection between US based WWF, Tides, Rockefeller, Steyer etc., funding the enviro-movement here. Aside from the desire to punish Prentice’s tories, there might be a plausible expectation for funding the NDP as well, for the purpose of installing the right people for derailing the energy industry. Quite in sync with the motives of the enviros, and really, the same bunch.

  37. The Alberta recession is at this point mostly a result of the price of Oil and Gas and little to do with their NDP government. That, however will have much more effect from now on. Notley must have had fiscal incontinence envy of the PCs though, as she now has decided to double down on their “stellar” performance.
    Alberta is no different than BC when, after losing their “last conservative” Premier in Bill Bennett, the Socreds went steadily downhill with (former Liberal and consistent wacko) Vanderzalm, “Flip” Wilson re-started the Liberals and split the vote with the dying Socreds giving the NDP their second wave. The Liberals then consolidated (Flip and Judy got it on in private) under Gordon Campbell, the popular Vancouver Mayor with everyone to the right of the NDP.
    Politically speaking, you have the homogeneous Left and then a full spectrum of others ranging from libertarians to Red Tories, fiscal conservatives to social conservatives, and, populists all over the board. Maximizing the votes of that non-NDP salad is the key.
    Alberta needs to do something similar unless it likes looking like Ontario. It has little to do with “conservative principles” (and even less to do with my libertarian idealism) and everything to do with keeping the NDP out of power. If that doesn’t appeal to Albertans, just give it a couple of NDP terms to change their thinking.

    I suspect the 4 year reaction will be similar to other parts of the country.
    Look what happened in Ontario. 1995 saw Mike Harris sweep to power in a massive backlash against Bob Rae. The NDP never got re-elected and it has taken about 20 years for the province to drift slowly back to the left of the spectrum. (ie. 8 years of PCs that got less right-wing with time. Replaced in 2003 with reasonable Liberals for another 8 years and now have Wynne…no comment)
    Nova Scotia? Elected NDP in 2009 with a majority. Back to third party status in 2013.
    British Columbia? No NDP since 2001. It’ll probably happen again and people will quickly remember the lesson.
    Saskatchewan? Brad Wall is on his way to an easy third term.
    Manitoba? Although they’re entrenched in that province…when they lose…and they will next time most likely…it’ll be a long time in the wilderness.
    Alberta will taste the candy and remember for a lot longer I’m sure.

    I suppose that the good news here is that most of those initial pink slips are going to be going out to the eastern hoseheads that voted for this idiocy so there is some element of …. dare I say it?…”social justice” to this unfortunate episode? Maybe once they’ve got their pink slips and final pay they’ll go back home where they belong.

  43. To be honest I saw the end of conservatism in Alberta with the election of Lougheed. There was a spark of conservative resurgence under Klein but it was short lived and Alberta has been on the fast track to ruin ever since. Unfortunately Alberta has imported 1.5 million people since Klein led us into prosperity most of whom hold a ‘progressive’ mindset. Of course also in that time fewer and fewer voters have a living memory of the disaster that was the ‘progressive’ wet dream AKA the NEP. The problem as I see it is that we are in a cultural (dare I say spiritual) battle where the vast majority fight on the ‘progressive’ side because they have been told that being ‘progressive’ is the intelligent thing to do.

  45. I can tell you this i personally know of 3 PC voters (lefties in disguise) who voted for the ndp to protect their gov job and get a pay raise.
    Alberta is not conservative anymore and it wont ever be again. i am a hard right conservatarian i am a member of the WRP. The wild rose has one shot and that’s 2019.

    The supposed conservatives that live in Alberta have gotten weak and complacent as they became friendly with the government They have forgotten what conservatism is.
    We deserve this. When my friend who is a boomer said he voted ndp because the wild rose was corrupt and inexperienced …..i was in awww. Yet he said he was a conservative supporter and voted for Harper . I mean how stupid and messed up is that?
    These are the people that put ndp in power. and Justin in power. So corrupt they cant even see it. He voted ndp to keep his job (in gov agri services) and give himself a raise the rest of Alberta be damned…..unbelievable

    Just to be clear, the Province of Alberta doesn’t actually make any “equalization transfers” to other provinces at all.
    For Federal tax purposes, there are neither Albertans nor New Brunswickers, only individual and corporate Canadian taxpayers. Equalization payments are drawn from the total Federal tax revenues collected across Canada.
    So, you are right but in a roundabout way: the less money individual and corporate Canadian taxpayers located in Alberta make, the less Federal taxes from them the Government of Canada will receive.
