Scott Gilmore of Maclean’s magazine — pristine, un-thumbed copies of which can be found in dentist’s offices everywhere — argues that the only reason conservatives oppose unadulterated progressive twaddle is because we’re all scaredy-cats:
…conservatives are scared of everyone and everything. A skinny brown kid brings a homemade clock to a Texas school. A woman wears a niqab to her Canadian citizenship ceremony. An Alberta mother tries to treat her child’s severe epilepsy with medical marijuana. Everywhere they look, the political right is frightened. While they once imagined themselves as the barrel-chested man’s man, they’ve now become the clichéd housewife standing on a chair, shrieking at a mouse.
If conservatives were actually frightened by unthinking, milquetoast, consensus-driven “everybody knows” GTA-centric points of view then Maclean’s magazine would scare us shitless.

That level of stupid can’t be reasoned with.
Sure Scott whilst we are legalizing marijuana, lets legalize fentanyl at the same time. That seems to be the direction that you/we are headed. Let’s spare the expense of the travel and get ‘er done.
Can you handle it?
The perpetualy offended act as though every mite of dust, every thing shocks and horrifies them and we are the bedwetters.
First of all the policies and politics of the governing Conservatives are not far right.
more center really IMO.
That Obama is watching the middle east burn and millions of phony refugees heading for Europe without blinking, yet some fake clock maker is offended he wets his pants.
He calls up the kid and invites him to the White House.
Scared?
Hardly the people are waking up and they are tired of being lied to, tired of their concerns being ignored.
Trump is doing well because folks are tired of the PC crap.
As for the lady who wants to cover her face, well over 82% of Canadians outside Quebec agree with the PM.
In Quebec it is over 90%.
The beard and the weird picked a bad hill to die on this woman is disrespectful and she does not have to uncover her face.
She can go back to whatever paradise she came from and no loss to us.
The Media are all giddy drinking juniors bathwater, if they ever ran into an ordinary hard working Canadian they would be very afraid.JMO
We are as Kate pointed out saying you do not speak for me.
… From the people who put the headline “how scary?” above a picture of Stockwell Day’s head simply because he is a Christian …
Who cries like a girl at the mere thought of holding a firearm?
Never heard of the guy, actually. I guess the reference to the English-speaking world in his tweet is intended, in his alternative universe, as a sort-of drive-by ethno-specific smear having to do with “white privilege” or something. Beyond that, I guess the beard is supposed to be an expression of his “prog” “manliness” or whatever.
Whiners like Mr. Gilmore and his ideological co-religionists are like my pet Rottweiler or any three-year-old child I’ve ever met: “I want”. Whatever happens to wander into their brains is the burning fascination of the moment, and they exhibit nary the slightest awareness of, let alone even the barest interest in or regard for any dimension of the matter beyond their compulsive demand to have it.
As we all know, people of a conservative disposition have a bit more of a well-rounded response to life’s circumstances and decision-points, particularly with respect to understanding risk, the potential for loss and danger, and the likelihood of unintended consequences.
Mr. Gilmore wouldn’t understand this at all, of course, but the reason people like me look askance at all of the progs’ “I want”-s and “I demand”-s is because their track record on risk, loss, danger and unintended consequences is very long and very undistinguished. Embarrassing, shameful and deadly, actually, not that they would have enough self-awareness to notice or have enough self-respect to care.
At the end of the day, our concerns are not really about us, they’re really about them. Experience has taught us more about that than we ever needed to know; what is it that they say about experience, again? Something like, “it’s what you end up with when you’ve suffered failure”, or words to that effect.
Ahhh Scott.
Proving once again the amount of stupid you can pack into a liberal journalist is infinite.
Put out word in some of the radical mosques the address of Maclean’s office and include a rumor that they might be thinking of printing the Muhamed cartoons, then we’ll see who the scaredy-cats are.
Go easy on Scott, he’s new at urnalism.
He was promoted from cleaning washroom.
In a way Scott is correct. The Conservatives are scared. They are scared to say ” NO, and if you don’t like it screw off.”
Scott Gilmore should be f*cking ashamed of himself for writing an item that has all the depth and substance of a schoolyard taunt.
Shame on Macleans for endorsing such bigoted and hateful opinion.
” But crime rates in Canada have been declining for decades.”
uhhh . . . . . so . . . . . . letting in a torrent of unwashed unfiltered masses from godforsakeninstan . . . . (it isn’t just the present Syria the only potential source of a huge influx) is, ummm, gonna be just da t’ing to reverse the trend? wtf is the OBJECTIVE in letting in the hordes? tell me. summbuddy. here’s a hint: today’s skill testing question, which of these 2 events came first:
– boat people hitting Canada’s shores
– vietnamese gangs hitting the streets of T.O.
see where I’m going with this?
Ya know, if a conservative, or a Tory (of any nation) would’ve used that “housewife” illustration, there would be outraged angry SJW’s taking to the streets. Or at least to Twitter. But we all know that the rules for liberals / Liberals are different.
McClean’s. …didn’t know they were still making that toothpaste. Haven’t heard of it in years. And this guy writes for them? What…ads or something like that?
They have to make up nonsense about conservatives, because if they told the truth they’d have to admit that the conservatives are right.
I yearn for the day when Macleans goes completely offline. There is too much dogma-driven fact abuse and truth pollution out there.
That was awful. I cannot believe that MacLeans (a once respected magazine) would publish something so sophomoric. Among other things, the article trivializes some important current concerns of many Canadians.
” But crime rates in Canada have been declining for decades.” Leftists are forever repeating their own misguided talking points. What they miss on the “crime is going down” issue is that gang crimes and drug crimes are NOT going down, and that is exactly where the Harper legislation with things like mandatory minimums is targeted.
That’s another one often heard “Mandatory minimums don’t work” — absolute nonsense. The stats on this are always from the US, where the mandatory minimums are mostly insane, vs. the rather tepid MM’s implemented by the Conservatives. No comparison. If nothing else, the MM’s work to keep trouble makers out of difficult neighborhoods for at least a short time — vs. their heading back to the hood in the next cab once they have been let off.
I just think leftists do not think about some of these issues very deeply. Nor do they bother to research carefully — I guess it is enough that they keep parroting one another, so they must be right.
Macleans? Weren’t they brothers? Or something?
Every journalist in Canada should be required to live in one of these shitholes riven by ethnic differences and hatreds for at least five years before they are allowed to write anything.
The problem with almost all liberal Canadians is they simply have no idea of how societies can degenerate. I know. I come from one of these third world crapholes and everyday I am grateful for Canada.
These naive and sanctimonious ramblings of the super libs make me want to spit nails. A pox on Gilmore. A pox on Macleans.
Thanks to Mr. Gilmore and his like, Mr. Gilmore is obsolete. In the New Canada, there will be no one with the name “Gilmore.”
it’s hardly a question of fear; it’s a question of profound irritation. Life’s tough and it’s even tougher if you’re stupid. Conservatives simply don’t believe in deliberately making things worse for the country by bringing in dysfunctional elements on top of the ones we already have.
Gilmore is a typical lib/lefty. Since he is governed entirely by his limbic system, he assumes that everyone else must be as well. He simply cannot fathom that someone may object to something without fearing it or may disagree with someone without hating them. The article is pure projection.
You have to cut Scott a little slack – his wife, Catherine McKenna, is a liberal candidate in Ottawa Centre. If she loses maybe he’ll try to be a little less biased in his scribbling. Ya think? Nah, me neither.
Hey Scotty, I think everyone should have unregistered guns and be able to walk around with them loaded it they want to.
I think most Canadians are mature enough for it.
What, too scared to consider it Scott?
They don’t understand that we hate them as much as they hate us do they. And by is I mean the roc.
The simple fact is that conservatives are better at recognizing danger and consequences than lefties. What the lefties perceive as fear is actually just a talent that they themselves don’t possess. But the real problem with lefties is that they are unable to envision the consequences of their own policies. It’s really that simple.
the trouble with liberals is that their all mouth and no mind shooting off their pieholes before their brains kick in
Metrosexuals unite, vote progressive. Once we get the lumbersexuals on board we can win, we can win.
Wait a minute some of the lumbersexuals play hockey. Oh shit.
So Scotty nobody’s afraid of progressives, especially of weanies like you along with your ludicrous, and bigoted btw, attitude.
excellent and well-reasoned response! Well done.
I’ve worked with individuals like this guy.
Spouts the same HDS verbage as the cause for all the worlds ills.
Then he got sent to one of our out of country contracts. All I heard about for days was the conditions and he said something completely out of character for a die hard liberal.
That “when those people come here they should kiss the ground”….and I noticed a less critical tone wrt PMSH.
A previous poster has made a similar observation that the writer is looking at the world and telling his readers what he wants to see. Heard this talking point before when the lefties tried to accuse PMSH of hiding in a closet. But the critics go mute when I ask how many of the dipper caucus went into the hall to bravely confront the Parliament Hill shooter.
I’m betting the writer has yet to leave the confines of the MTV and truly experience what life is like beyond a 2 minute walk to the subway terminal.
Metrosexuals, they write the silliest things.
I wonder if Scott wears a seatbelt when he drives his car. Is he afraid of crashing or is this a reasonable limitation he chooses on his freedom against a small risk of devestating consequence? Even if fear is the driving factor, that does not make it unreasonable. Not all fear can be classified as phobia.
David, well said.
Thanks to all of the above who have stated so eloquently what you think of this unjournalist.
Anne in swON, this explains a lot about his drivel.
Vuil, welcome here.
It was filth like his diatribe the convinced me a number years ago to drop McLean’s.
It wasn’t a homemade clock.
Exercising moral judgement is how one maintains rationality. Conservatives tend to be more judgmental than progressives who tend to be lost in the fog of moral equivalence. This pundit is conflating conservative rationality with fear. It’s a progressive tactic for squelching critical thinking.
“It wasn’t a homemade clock.”
It looked like a briefcase with a timing device. What do they call those? A bomb?
Yup, and what comes out of their brains is sanctimonious proselytizing in the form of consistently fictitious or mindfully incomplete narratives constructed for their utility in priming the prog’s sense of smugness.
For example —
Pure propaganda. As RTW notes, Ahmed Mohamed didn’t build the clock. He removed the plastic casing from an old digital alarm clock, put the guts — the wires and circuit boards and so on — into a pencil case that looks like a miniature briefcase, closed the briefcase with a cable “because I didn’t want to unlock it to make it seem like a threat” (!) and carried it around with him all day.
There are only two possible explanations for Gilmore’s mindfully maudlin falsehood “A skinny brown kid brings a homemade clock to a Texas school”: Either he’s is unaware, more than a week after the details were widely reported, that “the skinny brown kid” didn’t build the clock, or he IS aware of it but is opting for dishonesty in order to smear conservatives.
Pick one.
Wow, that’s a really good deal: Scott Gilmore will give you $10 if you cancel your subscription.
That’s just too good to pass up. If you subscribe, and were thinking about cancelling, now’s the time to do it!

“But crime rates in Canada have been declining for decades.”
yup… less shoplifting, less car theft… but violence is skyrocketing…
“The number of shootings in Toronto has spiked compared to last year, and is up 77% from 2014. The stats were released by Toronto Police and show there have been 286 victims of gun violence in this city as of September 21st.”
“That’s a rise from the 162 people shot during the same time period last year.”
must be all those guys from upper canada college.

What an incredibly dishonest piece of shite!
