As of today, the Aboriginal Affairs website shows that 197 First Nations, or roughly 33 per cent, of the bands required to file had not yet complied. That is significantly higher than the number that missed the deadline last year, when 98 per cent of bands complied with the new law.
Just hanging back and hedging their bets and hoping that if they all vote for Tommy the Chameleon and he gets to be PM, he’ll get rid of that nasty old piece of legislation that requires them to be accountable.
No big deal. Just suspend federal payments to the tribes until they comply.
My thought exactly.
Maybe there should be an inquiry into missing and misused aboriginal money ?
Perhaps the audit requirement for First Nations groups would be submerged for 17 years if the NDP had its way. Stories like this one from the Toronto Sun in 2013 (http://www.torontosun.com/2013/05/20/ndp-at-a-loss-to-explain-mulcairs-contradictions-silence-about-bribe-attempt) suggest a remarkable ability to keep things quiet that might otherwise raise uncomfortable questions:
In November 2010, Mulcair told reporters there had never been an attempt to bribe him.
Months later, he said he had met with police to discuss an uncomfortable meeting with the former mayor of Laval, Que., Gilles Vaillancourt, who is facing a host of corruption charges.
Montreal’s La Presse newspaper reported that Mulcair told police he suspected there was money inside an envelope that appeared during the meeting, but he didn’t accept the envelope and cut the meeting short.
Asked about the discrepancy, Angus tried to bring the issue back to what Prime Minister Stephen Harper knew about the payment made to Duffy.
“If you knew something was wrong, you should’ve walked away from it,” Angus said. “If you see that laws were broken in your office, then why have you not called police to deal with it?”
Angus didn’t offer any reasons why Mulcair waited 17 years to speak to police if there was some suspicion about a failed attempt to bribe him in 1994.
Funding for non-essential services may be withdrawn?
Why is the government funding ANY non-essential services?
time to cut these natives bands off the teat, enough is enough
Yeah, neither Justin nor Mulcair will follow up on this.
Reading this story at NN,I was amused by the number of people who excused the FN Chiefs saying perhaps they didn’t have the time to finish up their accounting, making it sound like this was a big complicated deal.
These are mostly Rez’s with less than a thousand members, not multi-national conglomerates, and it doesn’t take Deloitte Touche to figure out the Band books, just a competent bookkeeper who’s taken a night school course.
They are simply trying to out wait the election, because they have something to hide.

This is just a NDP plan to get all Indians to Vote. I don’t think they have anything to hide except a UN agenda…
Voting is an individual “citizen” right under “Canadian” Sovereignty..don’t you know…Counting
Obama makes it so illegal aliens(Future Demacratic Voterzz)Dont have to swar loyatly to america more reasons Obama not only needs to be Impeached by deported from america him and his entire family and Cabenet as well
Guys non of these people have vote for Harper ever.ever. That’s not going to change. So allthese people can hope for is if more Canadians vote ,and vote left.
I would hope that band-members would understand that the reason for transparency is to see what hole their money is being whizzed down. Mind you they seem to take special pride in poor reserves having millionaire chiefs.
@doug young
Such an inspiring story. All over Canada now, beautiful women with huge tits are saying “If she can make it, so can I !”

I’m sure that the vast majority of the rank-and-file natives on reserve would love to have a peek at how the money is being spent and how much chief and council are taking home for their services. Unfortunately no reserve resident in his or her right mind is going to demand this information or display any kind of support for the Financial Transparency Act without incurring the wrath of chief and council. The curious ones would either be bribed into submission or punished for speaking out much along the lines of how a banana republic dictatorship would function.
The best and possibly only course of action for responsible reserve dwellers would be to keep their mouths shut and hope that the government stands firm on the provisions of the act. The reserve hierarchy who probably have much that they would like to remain confidential can only hope that nitwits like Trudeau or Mulcair come to power and return to the status quo of unaccountability and no questions asked funding.
It’s rather telling that chiefs of successful and functional reserves such as Darcy Bear of the Whitecap Dakota First Nation seem to have no problem with accountability.
The Federal election is on and Harper needs support for running the country in a business like manner and is the only leader who is prepared to hold First Nations to account. Earlier this year in a meeting with First Nations Trudeau told the meeting ” he supported their right to blocade roads and railways” and in this story “Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau has said he will rescind this law.”
Anybody following the election will also know that Mulcair in a meeting with First Nations in Kamloops has proven that First Nations have him in their back pocket and have his total support in resisting the Federal government. In fact last weel Mulcair was very critical of Harper for the money spent by the government in court cases with the First Nations – his stance obviously was let them have whatever they want – the gov’t should just roll over and nobody speaks on behalf of the taxpayer.
I suppose in a way one can’t blame natives for supporting vote-hungry idiots such as Trudeau and Mulcair who have promised a good deal of largesse without accountability. Somewhat like the parent who insists on responsible behaviour (get a job, be productive, lay off the drugs and booze, etc.) and the other parent who hands out money on request and turns a blind eye to any and all transgressions just to curry favour with the child. What the natives have to realize is that with the economy in the tank, getting whatever you ask for is simply not sustainable and with Trudeau or Mulcair (or both) in charge, the economy will must certainly go swirling down the bowl. Only PMSH can deliver on economic issues and, with that, everyone, including natives, benefits.
