When I purchased a new laptop last Christmas, I didn’t like Windows 8 so had my grgrson download Windows 7 for me. I’m comfortable with it, but every day a pop-up keeps saying I should update to Windows 10. I know it’s because they’ll stop providing support for Windows 7 sometime soon.
I was going to ask the computer brains on SDA but now have the answer. Thanks.
(87 tomorrow and computer illiterate.)
Windows 7 support will not be ending “some time soon”. It’s already out of mainstream support, which simply means no new features. Security and bugfix patches will continue until it falls completely out of extended support (commercial-grade PCs are still sold with Windows 7), which I expect to be whenever Windows 11 is announced.
As for privacy – you’re surfing the web. You have zero privacy anyway.
So, let’s see if I’ve got this right:
The update to Windows 10 is $FREE.00 and your usage information is sent back to Microsoft homebase. This seems to be the process that both Microsoft and Apple have adopted lately to get new releases of their operating systems out without incurring the cost of testing. I am hanging on to Windows XP and Apple Mavericks as long as possible. When I have to change, I will be attempting to submit an invoice each time my computers want to report a crash or system error to homebase…pay me for testing your junk or test it before you release it. The invoice will not get paid but it might get noticed.
Awesome that you are on-line and getting information from the alternative media. You will also want to visit drudgereport.com and infowars.com.
On to the tech support. All of the updates mentioned in the attached article should be removed. One of them is the annoying Windows 10 update. Do the following to remove an update:
*** Note: The way I describe how to navigate is as follows: “Start Button > Control Panel > Programs and Features” means to left click on the start button (bottom left), then left click the control panel and finally left click on Programs and Features. ***
1. Open ‘Windows Update’
Start Button > Control Panel > Programs and Features
2. Click on ‘View Installed Updates’
3. Find the updates mentioned in linked article
4. Right-Click on the update and choose ‘Uninstall’
5. When the update is uninstalled choose to restart later (until you have uninstalled all of the updates)
You will also want to turn off automatic windows updates so you can choose which updates are installed in the future. See this article for a how-to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-automatic-updating-on-off#turn-automatic-updating-on-off=windows-7
If you don’t want Microsoft spying on you, turn off CEIP (Customer Experience Improvement Program). See this article for a how-to. https://pubs.vmware.com/view-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.view.administration.doc%2FGUID-BE82165B-13BC-4FD9-A9CF-FBEF6343D98A.html
Good luck
I was absorbed a few weeks ago. Seemed pretty smooth and the only lack I’ve found so far is that it no longer recognizes my camera for uploading. If you press a key on the keyboard, anyone in the world who has an interest in you and your keyboard can know. If I was of the raghead persuasion and feeling righteous, I might be concerned. I expect a deluge of ads about younger women hunting for older gentlemen in my area, come and get me cootie!

DOH! Sorry, step one should read:
1. Open ‘Programs and Features’
If you’re hanging on to Windows XP and you’re still connected to the Internet, your machine is almost certainly part of a botnet by now.
This is one of the reasons why I use a derived version of red hat linux, it’s WAY MORE secure than windows or crapple will ever be. It’s free, doesn’t have spyware, malware or other retarded security issues unlike windows or crapple which is comparable to a piece of swiss cheese.
Save yourself the trouble and check it out
Oh and if your going to use Linux just a word of advice. Don’t use anything related to ubuntu it’s not as secure as most people would like to think it is.
It’s days like this I wish the TM Repository was still being updated.
for gellen and others…..
go to Control Panel, then to programs, then to programs and features, then installed updates.
When the search box comes up, enter KB3035583 into the upper right hand search box and hit enter.
When the uninstall update comes up, look for Microsoft windows KB3035583 (windows 10), click to highlight, then click uninstall. When prompted to restart, do so.
This gets rid of those nasty “remainders to update”, and removes any installations they all ready stealth installed.
Works for the Windows 10 crap, but you will have to search for other things they may have stuck in. Remember, all patches come with their own little Trojans.
Thank you. It sounds simple but if I can’t do it, my grgrson can follow your instructions.
Every time Windows downloads updates, my laptop gets slower and I blame it on whatever they’ve downloaded. One time it was so bad, I did a System Restore and it got rid of the problem.
Can I stop all of Windows automatic updates, or should I?
Linux doesn’t have malware, spyware or viruses?

Thanx to all the SDA techies in the above comments for valuable info: me and Bill Gates’ out of control monstrosity better known to me by the non too flattering moniker of microshit have been arm wrestling for awhile now over just what I as the customer wants versus what they are telling me is good for me.

Everyone should immediately go out and wipe their hard drives and install the QNX Neutrino x86 target. No chance they’ll ever get viruses or malware!
Nor of getting anything useful done, either, but hey, small price to pay for being “secure”.
