I think the Fifties are becoming a target for this sort of rot for one reason only: anyone who had a significant role in shaping the events and mores of that decade is now conveniently dead.
GK Chesterton was fond of noting “the small and arrogant oligarchy of those who merely happen to be walking about”. This in contrast to what he called “the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors”.
The good news though is that the actuarial tables are now starting to kick in for the loathsome Sixties peace-and-free-love generation too.
Collectivists need to separate the individual from their families and communities, and most certainly their place of worship, so the perfect citizen can be moulded by the state, paradoxically free to “do their own thing” but highly constrained by the egalitarian directives of the licensors, who don’t come cheap btw.
Captain Capitalism is right, people in the 50s loved their families, had compassion for others and were bounded by an ethical standard. By my nearly 60 years on the planet, I think they have us beat. The faith community fell away and nothing has truly replaced its moral standards. Who makes deals with just a handshake anymore? Few and few between; in the 50s that was common.
I make the joke that perhaps, at least the US, it was more racist in the 50s because since then the Democrats decided to stop being racist.
I highly recommend William Gairdner’s recent book “The Great Divide: Why Liberals and Conservatives Will Never, Ever Agree.” It’s a good read that really explains the mindset behind much of the silly statism we see today which provides perspective on what the Dippers have in store for AB and Canada with their plans to expand the welfare state, and why the Liberals have happily followed.

Nothing has changed from the progressive collectivist regime that Lenin put in place and Stalin and Hitler built upon. Lenin and Hitler had to take over non-compliant media and bend it to their agenda. In the case of North America and Europe, the media was subverted and taken over by the progressives a half century ago and are partners with progressive politicians to implement the agenda of destroying the family unit. This is why they hate PM Harper so much, as he is temporarily standing in their way.
