  1. My gosh, these flags make our provincial flags look like masterpieces of style and taste. Our NB flag has a lion and some sort of galleon on it.

  2. Arizona is good: a city rising out of the desert
The Phoenix Sun bird (rising from its Ashes) is from Greek Mythology, it predates the Japanese rising Sun (copy cats)

  3. mhb – don’t forget that it shows the rest of us our place. Maple leafs from coast to coast, in the places that matter. I’ve never lived far enough east or south for maple trees to grow wild, so I guess that means I’m not part of their Canada.

  4. Arizona Trivia:
When the City of Phoenix became the Capital they beat out Prescott by one Vote, the missing vote belonged to a Prescott fellow with a glass eye. The night before the vote he had a romp with a Prostitute who got thirsty during the night and swallowed the glass of water including his glass eye. He had to wait 2 days until she passed his glass eye…. Nobody could prove that the Phoenix group had paid her .

  5. Oh me oh my. The Washington Post has hired a 16 year old to write stupid little tweets about state flags. It’s a reflection of the superficiality of our times. I viewed the entire article on my iphone just to get the full effect and damn near was hit by a car as I viewed it. (Be careful out there my friends. Other people have no respect for your phone viewing and tweeting privileges.)
And, as a point of clarification, the most popular flag in the U.S. (other than the national flag) is not a state flag at all but rather the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (Lee’s army). As flags go, it’s one of the finest looking ever created.

  6. None of those flags have a black person on them so they’re all illegitimate!
Every American state flag should have Oprah Winfrey in one corner and Al Sharpton on the other. Only then will it be fair.

  7. “I’ve never lived far enough east or south for maple trees to grow wild”
Acer saccharum does not grow, at all, in northern Alberta.

  8. That means you live in “flyover country” distinguished by the fact it pays more to Confederation than it gets. Remember growing up in interior BC, where the comment of the war-veteran neighbours was that Canada ended at the Rockies and BC ended at Hope (later amended to the Okanagan when the Socreds gained power). The best I’ve ever seen was the vine maple in BC, though we are now getting the Manitoba maple on the praries.
For that matter, BC chose the dogwood, which grows only in the lower mainland. Was an adult before I saw a real tree. Alberta, at least, chose a flower which can be found throughout the province, though the local CBC gardening expert strongly discouraged transplanting one into the home garden on the grounds that it (and I’m going from memory) would take over the garden, was a bully, and couldn’t be eradicated one introduced. Then he made a “cute” remark about comparing the flower’s characteristics to a certain Alberta political party. Put another way, the Alberta wild rose is tough, hardy, and doesn’t give up.
