Great Western Terrier Specialties

A few readers asked for photos from our recent road trip to the shows at Long Beach — so here are a handful.

Handling a friend’s dog “Chica”, who won her class (above) and my new puppy, Minuteman Up With The Birds (at right) to a reserve on Saturday.
His litter brother “George” (Destineez Wild Blue Yonder) was Best Bred-By in Show the same day.

Even with the drought-ravaged turf (and burrs!) Queen Mary park is a fabulous venue.

ava_jump.jpg GrCh.Minuteman Sweet Justice (Ava) celebrates winning “Select” at the National Specialty by jumping into my arms. After getting her “rat”. Always a crowd pleaser!

Win or lose, you gotta have fun.

  1. Beautiful dogs – with a lot of class! The lady ain’t too shabby, neither!

  2. Yup, pretty sharp lookin’ little doggies.
But when it comes to struttin’ their stuff, they can’t hold a candle to my ol’ Greater Glengarry Moosehound, Jerome.

  3. Thanks Kate.
    Congratulations. Long road trip.
Thanks for SDA and what it does.
Hope you and Premier Brad are up to a few thousand Albertans moving to SK in the next couple of years. ☺

  4. Kate is surely showing off some handsome beasts, congratulations.
Here is another winner, for ugliest doggie.

And the winner is Quasi Modo! The World’s ugliest dog.
In a contest of 25 finalists held at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California, the 10-year-old cross between a pit bull and a Dutch Shepherd took first prize.
Quasi Modo suffers from spinal birth defects that have left him with a disfiguring hunchback. He was pulled from an animal shelter after being abandoned by a veterinarian in Loxahatchee, Florida.
In his biography posted on the contest’s website, Quasi tries to explain himself:
“My appearance can be a little unsettling to some (I have had grown men jump on top of their cars to get away from me because they thought I was a hyena or Tasmanian devil) but once they get to know me I win them over with my bubbly personality.”
Also, here is some music to while away some of the time behind the wheel across the USA done by some Canadian gals out of Kamloops.

A great western tune to accompany the Great Western Terriers.

  5. Nice photo’s. I love terriers, and their personalities. I grew up with a wirehaired fox terrier in the UK. An incredible rat catcher, he knew what to do instinctually the very first time he saw one.
My daughter now has Schnauzer, another handsome and very intelligent dog.

  6. Bravo!
Did you have to explain to those Saskatchewan canines that all that blue in the background wasn’t alfalfa?
It also looks like you and your charges enjoy these outings.

  7. Well, I took my 2 Schnauzers (one Standard, one Mini) to the ball park and let them run around for a while yesterday. Kinda the same 🙂

  8. As read in a local Saskatchewan Paper…”Wawota resident reports to RCMP that his car was keyed, later after washing it, he found it was not damaged.” Now that is Mud!….. Long Beach, Cal was not a healthy place after dark in 1989..frequent gun shots of drive-by gang shootings…I spent 2 weeks there at a bonded warehouse sorting out a major Customs screw up by lazy NBC morons. It made NJ seem like a childrens theme park

  9. Who would know that in this mild mannered dog fancier beats the heart of a lion. Well done Kate, roll on.

  10. This may sound stupid kate but do you as a trainer/breeder have to have certain posture procedure training or preparation like i mean are you judged as well when you show your dog? ie how you walk your posture or the way you hold the leash type of stuff?
Internet can screw up messages so i will say here im not being rude or sarcastic just a question out of curiosity.

  11. Dogs are the best. Had cavalier spaniels, great Dane, daschund, but no terriers so far.

  12. I look at the sort of complex grooming your high maintenance breed has and it amazes me that you do this at the competitive level and have so many other irons in the fire, and are successful with them at the same time too.
You are an exceptional person Kate. I admire you.

  13. We used to have this small dog that would sit on out cat cat did’nt mind at all

  14. Paul, the handlers aren’t judged as part of a team if that’s what you’re asking. But handling can make or break a dog — and there are people who are full time professionals who are incredibly tough to beat. It’s kind of like figure skating with French judges, fancy dogs, and old fat people.
