“Organic” Is The Latin Word For “Grown In Pig Shit”

Genetic Literacy Project;

But let’s be clear here. Non-GMO farming is not the same thing as organic farming. Many farmers practice conventional farming while avoiding GMOs. While organic farmers use less synthetic pesticides than conventional farmers, non-GMO conventional farmers often use more chemicals, and more dangerous ones, than farmers using GM seeds.
How could that be? As Marc Brazeau noted at Food and Farm Discussion Lab, what Chipotle isn’t telling you is that its new “non GMO” menu is hardly a model of farming sustainability.

  1. Organic is too darn expensive and i cant afford this grow green stuff and its not nutrionaly better then conventionaly raised food

  2. Not only is organic no more nutritious, I have doubts whether much of what is sold as organic actually is organic. I think the losses from insects, the yield reduction from no fertilizer, and the added labour needed to manage the crop would render organic plants many times more expensive than non-organic and they are not. Since there aren’t 24 hour inspectors in the fields, I highly suspect cheating. I have been involved true organic crops for personal use and bugs are a constant diversion. It wasn’t all that long ago when food took up 1/3 of income. Now it is probably less than 5-10 % if one minimizes processed food.

  3. Although I have read the Literature about the Sumerian civilization extensively, and have sincere doubts about gold mining space aliens…..there is the inconvenient truth that most of our domestic crops and livestock [exceptions: Llamas, potatoes, corn(zea maiz), quinoa, and rice,] originated in Mesopotamia and like Cro Magnon lack any direct connection to wild species.
    IMHO this makes differentiating non-gmao from gmo is probably an exercise in political correctness.

  4. GMO foods should be labelled with exactly what gene or genes was inserted into the foodstuff.
    I think it was in the 90’s that the GWB admin FDA said inserting a tiny bit of DNA, which is itself non-toxic, shall not be considered a significant additive. kinda makes me think of folk selling corn or grain with the botulism toxin gene in it.

  5. I am constantly pushing back against non-GMO faux-intellectual, neo-liberal do-gooders. Thanks for articles like this one.

  6. Why dont the Grand Exualted Poo Poo Head Liam Nesson donate some horsie poo for the organic gardens

  7. The evidence to date fails to show any significant health outcome differences between the 2 diets, “organic” vs conventional. “Consensus” (is this a dirty word now?) is that more watching has to happen because nobody knows yet. This comes by way of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the ‘Center for Health Policy and Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research, Stanford University, California’. The important thing is that this issue is being closely monitored.
