Sorry Warren (and Matthew) but this utopian sentiment is where I drift away from JC and dogmatic Christians – I and not now, nor ever have or will be, a “cheek turner” – particularly in the face of evil. To do so is to sacrifice oneself to that evil and in doing so help that evil grow and consume more good people.
    I very much support the old Testament form of law and “an eye for and eye a tooth for a tooth” is as close to earthy justice as we can hope for, while we are waiting for the big rapture and cosmic justice do-over we have been promised. AEFAE-ATFAT is the best formula to keep evil in tow and frustrate the lord who is supposed to rule the earth.
    Our justice system is based on AEFAE-ATFAT – a sort of accounting for sins and an equalizing of damages, tempered with Christian aversion to outright cruelty, and it worked pretty good too – until the demented Progs got hold of it and made the justice system a welfare program for criminals and an affirmative action plan for evil.

  6. Great points, Occam. As a student of history and a Roman Catholic…I have often wondered how many of those Christian nations in the middle East and N. Africa turned the other cheek until it was too late and the Islamic hordes overwhelmed and destroyed them. As a Roman Catholic I wonder how many Pater Nosters (Our Father) were prayed by those long-dead, countless millions that went unanswered, at least in their life-times–and how many more today are still going unanswered as ISIS rampages through 2000 yr old Christian communities again. It is for the philosophers in our midst to answer these questions–but I’m with you. That old “turn the other cheek” saw is the excuse Leftists and cowards use to stop fighting or not fight at all–even if it means the death of all they hold dear. It also makes me want to punch the f@ck out of priests who tell their flock to put down their arms and “turn the other cheek”.

  10. “Turn the other cheek” was a non-violent response within an honor-shame society to challenge abuse. It was about forcing the abuser to either bring shame upon themselves or to stop the abuse to avoid being shamed within the community. It is not violence but it is certainly not a passive acceptance of violence either.

    The first thing we were taught was to read the material. Matthew 5:38-42 is arguing against that part of Hammurabi’s Code or so it seems to me.

    Old Testament law was given by God to a specific people – the Jews. The principles in it are good but a study of the history of the Jews in the OT makes it very clear that mankind cannot live by it.

    As well, OT law was given for only a specific time – until the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. If Jesus is not the one and only Son of God then it’s fine for you to disregard Him. In that case do whatever seems right in your own eyes. Everyone else might as well do the same. That has always worked out well.
    However, if Jesus is the crucified Saviour and risen Lord then we need to at least try to pay attention to what He commanded us. Stubbornly doing our own thing is not an option even if for some reason we are still expecting a “big rapture and cosmic justice do-over.”
    I don’t claim to understand it all but I choose to put my trust in Jesus Christ rather than in the theories of my lost fellow human beings – or even in my own ideas. It’s a big universe; if we try to figure out everything on our own without the help of God, some of which He has provided in the Bible, we are toast.
    It’s simple in some ways and complicated in others.
    Have faith in Jesus and obey Him as best you are able. He will never let you down. That’s the simple part.
    Living in this violent messed-up world is the complicated part. Absolute pacifism cannot be right. There is a time to take action to oppose evil that is being done to those around us. This is never going to be easy but our hope is in Christ.

    Not everyone needs the help of “God”. I would venture that a “God” (or a “belief” thereof) is what has caused a lot of problems in the first place.

  15. According to Dennis Prager, an Orthodox Jew who has a daily radio show, the “eye for an eye” code refers to proportionality in punishment. One does not hang an offender for stealing something, etc.

  16. Nowhere on the link does it use the word biblical. And in the documentary, the line is “Islamic principle of an eye for an eye” (that quote is from the first 15 seconds of the video if anyone wants to confirm this.)
    The person in charge of the Twitter feed is the one who has translated that to Biblical. And should be reprimanded because it is not what is covered in the documentary, nor is it a true representation of biblical teachings (as has been discussed in other comments here.)
    And once again, we are given an example of why Twitter is a terrible source for news.

  17. Back in the day, I was taught that the “an eye for an eye” punishment code was meant to moderate punishment. Prior to that code, the punishment for even a minor offence could be vastly disproportionate to the offence, depending on the status of the offended. Hammurabi (and later the writers of the Old Testament) were trying to improve the justice system and reduce brutal retaliation.
    That being said, there are also passages in both the Old and New Testaments which referring to fighting for one’s rights and to protect others. Not so much in the New Testament, but that was written when the Romans had a heavy presence everywhere and the theme was more let us keep quiet and pray for decent government. In later centuries, though, the concept of the Church Militant was extended from a spiritual fight against evil to standing up physically to evil.

  19. Bingo, Frances. Also, Jesus was making a distinction between a legal code for a nation (and, I assume, the nation’s military) and an emphasis on grace in our individual interactions. It is possible for me as an individual to not take revenge into my own hands, and yet still have in place a legal and military system that unashamedly does mete out justice. Unfortunately, the second part of that equation is not happening, either in Canada or internationally.
    However, the main point to that story is that the media cannot keep their hatred of the Bible out of their feeds – trying to link it to Islam in order to discredit/misrepresent it by association. Frankly, it is linked in their minds, because they have no clue about either one.

  23. Only the NYT could equate the Islamic Republic with the Bible. ISIS is actively destroying any and all references to a society before Mohammed. As far as they are concerned the world did not exist before 580 AD. They may be taking a page from progressive historical revisionism but to take a page from the bible would be tantamount to apostasy.

    And yet He will still consign an unrepentant person to Hell to burn for an eternity, knowing full well ahead of time in His omniscience the choices that person will make, and permitting them to be born anyway. Doesn’t sound like the All-Loving Father to me. So that pretty much makes the concept of “free will” and “God” mutually exclusive.

    Here, if anybody else is still reading these comments, I may appear to be a heretic because I think it is possible that ultimately “hell” is the total destruction of the lost and not eternal torment. I’m in good company here since John Stott, a choice follower of Jesus, has proposed the likelihood of this. No, he isn’t a Seventh Day Adventist (they are annihilationists) but a prominent evangelical. It’s a bit of a long read but here’s what he had to say about it a while ago.
