If you watch carefully you can see tazer wires stuck in the cop as the guy is running away. I wonder if the guy tazed the cop during the struggle and the cop had no idea if the guy was still carrying the tazer while the wires were still in the cop. Watch carefully.
If he tazed the cop and might have had the tazer on him while he was running, its a fair shoot.
Well the cop has been charged with murder and after viewing the video, I agree with that decision. That alone may give pause to the race baiters.
The video shows the cop placing the tazer by the body. You can’t explain that away no matter how hard you try.
Greg G watch 00:18 carefully. What happened afterwards isn’t what matters, what matters is what the cop thought was happening at the time. You can clearly see tazer wires between the cop and the guy.
The cop isn’t going to have enough time to fully assess the situation at that point.
I’m going to wait to hear the full story rather than pull a Sharpton.
Yup, innocent people always attack cops and then run away. Love to see the rap sheet for this guy. BUT, the cop should have waited for the system to work, rather than address the issue as he did.
I counted about eight shots. The black cop came from the direction the dead guy was running. I doubt the guy would have gotten very far. Why shoot him? Why not just tackle him? I mean the dead guy was overweight and a slow runner, there was no need to kill him. JMO.

Tazer or not, the guy was running with his back to the cop. He was clearly not a threat so the cop’s actions went far beyond reason, especially for what is reported to be a traffic stop. This reminds me of those Toronto cops needlessly shooting that guy on the bus.
Zimmerman and Wilson were not guilty. This cop is guilty.
If you’re running away but you have a tazer with the wires attached to the cop then you are still a threat.
Hmm, you’re seeing things not there. The cop tasered the victim. That’s why you see wires. The taser was ineffective at stopping the victim and he ran.
The cop then later retrieved the taser and placed it beside the body.
Oh sh*t is right. I counted 8 rounds fired. This definitely looks damning to the cop, at no time did he look like he was in danger or fearing for his life. The cop could just pick him up later if the cop didn’t feel like jogging after him.

Might as well add my two cents of forensic analysis:
The video is 24 fps. You can watch frame-by-frame by holding down your “Shift” key and pressing your side-to-side arrows.
At exactly 18 seconds, the first clear image of the two can be seen. The officer seems to be using his left hand to hold the right hand of the suspect. The officer’s right hand looks like it is about to draw either the taser or his gun. There is some distance between the two men. A dark object is on the ground between the suspect’s legs.
At 18 seconds plus 8 frames, what I assume is the main casing of the taser (if that’s what it was – I’m just going by what everyone else is saying) first becomes visible on the ground…well behind the officer…perhaps four feet. The seven frames in between are blurry. But it is clear that the officer’s right hand comes off of his belt before they break contact – at about the same time. Just a suggestion – but perhaps the officer was first drawing his taser and then either dropped it or it was knocked away by the suspect.
From here on, what you see is what you thought you saw…a guy running away and being shot in the back.
I agree it is wise to not jump all the way to conclusions. But, my read from this bit of evidence is that (unless the object between the suspect’s legs at 18 seconds was actually the taser), the suspect never had control of the object and was not trying to use it against the officer. At the very least, certainly not at the time he broke away and started running. Thus, the heat of the moment argument doesn’t wash at this point.
At this point, looks like second-degree murder. He’ll probably get off with manslaughter though.
And if it wasn’t for a random passerby with a smartphone, this likely would’ve ended up being deemed a good shoot by the local police SIU.
Makes you wonder how many other “justified” police shootings would be less so if only video evidence was available.
Yeah, that’s what I’m gonna do next time I’m stopped for any infraction….RUN!

If I have a gun and someone is shot by said gun, I can expect to be hauled up in court and the whole story examined, (should I be lucky enough to survive the arrest process). The same should be true for a cop. Forget the “line of duty” crap. Forget the “internal investigation” bullshzt. Someone shot someone, and if there is going to be an acceptable outcome, then a consistent examination of the facts HAS to be done by a process clearly independent of the accused and the deceased. EVERY time.
Just to add a bit of local context to what clearly (to me) looks like excessive force and an over-reaction by the cop firing 8 shots at a fleeing black guy. NORTH Charleston is a black slum neighborhood … it’s the scary part of town (before you get to the big bridge over to Mt. Pleasant) that you HAVE TO drive through to get to all the charming parts of Charleston. That shouldn’t mean anything in this case – the white cop shot that fleeing black man down like he was just a rabid dog.

1) No matter what just don’t run from police IF they arrest you for a legal offence that you have committed be it child support or murder. Don’t run . Face justice. Plead your case in court.

That out of the way, my take on the video is that, sadly, this cop is going away for many years….regardless of what may have occurred in the preceding few minutes. I’ve been there…fighting with a culprit by myself. The adrenaline rush is unbelievable, but, damn, you’ve got to be able to control yourself. He couldn’t, and for a 10 second lapse in judgement, his life is essentially over as he knew it.
My first thought in observing the video is that it all boils down to fitness. The cop was a slug. If he were 40 pounds lighter and in good shape, he should have been able to jog beside the culprit whilst administering pepper spray to his face.
I experienced literally a dozen situations over 10 years where I could have employed lethal force and been justified. However, I was fit, I had confidence in my abilities, and never once came close to shooting….even against more than one knife wielding subjects.
With the exception of a gun call, I can’t imagine grabbing for your pistol, when you still had pepper spray and a collapsible baton at your disposal.
Sucks to be them.
that was an execution, the kid wasn’t going anywhere, wasn’t armed, was not a threat, the cop just shot him.

He killed because he did not expect anyone to record it. Fortunately someone did. If it hasn’t been recorded the investigation of the cop by other cops would have shown justifiable homicide and the usual jackboot lickers here would be bending over backwards to excuse the executioner.
All I see here is another example of excessive unwarranted force – unless this guy has priors for armed crimes or attempted murder or warrants for these things, gunning down an uncooperative traffic stop is the stuff of soviet Russia.
There’s another problem here that I don’t see anybody addressing. Prior to the video being made public, police claimed that they attempted to save Scott’s life until paramedics arrived. This is as obvious a lie as has ever been told.
If the claim was simply a PR move, whoever put it out there needs to be fired. If it was actually an official part of the report filed by officers on the scene, they need to be charged with the same crime that someone who isn’t a cop would be charged with for filing a false report.
There’s no avoiding the fact that every once in a while a few explicitly bad cops will end up on police departments. The only reason they can remain on police departments is because “good cops” cover for them. If “good cops” like whoever decided to make up the lie about trying to save Scott’s life start facing jail time or their complicity in the bad cops’ criminal behavior, it’ll be a lot easier to get rid of the bad cops.

This is why I want all police to have body cameras, as well as dashcams. Cameras protect the innocent cops and innocent citizens because they are an impartial 3rd party.
If Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson had a body camera, the whole “hands up” BS would have been exposed as a fraud. A lot of businesses in Ferguson never would have burned. A lot of race baiters never would have been able to demagogue for money and fame.

Darren Wilson should have never been allowed to drive himself to the station, he should have never been allowed to clean himself up before talking to forensics, he should have surrender his firearm to forensics on the scene instead of placing it himself in the zip lock upon his arrival. Cops in Ferguson simply could not care less about just another ghettoer getting their just deserts. They did not expect the whole thing to blow up in their faces, they felt the shooting was probably ok (it probably was) and said f*** it.

The System will always have bad Cops who have a hair trigger, they need to be fleshed out & prosecuted.. BUT
The law needs to have teeth for those that run or avoid arrest. I would think an Automatic >2 years (Penn) would reduce these violent events, with body cameras as the only evidence required.

What lapse are you referring to, the shooting or the planting of evidence when Michael Thomas Slager went back to where he fired from, picked up the stun gun, and after walking back to the dying man dropped it beside him?
I’m thinking that planting that evidence indicates moral turpitude rather than a lapse of judgement.
And those other cops that lied about trying to give emergency medical aid to the dying man to mitigate what Slager did? The term Americans have for that is accessories (after the fact) to murder.

The people I see in uniform these days appear to lack the physical fitness to do their jobs properly. So, like so many Americans I know today in all segments of society, they rely on prosthetics like guns, tractors or viagra to compensate for their metabolic sloth.
(My fat neighbor uses his diesel backhoe to till his tiny vegetable garden, when a simple shovel would do.)
Some suggestions: We need to reward physical fitness and de-emphasize union ratings for seniority when granting promotions to police and firefighters. And, if the standards used to judge officers’ fitness in the forces’ regular annual performance tests are too low (as I think they are), then we need to raise them.

IIRC He offered to do so at the scene, but no one had a spare gun for him. And the supervisor at the scene did not want to detail another officer to drive him away from the scene, because he was afraid a riot was possible, and he wanted all his people at the scene.
