The Lives of Others is a disturbing film about East Germany during the Soviet era. It’s a careful examination of how the government got neighbours to spy on neighbours and the authorities spied on everyone.

Fantastic flick. Very chilling.
Will it be possible to “store up” say.. 3 or 4 days of someone idling their car and send them all in to the bureau of compliance on consecutive days so it appears they’re habitual offenders and quite possibly don’t give a care?
In that way, the fines may start to compound into the thousands of dollars without the idling enviro terrorist being able to correct their ill thought out behavior before they’re aware they’re being recorded.

Maybe the figures are correct, I have no way of knowing. But notice that there is no mention of idling in traffic jams or at stop lights. Nor any consideration for heat and cold (heater or air conditioner use). Or charging the battery on your Prius and Volt.
On the other hand, a number of cars are now configured to turn the engine off when not moving …..
The fines are hefty. You can get half the fine by reporting violations. I’m certain you will be able to remain anonymous. How many people will try to make a living with their smart phone …. ???
Stasi was one of the reasons my father refused to even contemplate visiting East Germany.
He most likely would have ‘whacked’ one of their agents; given the opportunity.
Of course he got to meet the local police chief in Czechoslovakia, whom the company later dubbed
“Dr Laser Beam” for his piercing and penetrating eyes. The VB, or Venice Bakery boys as they were jokingly referred to, wanted all the Canadians to surrender their passports to the local police constabulary rather than being stored in the company safe.
This got a big fat ‘up yours’ from the ‘old man’, then project manager, who indicated to the 24 spooks gathered around the office conference table that they could go to hell and further they could finish the project on their own. Then the spooks would have to explain to their political superiors why the $1 Billion project was completely bereft of staff and unfinished.
After that “Dr Laser Beam” and the ‘old man’ understood each other very well.
The only thing these spook advocates understand in an iron fist and monetary leverage…

Great anecdote Hans. Not surprising in the least. My father-in-law and his brother-in-law refused to give up their passports in the hotel in Yugoslavia, and the staff went on strike and would no longer serve them.
It is not surprising that increasingly governments of all sorts are adopting East German or Soviet Russian tactics in people control. After all this ideology has been taught in our universities for decades now.

I recently saw on Netflix another great film about East Germany – Barbara by director Christian Petzold. Story of a woman doctor forced to live in a small East Germany town because of her desire to live in West Germany with her lover.
Rosenthal was apparently endorsed by Michael Moore during the election campaign, that should tell you something.
