The Border Collie And The Carriage Horse;
If the carriage horses are being abused, then so is Red. If they can ban the carriage horses, and the elephants, and the ponies, and the horses in Hollywood, then they will one day come for Red and all of the animals who work with us and who have shared the joys and travails of the would with us since the dawn of time. They will all continue to disappear. I see now that for reasons I don’t quite comprehend, this is the goal of the modern-day animal rights movement, not a side affect. Every animal is a victim, every human an abuser.
Thomas Jefferson wrote that personal freedom is as fragile as it is precious. It can die in a swift stroke, or it can suffer death by “a thousand cuts.” I believe the social movement that calls itself an animal rights movement is diminishing our personal freedom to live with animals, and that the right of animals to live and work in our world is dying by a thousand cuts. That is why the carriage horse controversy is so important.
I am reminded of the book “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London and his descriptions of the sled dogs, a wild unruly pack until hooked to the sled. I especially recall one section where the lead dog is hurt (internally somehow)and is cut out of the traces so that he can run behind the sled where the going is easier. He would have none of it! He knew his job and his position and wasn’t going to give it up.

It kills me that these dicks and their LIV supporters don’t seem to realize that if we stop using domesticated animals, we’ve got no reason to keep them alive in the future so they’ll all die off.
I have neither a dog nor horse in this debate, but it strikes me as bizarre that people with no relation to the animals may drive a debate that doesn’t address a substantial issue. If you have vets and those working with animals saying they’re ok, I have a hard time taking that position seriously. Not appeal to authority, but to those with direct experience in determining if an animal has been abused.

The small animal vets are also being overrun by these ‘animal rights’ people. Almost all the new graduates agree with the direction of the humane society in my experience.
We had a stray cat wander in that we took in.
We had expensive leather furniture that our new household member took a liking to using as a scratching post.
Rather than getting rid of the pet, I took it to the local small animal vet and enquired on the cost to have it’s front claws removed, as well as it’s required shots.
The young female vet was aghast and sternly told me that the barbaric declawing was no longer offered by their compassionate vet service.
I looked her straight in the eye and asked her what she charged to euthanize a cat. After a pregnant pause, she told me that in this case, she would make an exception and declaw the cat.
They’re probably counting on pressure to make those animals wards of the state; often to such types there is a dire shortage of every resource, other than the government coffers so long as the will is there.
The ‘Anti Everythings’ can’t comprehend the sheer joy or dedication of these working animals when they’re allowed to do what they do best.
One only has to witness the thoroughbreds at the racetrack or in front of a chuckwagon or doing the barrels. They love the competition.
Or companion/seeing-eye dogs, police/rescue animals, and the adorable border collies at work.
Pretty sure Kate’s pooches luv strutting their stuff too!

My brother took their little dog to the vet because she wasn’t doing too good, the vet (a young lady) asked what they fed the dog, “table scraps” was the answer. Vet, well you will shorten her life substantially”,. Brother, “she’s 16 years old, going on 17”. Vet, “oh, then it must be her age that is the problem”> Damn air-heads some of these vets are. When I was young, that’s all the dogs and cats ever got, was table scraps.

The animal rights oriented veterinarians are, in effect, working to “euthanize” their own job.
At the same time that we have female veterinarians opening a practice in every strip mall in the country.
We have a shortage of doctors for human beings and women having too few babies to even keep up replacement population levels.

Americans have a long history of calling for the state to impose bans of things they morally disapprove of. It almost sounds too outrageous to be true, but we actually passed a constitutional amendment banning alcoholic beverages, which have been consumed by virtually all human societies since the dawn of history! Some years later we banned a *plant*, and ended up making criminals out of millions for cultivating it or consuming it. In light of this history, a movement to ban domesticated animals, as insane as that sounds, doesn’t shock me as much as it should.

My .02 on the horse issue. We have pleasure horses…expensive pets for trail riding ( but it keeps our teenagers out of trouble and busy…but I digress). Every once in awhile we rehab a starving mistreated horse but have to sell it after its in top shape because without a rider for it or a job, or someone to spend many hours a week working with it and riding it, the horse becomes a problem.. not just a problem to us people but to its own herdmates. Just like people that dont work *cough*welfare*cough*…. one needs PURPOSE to live or we become destructive.
