    It appears that Western Hudson Bay polar bears have not declined appreciably since 2004, according to mark-recapture studies as well as aerial surveys. An unpublished 2011 mark-recapture study concluding the population had declined since 2004 was apparently based on a statistical misconstruction that was corrected more than a year ago in another unpublished report. However, you wouldn’t have gathered any of that from comments made by prominent polar bear researchers to the media since 2013. The fact that these taxpayer-funded reports were not made public has allowed this deplorable situation to occur.

    A study by medical journal The Lancet said donors should invest their limited resources on additional bed nets as the most cost-effective solution to tackling malaria, costing an average of $2.20 per person compared to $6.70 for insecticide.

  6. I had read some time back that the polar bear population had gone from about 6 thousand in the 60’s to over 25 thousand a year or so ago. if ice contributes to their increase then they will indeed increase this year.

    on summer trip thru North Shore of Lake Superior, halfway between White River and Wawa Ontario we stopped for a coffee.
    the shop owner had a photo of two hunters behind a black bear. the bear was 700+lbs!
    he said bears outnumber people in N. Ontario, not wrong.

    Suzuki and his family all take nice salaries from their Foundation.

    The new information shows dramatic failure of the Sheep Mountain chronology as an out-of-sample temperature proxy, as it has a dramatic divergence from NH temperature since 1980, the end of the Mann et al (and many other) reconstructions. While the issue is very severe for the Mann reconstructions, it affects numerous other reconstructions, including PAGES2K.

    The new results of Salzer et al 2014 (though not candid on the topic) fully demonstrate this point in respect to Sheep Mountain. In the warm 1990s and 2000s, the proxy not only doesn’t respond linearly to higher temperatures, it actually goes the wrong way. This will result in very negative RE values for MBH-style reconstructions from its AD1000 and AD1400 networks when brought up to date, further demonstrating these networks have no real “skill” out of sample.
