  2. The Obama approach seems to be to make a big deal about nothing – to make “concessions” on behalf of Americans, then fail to bind the other party in any other way, such as:
    – the “agreement” with Iran to curtail nuclear weapons development
    – the “deal” with Russia to remove chemical weapons from Syria
    – this latest “climate deal” with China that binds them in no way, but sets up the US for totally unrealistic cuts to fossil fuel use
    Others can chip in other examples of these types of symbolic/US binding “deals.” Apparently the Obama administration plans to force this agreement through by bypassing Congress. Good luck with that.

    Plus, the only reason US emissions have dropped is (1) they are outsourcing all of their manufacturing to China (2) Obama has tried everything he possibly can to destroy the economy.
    That 26% cut Obama is promising will finish of the US as a great power.

    The U.S. acting as guarantor in the deal between Ukraine and Russia wherein Ukraine gave their nuclear weapons to Russia in exchange for a Russian “promise” to respect sovereign Ukrainian territory.

If the title of her book wasn’t stolen, it is remarkably close to John Cheever’s “Falconer”. Perusal of a couple of reviews suggest it isn’t the greatest novel of our time.

  17. More than just problematic food, Chinese factories which make cosmetic products: Skin/hand creams, shampoo/conditioners, toothpaste etc. use filthy unfiltered water in these products and the health vis-a-via the workers on the factory floor, matters not at all to factory management.
    In the book ‘Made Poorly in China’, the author details an incident where one of the workers had a skin disease and his sloughing diseased skin was ending up in the product, which was hair shampoo.

  25. It is not too hard to understand how Ms. May was elected into office to represent Saanich and the Gulf Islands. It is only a few days ago that the local liberal rag, Times-Colonist, printed a front page article from, presumably, a constituent of Ms. May’s extolling the virtues of Obama and pondering how the US electorate could be so stupid in the last elections in returning both the House and the Senate to the Republicans.

I suppose someone might try to argue that Ms. May is channeling her inner Justin Trudeau: what else could this Chinese non-commitment possibly be other than a case in point about why we all need to marvel at the PRC’s “basic dictatorship” which allows it to “turn on a dime to protect its environment”?
    This “agreement” — a characterization no sentient person would ascribe to this farce — bears all the hallmarks of the Kyoto Accord, and Paul Martin, Jr.’s eight-year-late charade about implementing it. How did that work again? Oh, right, I remember: China got to do nothing, but the Western democracies had to pay money to China so that the latter could continue to emit CO2 (notice I didn’t use the term pollute, which is actually China’s real air environmental issue). And why is it, again, that there are so many Jr.s in the top ranks of the Liberal Party of Canada?
    Yep, a sixteen-year delay in having to do anything sure sounds like “turning on a dime” to me. And the only people who are likely to obey the PRC’s “basic dictatorship” are leftist Western politicians (Obama, May and Trudeau, Jr., come to mind, surprisingly).
    At any rate, on Black Mamba’s question, I’d have to say that Ms. May is not retarded, as retardation, by definition, implies some level of brain function.

    Those who claim that they wish to “save the planet” (or the environment) should know that neither the planet nor the environment care. Only people care. They care about a lot of things like survival and hopefully something a little more than that. Economic progress gives them better chances at survival as well as a better life, which includes a cleaner healthier,safer environment. The environmentalist’s assault on fossil fuels, although perhaps just a minor irritant to us in wealthy countries, is devastating to the majority of humans who fight each day for mere survival. What kind of humanity is it that people in rich countries attempt to impose more poverty on those who not so rich?
