Let’s not get bogged down with details like IS starting in Syria instead of Iraq or IS not exactly being al Qaeda. IS isn’t exactly Santa Anna either and Mexico isn’t Iraq but you’ve got to admit that IS fighters do look a lot like Mexicans and Mexico does bear a striking resemblance to Syria.
These are mere quibbles compared to the grave necessity of Obama having to avoid the humiliation of asking Congress to declare a new war when Congress has declared older wars at least five times, yes?
This “legal basis for war” fixation is just the sort of political nonsense that has strangled any possibility that Western states will ever seriously tackle threats to their national interests.

He cannot use the Mexican American Declaration of War as justification. That was settled by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848. That was back when wars had victors and losers, and were not endless skirmishes interspersed with UN Peace Initiatives and UN Truces.
