Our son-in-law was laid off in Winnipeg a few weeks ago, his company closed down in Canada. He is 33, a software engineer, and he and our daughter have a new baby.
Now Roblox has recruited him to Silicon Valley. Our daughter will be able to stay at home with our granddaughter, which she would not have been able to do in Winnipeg, like most working parents we know. A huge plus, considering the woke goofball education systems everywhere in the West.
We are proud of him. He earned this. It is an extraordinary opportunity for their young family.

The sad reality is that most Manitoba voters don’t care about stories like this. In fact, they’re aggressively indifferent to them, which is why they keep rewarding the NDP with electoral victories more often than not. They prefer to live in a magical world where the Premier can halt all consideration of a data center in the blink of an eye while extolling the virtues of an LNG pipeline to Churchill that everyone else knows is never going to happen.
I reached out to the gentleman who posted this, because I know lots of people in Silicon Valley who I can introduce his son too.
In the X thread, one person wrote that Teachers Can’t Afford to Live in Silicon Valley. Though I know this isn’t true, I wonder what the point of such a comment is? Is this person suggesting that the young Canadian man shouldn’t be trying to do the best for himself and his family?!? That’s INSANE.
I don’t know why anyone is surprised, I did this in 1992. Fled the Great White North as an ADULT to get the education I wanted and couldn’t get here, got a PT license, did all the things, worked, got on the real estate ladder, and overall did pretty good.
If I’d stayed here in Canuckistan there’s a fair chance I’d be living in a van now. The nation of no-opportunity, and it has been pretty much my whole life. You want to get ahead, move to the USA.
Who is John Galt?
Prime video Atlas Shrugged: Part I
https://www.primevideo.com/detail/0HBTTATDFGVCCUST2V6YL1VQMS/
I am John Galt.
I’m not going to clicm on it because I know how most Prime shows go. Let me guess- John Galt is now a black transgender and the whole thing is reimagined as the struggle to remain creatively inspired as a modern artist in a racist, misogynist, anti-trans world?
John Galt, after shamelessly exploiting blacks, women and minorities, realizes his mistakes, gets gender reassignment and usher in the Socialist Paradise by surrendering his means of production to THE PEOPLE!!
John Galt is a civic agency that provides public toilets in parts of Cambridge, Ontario.
Ah potty humour, because scat is where it’s at!
I’m doing what I can to make scat singing fashionable again.
These are the consequences of living in an unsustainable egalitarian socialist/communist Monarchy. You made the initial mistake of raising your family there while lapping up the meager benefits of the socialist system. You son moving is the correction that should have happened 2 generations ago. Take responsibility for your lot in life.
This situation is happening in the US as young workers flee blue states and blue cities for free states like South Carolina and Florida.
Only thing keeping me here in wretched New Jersey is my elderly parents. Praying I can manage to get out of here before the state totally collapses.
This has been happening since Moby Dick was a minnow.
Doctors, nurses, engineers oh my.
If so many Canadians weren’t jealous and petty, they would have a government that promoted/championed the individual and the entrepreneur, rather than a malevolent Mommy State.
Don’t forget to add coward and weak. Canadians need mommy government to hold their frightened little hands.
When I look out west from Ontario, I see B.C. (so much potential, such a mess), Alberta (nuff said – very rich province), Saskatchewan (lots of stuff from farm products to oil & gas and uranium). Then I look at Manitoba. The Internet tells me how great Manitoba is from agriculture to aerospace to mining. But the Government of Canada website tells me Manitoba is the second highest recipient of equalization payments. Why does such a great economy need money from other provinces?
Regarding mining, two of the provinces largest mining areas (Flin Flon and Thompson) are nearing end of life. Then what? Winnipeg will be subsidizing Northern Manitoba and Canada will be paying for Winnipeg.
Manitoba “used” to be great! I went to University of Manitoba, Faculty of Architecture from 1971 to 1975. I had previously lived in Edmonton. Winnipeg was the big sister of Edmonton/Calgary and the distant cousin of Regina. I think the provincial voters started believing the grifter governments (I am looking at you NDP) about 50 years ago. I was in Winnipeg on Friday, April 24, enroute to my new home in Ottawa (to be closer to family and friends). Winnipeg has terrible roads and the downtown Portage Avenue has become a part of the Urban Reserve, with all of the attendant problems – lots of garbage, at least 2 Money Marts on the stretch from Main Street to Osborne. And Manitoba has wonderful black, rich soil and is blessed with better summer weather (although I understand that Regina and southern Saskatchewan are having a “soggy summer”) When your province is blessed with good climate and geography, any financial problems are caused by “less than special” governments – both provincial and municipal.
Manitoba’s been burdened with too many Bolsheviks since about 1916.
Thompson actually has about 40 years of nickel found that is available to mine.
The problem? The unmined ore is located in Manitoba, and Canada.
Thompson used to produce the world’s best nickel, with Asian buyers willing to pay double the LME price. Then government and new owners stepped in.
Also, the Canadian government was the one that stopped the two Canadian mining companies INCO and Falconbridge from merging, the rest of the world was okay with the merger, with both companies then bought out by foreigners.
The previous era of the brain drain was the 90s, when, gosh golly, the Liberals were the government too, with Screwface leading the way down the drain!
What a coincidence!
This time though, the cretinous Liberals seem quite content to do little to nothing about it, since they love the doctors and engineer Gimmegrants coming from India.
The decline will continue to get steeper with this national socialist anti-business government. Hope all your finances are secure!
“Screwface”
Love it!
Hated that corrupt SOB.
Uh oh. Dow and Nasdaq both UP another 500 points today to near all time highs. You’re gonna need some bigger elbows. Yeah, yeah … the stock market is not reflective of the US economy according to Marmot mouth. Unh. Huh.
Dow up 640 points
Nasdaq up 582 points
I’m old enough to remember when the rising tide of the US economy lifted all the Canadian boats. But now … your PM and every single Canadian politician is determined to never allow that to happen … ever again.
I wish the young man headed to Silicon Valley the best. But that grass isn’t as green as it used to be, not by a long shot. Hopefully he’s not too white, or too straight or not Indian enough. Hopefully his working area isn’t downtown in a blue city that makes Winnipeg look like the Vatican.
I hope he likes income taxes and traffic.
I just drove the hour long trip to see my granddaughters … yesterday … on a Sunday .., and traffic was a nightmare. Mainly along the Hindu stretches of 880 and 101.

Also…couldn’t help but notice we have some Ayn Rand lovers here. How very charming!
Well, it seems that not a few good people here have understood the virtue of selfishness.
I am just going to say: true comparative literature studies can be very helpful.
The paradox is amusing.
Spongebob Squarepants understands the virtue of shellfishness.
Laid off in Winnipeg and now leaving Manitoba?
Thats a win/win.
Don’t be crushed, your minor loss is their great gain. Parents are supposed to have their children go upwards and onwards, to bigger and better, this definitely is. Don’t keep them in the dieing Manitoba.
