“When the President does it, that means that it is not illegal”

Ross Douthat’s latest column is well worth a read, if even just for historical purposes, to understand how fully Obama & Co. have destroyed the American political system:

Anyone paying attention knows that no such impeachment plan is currently afoot. So taken on its own, the impeachment chatter would simply be an unseemly, un-presidential attempt to raise money and get out the 2014 vote.
But it isn’t happening in a vacuum, because even as his team plays the impeachment card with gusto, the president is contemplating — indeed, all but promising — an extraordinary abuse of office: the granting of temporary legal status, by executive fiat, to up to half the country’s population of illegal immigrants.

  1. Among AliBama’s goals has been the destruction of the social and political institutions—law, politics, morality, the Constitution; even language itself—that make America work. The political class is letting him get away with it. Now, he’s just mocking us.

  2. As the Roman Republic made way for the Empire, its institutions were largely kept intact. However, they now answered
to the will of one man, variously called the Commander (Imperator) and the First Citizen (Princeps). In fact for a long
time there was no office of Emperor. Rather, the Imperator and Princeps held most of the public offices which had
formerly been held by different men*. If that was not sufficient, then of course opponents could be handled by outright
murder or more frequently through the judicial system rigged to answer to the will of the First Citizen.
It was so much neater that way.
*Like a caliph, as Pontifex Maximus, he was also the chief religious leader.

  3. I never had much use for the American governmental system, especially at the federal level. In the British system
the royal power was slowly tamed and brought into line with the public will. The Americans have never gone through
that. Somehow they made their system work for over two centuries, but the present denouement is to be expected.
It is strange that after fulminating for so long about royal power they are now subjugated to an Emperor; and a capricious
    one at that.

  4. The problem goes deeper than obvious. The Border invasion has been financed and organized by US religious Angelical zealots. The Jimmy & Tammy-Fay Baker type of religious corruption that the MSM will never cover. The trek through Mexico (rest Stations) are never explained. Drug lords don’t engage in humanitarian projects.
Republicans have a conflict of interest (religion & family values) that allows Obama to take advantage of them. If you watch the dance of responsible representation in Congress one could hope they would at least agree on some principles.
No Government Money for Immigration Lawyers & Judges, especially in the Ninth Circuit that has blocked border security
No Government money for dubious religious organizations that are playing a role in the invasion.
Carl Rove wants money for all those parties. Why?

  5. The “Republic” of the USA is just following the natural course of all republics. But hey,we got food stamps and Obozo phones for all the kids! Think of the children, who are actually the last thing they are thinking of…..one word….VOTES.

  6. Gee, I have no problem with Angelical zealots! I kind of like Michael, Gabriel and
all of da by’s. I do have trouble with the diabolical ones though. Now that I think
of it, a Dem would probably call diabolical zealots “Karl Roves” not to mention
“George Bushes!” In fact in the Black Pantheon of my friend Roger from Pennsylvania
(who may be losing it) Karl Rove is at the apex, the Bad Eminence, then George Bush,
then Condoleeza Rice, and somehow Joe Paterno and Hillary Clinton figure in
there too. Roger’s BDS really has gotten out of hand.

  7. Douthat seems to be appealing to a nonexistent ethic among the media. The people he has asked to awaken to Obama’s imperial designs, are best described by Mark Steyn as Obama’s very own Court Eunuchs. Nothing coming out of this Administration in the form of executive fiat will surprise me. Even if the Evil Party loses the Senate, Obama will go for it full-on, daring the Stupid Party to impeach him. The Stupid Party still cows at the hint of bad (worse) press.

“Better to live under one tyrant a thousand miles away, than a thousand tyrants one mile away.”
    – Daniel Bliss
And poor old George III was no real tyrant at all, notwithstanding American national mythology.

  9. One advantage, most overlook with Canada/UK’s Westminster system is that because the Prime Minister is not Head of State, he/she can never be a Nixon or worse an Obama.
However the US Constitution has an expedient means to deal with Obama’s over-reach…The Second Ammendment…the Federlist Papers indicate the framers especially Madison and Jefferson anticipated this.
“From time to time, the Tree of Liberty……”

  10. Before it devolves to watering the tree of liberty, Americans would be wise to exercise the true power of the purse next April 15th.

  11. “…Americans would be wise to exercise the true power of the purse next April 15th”
Americans would be wise to march on Washington and shut it down until this administration resigns.

  12. I disagree. Obama sent two La Raza people to be ambassadors in two central American countries. I don’t hear the US govt. or those ambassadors telling people not to do it.
This is a deliberate Fed govt. policy to bring in more undocumented Democrats to “fundamentally transform” America into a third-world despotism. Currently it is succeeding, but the will be trouble yet.
The Roman Republic didn’t end peacefully, but after decades of machinations. Julius Caesar was originally perceived as a Savior from civil war, and Augustus carefully kept the trappings of the Republic, while all the Senators pretended not to see the Imperial structures.

  13. No one is hungry enough for that right now.
Wait until they’ve had a good solid famine and maybe a nice plague go through. Then the marching will begin.
The way things are progressing down there, probably by 2016. Barry is working as hard as he can on the plague part.

  14. Sasquatch,
“One advantage, most overlook with Canada/UK’s Westminster system is that because the Prime Minister is not Head of State, he/she can never be a Nixon or worse an Obama.”
The disadvantage, of course, is that all the gains of one administration under a Parliamentary system can be completely wiped out by the next Parliament. The American system was supposed to (and did for over two hundred years) provide some stability because neither the executive or the legislative branches had the power to make drastic changes. Until recently all parties abided by this agreement and when they tried to stray (eg Nixon) public pressure and an understanding of the reality of the strengths of the system sent them packing. All Presidents have pushed the limits to some extent in some areas but Obama is different in that he has a compliant media and a party structure which has, over the past twenty or thirty years, developed a sense of power entitlement. It is not politically feasible to impeach Obama with the current Senate as it would go nowhere and the compliant media would spin it against the opposition. We are stuck, therefore, with an emperor, at least until a Republican wins the Presidency, at which point the candidate will likely still have at least some sense of executive limits, and the media will become the “non-partisan” watchdogs that they used to be all the time.

  15. Since the Federal government has been locked in this dance for 30 years.Let Americans as a people decide this issue. Maybe its time for a Nation wide binding referendum on immigration. That or State by State voting that is free of Judicial interference. In other words create a Bill of rights amendment on immigration.

  16. If’n they march…..armed or not…Obama/Jarrett will sic all the Fed agency swat squads on them, accusing them of armed insurrection anyhoo and the survivors will all end up in FEMA camps…….
    Tain’t right, tain’t wrong, just is……..

  17. “The disadvantage, of course, is that all the gains of one administration under a Parliamentary system can be completely wiped out by the next Parliament.”
This is exactly what will happen if Shiny Pony becomes prime minister. The Wheat Board and the firearms registry will come back, and as well, many law and order bills, as well as other bills, will be reversed.
In the US, the opposition is in total disarray, and seem not to have either the stomach or the will to fight the naked power grabs. He warned the people about what he would do.

  18. I’m fearful you are spot on Ken. Turdeau wants to do to Canada what
Obama has done to the USA and what McGuinty and Wynne have done to
Ontario. Anyone contemplating voting lieberal because they are tired
of Harper should give serious thought to the ramifications of doing so.

  19. “Anyone contemplating voting lieberal because they are tired
of Harper should give serious thought to the ramifications of doing so.”
To be even contemplating voting liberal is prima facia evidence they are incapable of any thought, let alone serious.
