Very interesting but it might be more useful to show how one’s pot would look without genetic manipulation. I can assure you, in that case, there will be no going back.
Selective breeding is not the process used to produce GMOs. In the latter case DNA from unrelated species (even animals) is artificially introduced into the DNA of a plant.
If companies like Monsanto are 100% sure GMOs are safe, why are they fighting tooth and nail against GMO labeling? Case in point, the recent lawsuit against Vermont.
Also, I find it interesting that most AGW skeptics seem to think GMOs are safe. If Big Green can buy climate scientists, you can bet Big Ag does it too.
Where can I get these heritage plants? What passes for fruit these days are sacks of sugar. Little wonder we have obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s epidemics.
Big Ag has a productive mission, Big Green has a destructive mission.
I think you’ll find that’s the major difference between the 2.
I’m willing to give monsanto more leeway because they:
1. Don’t want to lose their company by being sued.
2. Have developed or helped develop technology that’s currently keeping hundreds of millions of people from starving today.
I’m not willing to give Dr. Mann the same leeway because:
1. He has deliberatly lied about the validity of his work, not for societal gain, but for personal gain.
2. He is actively trying to prevent those in the underdeveloped world from having the quality of life that he, and I have.
Hopefully this has been informative.
Well said Jon.
1. Don’t want to lose their company by being sued.
Heh, I guess Enron didn’t either…
Anyway, it’s a wonder we survived prior to their ability to put mouse genes
In plants.
“… it’s a wonder we survived prior…”
The death rate for our species has always been 100%. The variability is in how long each individual gets to delay their death, and thus whether a larger or smaller number survive long enough to breed, increasing the population. Assuming the longer lives in prosperity that lead to increased population are considered a good thing, genetic modification of food sources to extend survival rates is indeed a wonderful thing. There is still plenty of freedom for individuals who don’t like it to constrain their own lives to hardship and to die young, but for so many that isn’t enough, they insist on having the freedom to impose that on others who don’t want it.
Re: yellow rice
Gee, didn’t realize there was a shortage of Chinamen…
(Very) simply put: they don’t put “mouse” genes in plants, because there is no “mouse” gene. All life on earth is comprised of four nucleic acid bases that make up DNA. all that differs is the order they’re arranged in.
Viruses do more cross species gene swapping every day than man will ever accomplish in our lifetimes.
…but for so many that isn’t enough, they insist on having the freedom to impose that on others who don’t want it.
I know, you wouldn’t think labelling would be that big a concern …
Viruses do more cross species gene swapping every day than man will ever accomplish in our lifetimes.
Probably a lesson there…
Thanks for a great link, Kate. It’s side by side with junkscience.com in my favorites bar.
I would add:
3. Monsanto, et al, do not want to kill paying customers.
Not wanting to kill people doesn’t seem to prevent it from happening quite a bit.
crude oil is completely organic.
Hmmmmmm……..how many people have died from ecoli that they got from eating over-priced “organic” vegetables that seem to have little or no regulations on how they are fertilized, grown, and marketed to customers? Meanwhile, the megalomaniacal left wants oppressive controls places on GMO foods that so far have killed no one and kept millions of people fed and healthy. If given a choice i’d rather eat GMO food grown on a real farm rather than wilted, pathetic crap grown by a hipster on his craft farm on a rooftop in some urban area.
GMO labeling is using the state to scare away potential customers through coerced and imbalanced information. How many customers could cite the number of carcinogens in a cup of organic coffee? Or numbers of toxins in organic broccoli, potatoes or carrots. Shouldn’t these be labeled as well? Shouldn’t every package of all food have an attached booklet or CD of full toxicological information. Or, maybe the state should simply predigest all that is good and regurgitate “safe” green pablum for the safety of all consumers and particularly the good of the children with whomever winning elections getting to decide the winners like all other statist endeavors.
Rather than continue outsourcing all remaining adult responsibilities to the state, leave consumers free to chose in a market where the theology of organic food is free to compete with their own accompanying scripture. Whole Foods has certainly found a market of willing (and obviously wealthy) buyers.
Or, maybe the state should simply predigest all that is good and regurgitate “safe” green pablum for the safety of all consumers…
Heh, probably wouldn’t be any more tasteless than the strawberries and some of the other crap they grow nowadays.
If you’ve ever eaten wild strawberries and raspberries, or other wild berries, you wouldn’t give the crap in the store a second glance. GMO, or otherwise. Looks pretty, but not much in it.
Since the advent of gmo it’s only gotten more tasteless.

You have that choice; go right ahead and do what you think is best for you. Most of us don’t limit our choices to those two extremes.
I will continue to grow organic food and buy high quality organic food from local farmers. Organic foods are consistently tested to find significantly less pesticide, herbicide and other ag-chem residues. Some people prefer not to eat those contaminants; that’s why we have free market choices.
There are a lot of people who would rather eat clean food grown and raised naturally as it would have been on a family farm fifty to a hundred years ago, without the use of antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides and genetically engineered seeds. They don’t want cheap junk food, they want good quality food without ag-chem additives, and they’re willing to pay a fair and reasonable price for it. They want the meat they eat to be raised on clean unadulterated feed, in humane living conditions, then harvested humanely, and processed cleanly. This market is growing rapidly, and unfortunately opportunities for deceit and scams abound.
Governments should provide standards and regulations with inspections and enforcement to ensure truthful advertising and product labeling. Labels on foods should state specific ingredients and their country of origin. If a product is labelled “Organic” or “GMO-Free”, then there should be recognized standards and a process to get certification, with inspections to ensure compliance.
Governments should not manipulate the market with subsidies, price controls or standards that give preferential treatment to some producers.
Give consumers the information they need to make intelligent informed decisions, then let them decide for themselves.
So-called organic growers swear affidavits that enable them to pass off their produce as ‘organic’ because there is no other way to distinquish this stuff from regular produce. That is one of the reasons why farmers are opposed to GMO labeling. We already have unethical claims made by burger joints that their meat contains ‘no additional hormones’. Kate has shown with links that their claims are nothing more than hogwash.

Don’t believe everything you think.
What part of ” Organic foods are consistently tested to find significantly less pesticide, herbicide and other ag-chem residues. ”
was difficult for you to grasp?
The one link to a biased blog about no additional hormones in A&W burgers proved nothing of the sort that you claim, as the discussion that followed showed conclusively. Pay attention, details are important, read the info at the links posted to understand the issues.
We can lead people to knowledge but we can’t make them think, especially when they’re blinded by their preconceived notions.
” Organic foods are consistently tested to find significantly less pesticide, herbicide and other ag-chem residues. ”
I duly note the subjective, vague, and unscientific wording of that sentence(significantly less by what measure and in whose opinion?) and would place the ‘no additional hormone’ advertisements in the same category. Oh wait there is a grand total of 2 less hormones in the meat in question. What’s that old saying about suckers?
“Organic foods have only been consistently tested for bacteria contamination and found to be hazardous….
Organic food is easily recognized…it is the wrinkled thing with the hair on it.
Want non-GMO wheat?….eat grass….
yup, that proves my point nicely.
Thanks, and have yourself a nice day now, ya hear.
If my days were only ‘nice’ I’d throw in the towel; every day for me is a great day.
When a company uses as their ad campaign the theme that their meat contains less hormone without telling you the whole story about hormones they need to be called out on it or when a company uses dodgy claims about their ‘organic’ produce being of a superior nature when in fact it’s the same damn thing they need to be called out.

bullfudge. there is nothing incorrect in what the A&W ad states go look for yourself, and stop regurgitating unsubstantiated misinformation you read off some blog.
Well go look for yourself. I just saw the ad in their window; “NO ADDITIONAL HORMONES”
In other words the meat at the competitors place has additional hormones but ours doesn’t and where I was taught English that directly implies less. In my book thats suckers bait but you seem fine with it so knock yourself out. Eat the burger with the 2 less hormones.
