A sophisticated network of metal thieves has targeted some 20 French wind turbines in a new looting trend, scaling the near 40-metre-high structures and stealing up to one tonne of metal from a single engine, Le Figaro reported Wednesday.
Citing an anonymous police source, the daily newspaper said the ring stole metal from wind farms in sparsely populated areas, where they had less chance of being caught.
Eh. Aren’t they all?

Eh. Aren’t they all? Kate
Haven’t seen one in downtown Edmonton yet. Maybe the thieves got them all ready?
With copper at $4500 Eurobucks per ton,one ton per birdmill, this was inevitable.
Solution: hire guards, not untrustworthy private contractors, but unionized government employees to watch the eggbeaters 24/7/365.
You can’t have too many government employees.
Almost reminds one of Robin Hood, it does.
Those bird slicers must be a real boon for copper thieves…almost no chance of being electrocuted…
So now we know what Kate really does on those kennel trips. Playing Don Quixote with windmills and picking up some spare change to boot.
$3.10 a pound for copper today.
It’s not theft, it’s premature recycling.
“….“They cut the power to turn off the engine propeller motor,”
And that turned the wind off …..
Maybe they were just tired of all the shredded birds falling on their houses.
Interesting, I should ask some of my friends in the local police services here in SW-Ontario if they’ve seen any of this yet. $20 says it’s not even on their radar, and haven’t even heard about it.
Now that this story is out metal thieves will be everywhere now.
Naive environmentalists never include the human factor in their fancy plans.
“Naive environmentalists never include the human factor in their fancy plans.”
Isn’t that the truth. The Enviroleft in the SF Bay Area had a fantastic plan to reduce the amount of waste in landfills: Raise the price to about $50 a pickup truck full. The result is that people are driving up in the hills and dumping stuff off the sides of the road. Much better to have old matresses in the canyons than in landfills.
They installed video cameras for security, how are they powering them?
Al, $3.15 2 weeks ago, $3.00 today:-))))
What action figures would be concerned about flying animals being shredded?
Why Batman and Robin top the suspect list, of course.
