Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Ouch, that smarts! And it finished the race?
Another look at the injury. Incredible horse.
http://msn.foxsports.com/horse-racing/story/california-chrome-sustains-gash-to-foot-060714
That is too bad. I was disappointed. Misfortune happens.
The injury had nothing to do with the result of the race.
The Belmont is a very different race than the Preakness and the derby – far longer the those two. Chrome was not built for that length and that coupled with really hot humid conditions revealed him to be outclassed in this class of race.
CC is a fine horse but not in the league of triple crown winners like secretariat and seattle slew. There have only been eleven winners in 146 years – the toughest test in horse racing and one of the toughest in all of sport.
I disagree gord,I don’t think you should be able to run a horse at Belmont if it has not run the other 2. It’s just not fair to the other horses shooting for the triple crown.
Paul, this fellow and many others agree with you.

And I don’t think they should change the rules in their desperation to have a Triple Crown winner so as too drum up interest in a dying sport. If the nasal strips are not performance enhancing, then why is he wearing them?
He came within a hair of being permanently crippled coming out of the gate. The three horse’s hoof scraped down the tendon before tearing off the corner of his hoof. California Chrome ran a mile and a half in pain, his third grade 1 race in 5 weeks, was forced wide on the final turn, – and still finished only 2 lengths off the winner.
What Kate said.
Exactly.
We raise jumper horses and there is no question that running 3 races in 5 weeks takes a lot out of a horse. So its not a level playing field. We don’t even start to jump them until they are 4 and these horses are flat out as 2 and 3 year olds. Its not only the fatigue but there are minor injuries that have to be dealt with as well. A horse that comes in fresh has a definite advantage over one that has run the other 2 races. The establisment would have screamed bloody murder had the owners of CC said “naw, were not gonna run the Belmont Were happy with the KD and the Preakness”
Has anyone noticed that the “fresh” horses being raced in the Belmont Stakes are not eligible to win the Triple Crown? They may win the race, and thus prevent a Triple Crown from occurring, but they themselves are not in contention for that honour.
The Triple Crown is a Big Deal because it is so tough to win. As it should be.
It’s getting tougher all the time, Gord. The Belmont fields are much larger than before, as the prize money is drawing them in. Secretariat had only 4 horses to contend with – put him in a 12 horse field and a slow start may have found him jammed into the rail or forced 5 wide through the final turn.
The New York horsemen will do whatever it takes to keep a Cali trainer from winning a Triple Crown. They have been bringing out runners pointed for the Belmont for years. And observe the way they chased I’ll Have Another out of town.
I’ll bet that plumber wishes he’d just kept his mouth shut. What a moron. I was with him until then. It’s preposterous to suggest the Triple Crown races should be changed. His jock screwed the pooch, that’s all.
Chrome is a hell of a colt. I hope to see him at the Breeder’s Cup. It’s back at Santa Anita. Let the colt do the talking, you ungrateful fool.
Did you catch the owners wife during his rant? That look would give a grizzly pause.
I bet CC would have won had he not been injured. How ever to be allowed to just enter a perfect horse that is well rested just to topple the triple crown attempt is retarded and probly why the sport is dying,30 years? Seriously how much tougher do you want it to be, Kate even said the tracks are bigger, more horses,it’s rediculous I say in order to run at Belmont you must make the cuts of KD&Preakness if you run those then you can run the Belmont. If not than you can’t just run a perfect horse that is well rested Ect Ect it’s stupid and why young ppl are not interested. Talk about cherry picking.CC desereved that win, and I bet the 3 horse jockey was paid to do that rear up his horse and do something to CC right out of the gate. Change the rules maybe you will get a winner every 5-10 years instead that is a very tough feat to pull off on its own
To reduce the chance of induced pulmonary hemorrhage, or EIPH, which can be prevalent in horses in strenuous activity. Speed horses tend to have this result. If the strips were truly performance enhancing, all of the horses would be wearing them.
That said, based upon my life with horses, I must say I find thoroughbred racing an abomination because of the young age the horses are started. Many breakdown before ever being noticed. What you see at events like the Derby et al are outliers, and even then they can breakdown right in front of you on national television.
Finally, by not requiring Derby Qualification and participation in all three races, the purported “Triple Crown” is like a marathon won by a guy who hopped off a bus at mile 20 and wins the race.
The rules were the same when secretariat ran. No need to change them now. In some ways it harder now, in others it’s not – there are far fewer tracks and horses now than when secretariat ran for example.
No doubt CC was/is a fine horse, and there are lots of fine horses who won two out of three.
Larger tracks now, and more horses now, I believe there was 8 in this race. Secretariats was against 6 on a shorter track. Change the rules make it fair. If not that then at least change them to piss Gord Tulk off.
CC was sabotaged and was used as an example by the rich racing industry owners as an example of what happens to underdogs , and gord Tulk fully supports that.
AIRDOG you are absolutely right, it’s ridiculous to be able to do that. Poor CC!!
Hope he comes back and wins it all again!!
