  1. I wonder how much tax payers’ money was received for this, probably in the form of grants. Having raised, lived with and worked with animals all my life I can confirm that all of them are sensitive to the tone of one’s voice and of course body language. Actually it is much the same with wild animals. However I received no government grant nor took any special university class to learn this. This is exactly why government grants for all this ridiculous stuff should cease. In fact I suggest complete termination of all government grants for anything and everything. If it is serious research which will produce beneficial results for society, private funding will appear.

  2. My black Labrador used to crawl into his crate every time somebody swore.

  3. yup Alain, just ask one of us who has been around animals all our life. The other thing is that dogs “key” on, is smell, and humans scent changes with mood, health, and diet. Dogs can “smell” fear.
And love the subject matter in that article:-)))

  4. First time dog owner. I’m 50. Do dogs feel guilty? There are MANY occasions Chester folds his tail, droops his ears, eyes and mouth… slinks off with head bowed… I start looking for what he’s been up to.
I always find it. A scoldable offense.
Yet I’ve had no previous inkling to alter my behaviour (to anger) of his actions.
Ahhhhhhhhhh a guilt trip with airmiles!

  5. Dogs have long been an emotional mirror and reflect what their owners are thinking or feeling, even if the owners themselves don’t know it. I evaluate dogs and owners as teams and if the owner is relaxing and having fun, so will the dog – and vice versa.
Of more interest to me is the apparent telepathy when my two dogs both react when only one of them actually sees something, even if they are not in sight of each other. I’ve witnessed it enough times to know they have something going that we mere humans are not tuned in to.

  6. Our previous dog was not to go into the living room or climb up on the beds. Quite often when we came home she would have a sheepish look on her face when she would great us at the door. Inevitably we would find some hair on the bedspread or on the couch.
The collie we have now somehow seems to know when she is about to receive some medication. As the article suggests, I think she knows from our tone of voice when we call her, and thinks, “Oh,Oh, crappy tasting medicine coming my way”.

  7. jeff, my jackassrussel cross will sometimes hide around a corner or go to his “crate” when he’s pulled a NoNo. I use his crate for “time outs”, I don’t even close the door. Yup, dogs are only as stupid as their owners:-))))

  8. Half the dogs in that photo at the link are smarter than the people studying them.
We read an article in the Veterinary column of the local Paper a few years back that stated if your dog yipped and yelped in his sleep, accompanied by running motions of his paws, he was suffering a mild seizure, and should be rushed to the Vet.
Every dog I’ve ever owned suffered these seizures, none went to the Vet when they awoke, and all lived long happy lives. I assume the writer was trolling for business, and no, it wasn’t an April 1 column.
I could write a book on the love and empathy some of my dogs have had for our children, and with our current and probably last dog,a 14 year old Border collie, you don’t have to say anything, just a look at her tells her how you’re feeling.
Now,she’s getting forgetful and seems confused at times, just like us. It’s tough watching an animal you love grow old, just as it is with friends and family in the same situation.
As Will Rogers said,”if there are no dogs in Heaven,I want to go to where they go”.

  9. Right so my Rhodesian who can hear a cheerio hit the floor of the kitchen from a deep sleep and 2 floors away is senstive to my tone of voice… Who could have imagined that?
You’d swear some animal scientists were raised on some planet with no animals

  10. I recall some fool asked Pope Emiritus Benedict if dogs went to heaven…..
He responded of course…then quoted Will Rogers….Panzer Pope indeed….

  11. Our faithful dog of 16 years just passed last month. Sasquatch, I loved the Will
    Rogers quote.
My wife absolutely swears that our dog could hear me coming home from a quarter mile away. As soon as my pickup crossed the railroad track about a 1/4 mile away from the house his head would come up and ears pointed.
He was my dog, my buddy and I miss him dearly.

  12. You should see the reaction of my retired show dogs when I begin loading the truck – without them. They don’t just understand tone of voice or what our patterns of behavior signal about future events, they’re truly upset when they realize they’re not going.
