Honda Motors will suspend plans to build an electric vehicle plant in Canada after slow U.S. demand pushed the Japanese automaker “to put hybrids at the centre of its North American strategy,” Nikkei Asia reported on Tuesday.
CTV News reached out to Industry Minister Melanie Joly for comment on the report, to which her office said the global automotive sector is experiencing “significant change.”
“American tariffs and changes to U.S. domestic policies are creating real pressures for automakers, prompting some to delay or scale back investments in electric vehicle and battery projects,” the office of the minister said in a response.
The plant, which Honda had expected to invest a total of $15 billion into, was slated to begin operating as early as 2028.
“Real central planning has never been tried”.
I think Canada’s auto industry is in far worse condition than just this one assembly plant.
To whom will the industry sell vehicles if the USA pulls the plug on the free trade negotiations next month? Toyota and Honda may move all their production to the USA then?
and as an aside, F1 is looking at the return of gasoline powered V8 engines with minimal electric power in a couple of years as their current central planning formula has reduced F1 to something far different from what was intended, Honda especially has dropped the ball on that file but it’s best to never count them out in racing.

In the 1980s there was a Cape Breton Investment Tax Credit of 60% ((I remember it as 70%). Build a new plant and the federal government would partially refund and partially reduce taxes to a total of 60% of the cost of investment. It looked like a great opportunity but Cape Breton had the reputation of being a shithole for investment and it wouldn’t be proven wrong. How the process went was open new plant, hire local workers, workers go on strike, plant shuts down. My father told me you can’t get something for nothing. The old bugger might have been right.

With these electric vehicles, I think it is wrong to point out the dangers of them blowing up, or bursting into flames, or electrocuting people in a plasma event. You should think about the hard working electricians who install recharging stations, or insurance agents who have to hand over settlement checks to grieving men whose cheating spouse has been crisped in a plasma event. Or insurance agents who have to moonlight as un-documented electricians to make a living. Or electricians who have to moonlight as un-documented insurance agents. Just think of the people left behind, with nothing to console them but a few hundred thousand dollars. So talk to your un-documented insurance professional, otherwise, just smile and don’t complain.
