Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Control of the organic food industry is close to non-existent. At best, my guess is that organic is a label with an adhesive backing and not much more.
When I was growing up, our cattle used to whiz in the creek just upstream from a water-treatment plant. Our feedlot also drained into said creek. I still drank the water.
I think the draining of the reservoir had nothing to do with science. It’s something I’ve noticed and for quite a few years, it happens in Canada too. The ‘authorities’ observe a minor offense, someone doing something stupid, and they call out all the fire trucks and swat teams and generally do everything they can to expand the offense and make it as costly as possible. Then, when it goes before a judge, the offense seems far worse than it actually was.
This is definitely a first world problem. Most of the world still worries about getting enough to eat everyday. These mommies have too much time on their hands.
Portland is home to the looniest of the loonie left but here they have exceeded themselves. ‘Stupid’ paid in full courtesy of the taxpaying citizens of that beautiful area.
$2.69 / lb for apples? That’s great.
“The CFIA took over regulation of the organic sector in 2009 but failed to include testing (U.S. organic standard has a testing clause, but it’s not enforced)
Organic goods are certified for sale in Canada based only on paperwork (Same as in the U.S.)
The CFIA lacks any meaningful definition of organic (U.S. has a better definition, but again, no testing)”
http://www.isitorganic.ca/popoff_and_dr_moore
there’s more here…
Just more leftard control by power-junkies.I wonder if I started packaging everybody’s s@@t,listed the ingredients as all natural and 100% recycled,(which it is) and started calling it an “organic supplement” just how much I could make? Hey. Don’t fight idiocy, use it to your advantage!
It’s a symptom of city dwellers not knowing or being exposed to modern farming. Though I live in the city now, I grew up on a farm, helped my dad plant, spray and harvest the crops. I know pesticides are dangerous (if drank from the jug) but are used safely by our farmers. Though organic eaters are a great way to profile anyone you don’t want to talk with or associate with. Easy way to see who is stupid and crazy.
Not sure why anyone would want to make “mommy friends” with people who would lie to their 3 year old about Jif peanut butter.
Idiots. Piss be upon them.
If it has a green label and costs significantly more, it must be
organic.
Recent tests in Canada found about 40% of organic products from grocery contained pesticides or fertilizers. Turned out Canada doesn’t even have a hard definition of the term. Into the void inevitably steps the unscrupulous promoter, along with the gullible consumer.
I always make a point of asking for the unorganic product, to the consternation of sales clerks.
Martin….I ask for the organic, then tell them I want the organic that hasn’t been overpriced that they sell to the stupid LIP’s so they can feel good about their worthless lives. When the inevitable look of confusion appears,I simply tell them ALL food is organic,(sometimes I mention basic GRII chem)I just don’t want the stuff raised in cow pies, full of E.coli and who knows what.It is a fun game. See what you are starting,Kate! :):)
I think of a man…
“Am I going to be an outcast?”
A better question is: Who in their right mind would WANT to be accepted by those greenie whackjobs? Find a different circle of friends.
I routinely have to suppress the urge to advise organic food fruitbats to add ground up peach pits to their breads and cereals “for the fibre”.
Problem is these “greenie whackjobs” have successfully promoted themselves as the “right people”…..they’ll tell ya so, ya don’ have ta ask….
The Brown Shirts back in the day did that too.
Same people different time………..IMHO.
It’s a revenge of the nerds situation.
When I first read this article I was astounded but not surprised. Just downstream from Oregon, California farmers are having to let their fields go fallow due to a water shortage, while Portland wastes 38 million gallons over a little urine.
I guess bureaucrats aren’t capable of doing the math, 12 ounces of piss divided by 38 million gallons of water = how many parts per million? They probably never think of it, but wild creatures undoubtedly dump a lot more pollutants into the reservoir, take just one flock of Canada geese for instance….
New recruiting poster for Al Qaeda: Jihadis, don’t bother f***ing around with dangerous explosives! If you want to bring down the Satanic Infidel Kingdom, just go whiz in their water reservoirs. Eventually all the infidels will starve to death.
Haa! So field mice don’t piss? Birds don’t void anywhere they please?
And don’t get me going on the filthy habits of fish.
@Justthinkin…..But your costs would skyrocket when you had to add ‘natural’ sugar to sweeten the taste. But, then again these ‘organics’ wouldn’t know the difference if it did taste like shiiit or semi-sweet chocolate.
Imagine if a bird were to fly over the resevoir and poop in it or something. Also regarding Mommy, do you really want to make friends with someone who would think less of you for feeding ‘non-organic’ food?
Pssst… I’ve heard that fish actually poop and reproduce in that reservoir. Euuck!
Of all the things I give 2 craps less about than 3-1/2
parts in 10,000 (CO2,) I find it hard to get my panties
in a wad over 1-1/2 cups of piss in 608 million cups
of drinking water.
You are forced to eat organic food against your will? That’s outrageous, how can that happen in a free and just society? You should be free to cram whatever crap food with contaminated ingredients made in China into your pie hole as often as you want. Your personal freedom to consume whatever food you choose should not be infringed.
But of course if someone chooses to eat organic that shouldn’t be allowed, right? All the tests show that organic foods had significantly less contaminants, so why should some people be allowed to buy cleaner food? Everyone should be forced to eat the same contaminated junk food, what place does freedom of choice have in a globalized society?
Those people who state that they won’t ever buy organic foods seem just as smug as the people who only buy organic.
Drought-stricken Wichita Falls is ready to become the first U.S. city to drink its own toilet water. The Texas city of more than 104,000, suffering the worst drought on record, is about to become the first place in the U.S. to treat sewage and pump it directly back to residents.

“Drought-stricken Wichita Falls is ready to become the first U.S. city to drink its own toilet water.”
Friend, we’ve been drinking our own toilet water since man first appeared on the planet.
Or do these eco-types think all the water on Earth is “brand new” and can only be used once?
Regarding the reservoir, my first thought was “I wonder if they know where the ducks go doody?”
The problem is paying extra for “organic” food, when Canada doesn’t even have a clear definition of what the term means. Looking at a bin of lentils, how is one to be assured the organicones are any freer from pesticides than the regular ones? I have no faith in people not to jump on the green bandwagon and raise the price accordingly. The other thing one might ask, is if there are no pesticides or fertilizers involved, shouldn’t the produce be cheaper?
The story of up to 40% of organic produce not being chemical free, came from a post media story 2 months ago.
read slowly and carefully for comprehension, or you will miss important facts like “the first place in the U.S. to treat sewage and pump it directly back to residents.”
Got it now?
“The problem is paying extra for “organic” food”
Then don’t buy any. Is someone forcing you to buy organic? Why should you care what others eat?
The same study that found that organic food wasn’t completely free of trace amounts of pesticides also stated that all organic food tested had significantly less pesticide residue then non organic. Details are important for full comprehension of issues.
Nof60 said: “All the tests show that organic foods had significantly less contaminants, so why should some people be allowed to buy cleaner food?”
Uhm… except for the tests that showed much higher levels of bacterial and other contamination on “organic” produce than “regular” produce. Like metals, ferinstance.
Its not cleaner. Its a SNOW JOB, and they got you hook, line and sinker. “Organic” is a sticker you get to slap on your produce if you pay off the right people. Like, with money.
It may be true that what you grow yourself is nicer, cleaner and tastier than the “factory farm” produce you get at the supermarket, but then it will ALSO be better than the “organic” produce at the supermarket.
As to contaminated Chinese precursors and food products entering the country, yes they do. Absolutely. And they get used in the health food industry and the supplement industry just the same as in the “regular” food industry. There are some components of certain vitamin supplements that are no longer made in North America, and the only -economical- source is China. This is mostly due to insanely costly food and drug manufacturing regulations in North America and the complete lack of any regulation at all in China.
“Insanely costly” means it cannot be produced in America from locally grown feedstocks for less than four times the cost of what the Chicoms charge for finished product dropped on the dock in LA. Made from American feedstocks, generally. That’s two trips across the ocean, not one.
Can you say “Special Deal”?
On the flip side I understand Kellogg’s cereals are immensely popular in China. Chinese parents buy Kellogg’s and other American company’s goods because they know it won’t have lead and melamine in it.
“Organic” is Latin for “grown in pig sh1t”.” Indeed. Its also Swahili for “Sucker!”
xcept for the tests that showed much higher levels of bacterial and other contamination on “organic” produce than “regular” produce. Like metals, ferinstance.
Got any proof for that opinion? Lets see a link to your test results.
As the blurb for this book says, the origins of the organic movement were the Fascist, nazi and associated groups.
http://www.amazon.com/Origins-Organic-Movement-Philip-Conford/dp/0863153364
And the far left bought into it. Is it wrong for me to be so amused?
You first.
North 60
Merely having a bit of fun with organic issue , as headline implied. Sorry to upset your sensibilities, of course I will buy, eat what I want and you can do the same.
The jest of the story, definitely not funny, is that people were being pressured to eat so called organic food by their peers, not the other way around.
The truth about organic food is that it a’int organic!
If it is “Mostly organic,” that is enough to qualify a
food as organic. Something to think about the next time
you go to Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s.
Also, so-called “Organic foods” are more likely to be
contaminated than non organic. In 2011, an E-Coli
outbreak from a small organic farm in Germany killed
53 people. Unlike pig-crap, organic fertilizers have
never been linked to any illnesses or deaths.
The same goes for chemical pesticides. DDT was the most
beneficial chemical produced by man.
Drinking water coming out of the tap does not directly enter the system from any reservoir, steam, lake or any other imaginable raw water source. It all goes through some form of treatment and disinfection with very stringent controls. These people need to get a life.

Probably from news stories and studies Kate linked to previously over the years among other things. I read these little snippets regularly. Google is your friend.
Contrary to what some people seem to think, I don’t have opinions and then rush out to find stuff that matches them. I read widely and form opinions from what I find. When the evidence changes, my opinion changes.
I used to think that all vitamin supplements were a waste of money. Now I think that -some- supplements are a waste of money. Because EVIDENCE.
So, if I see someplace that organic produce as presently marketed was tested properly, as in randomized controlled trials, and proved superior to regular produce, then maybe I’ll look into it.
However, to date the reverse is the standing evidence. Trials done so far of which I am aware show zero difference. When there’s zero difference, I shop price.
In other news, half the adult population think doctors make people sick on purpose so they won’t have to admit vitamins cure everything, and 10% think Elvis is still alive. You really can fool some of the people all of the time.
“The jest of the story, definitely not funny, is that people were being pressured to eat so called organic food by their peers, not the other way around. ”
Yes, that’s the crux of the issue. It’s not about ‘organic’ it’s about weak minded people. Of course that’s to be expected with the ‘i-whatever’ generation. Most of what they do is for all the wrong reasons. They were poorly educated and haven’t the intelligence or sensibility to research a subject and think for themselves. They mostly parrot what their Farcebook friends say. Their ‘foodie fad’ fetishes are very similar to their ‘climate change fad’ fetishes.
Organic is now passe’, it’s all about ‘gluten free’. Stupid Sheeple and their money are easily separated. The slick marketing business knows how to con people into spending money they don’t have on things they don’t need.
Right, so you admit you have no factual proof for your opinion “xcept for the tests that showed much higher levels of bacterial and other contamination on “organic” produce than “regular” produce. Like metals, ferinstance.”. Good that we’ve got that sorted. Of course you’re entitled to your beliefs and opinions just like anyone else.
Nobody forces you to eat organic foods, so be tolerant of other people’s beliefs and opinions as they are of yours.
I encourage stupid people to eat as much contaminated junk food as they can cram into their obese bodies. The sooner they die the less of a burden they are on the overused medical system.
Nof60 said: “Nobody forces you to eat organic foods, so be tolerant of other people’s beliefs and opinions as they are of yours.”
Hey, I’m not declaring Jihad dude. I’m not even talking about banning Smart Cars, miserable little mobile death traps though they may be.
But really, how much time do -you- have for people who believe Elvis is still alive?
Elvis who?
I don’t have time for most things that people believe in.
People who drive shoebox cars take the same risks as people who drive scooters and motorcycles. I couldn’t care less what people drive and don’t believe in bans on vehicle types. Let stupid people kill themselves sooner.
I always drive defensively, and people who drive into my vehicle will sustain far more damage than my truck will.
The reason that so-called organics are more likely to be
contaminated than traditionally farmed produce is that
large agra-businesses like Archer Daniels Midland
probably invests tens to hundreds of millions of dollars
yearly testing their products.
Any business that large can have their market share destroyed
by an E-Coli breakout. Just like the airlines, there is an
economic interest in keeping their product safe.
There are a lot of small organic “Boutique” farms specializing
in 100% organic foods. These small businesses are not regulated
anywhere near the same level as the big guys, so the pig crap
fertilizer and organic pesticides mean small breakouts of
food poisoning or E-Coli.
By abandoning chemical pesticides and fertilizers, we are
making outbreaks more common, but smaller, so long as only
small farms are doing the 100% organic method. ADM on the
other hand, may slap organic labels on their products, but
their products are safer, they have FDA inspectors on site!
Yes, Adolf Hitler was a vegetarian and – dare I say it? – an eco-Fascist.
When I see “organic” food from Mexico on the store shelves, I can’t help but wonder how anyone could trust the labelling.
I’m not an organic nut, but we live next to a cherry orchard, and my wife and I are constantly amazed at how many times over the summer the crop is sprayed with chemicals. I don’t even want to touch my neighbour’s cherries.
I couldn’t care less about organic, I think it is largely a gimmick. But I would pay money to know that a product I was buying was pesticide and chemical free. I couldn’t care if pesticides were used in producing it, but as a consumer I would like to know that it no longer contained anything harmful once it was on the shelf.
It is for this reason that I do not buy *any* produce from China, including garlic.
I think as consumers we are entitled to know what is in our food. “Organic” is of no help in that regard.
The article states “For some of them, feeding their families organic is a status symbol.” Yes indeed. See that all the time. I find many people in the middle/upper income class where we live are just carbon copies of each other. They drive the same cars, their kids are in the same activities, they do exactly the same (boring) things on the weekends, they all eat organic, they all believe in global warming, they all dress the same, their kids all have the same allergies (allergies are another modern status symbol), and so on and so on.
And if you are not one of the clones then you are frowned upon.
Luckily we have different friends.
I don’t eat anything from China; 90% of their water is considered contaminated by our standards.
I don’t eat anything from Mexico either, their regulations are inadequate and enforcement is sporadic at best. Mexico is a well known dumping ground for AgChem banned in the USofA.
I eat locally grown food as much as possible and I know which farmers grow the cleanest food.
Numerous studies have shown that organic labelled raw food from Canada and the US consistently has the lowest levels of pesticides and other AgChem contaminants. Some non-organic fruits and vegetables always test high in pesticide residue while others consistently test low. This data can be a useful guide to select which items to buy organic, and those which are relatively clean anyway.
Bio contaminants are a problem with all fresh produce. Pickers don’t have nice clean washrooms next to the fields. All produce should be washed, especially if eating raw food. Cooking kills most microorganisms like e-coli, a common contaminant in hamburger and some produce.
Eat whatever you want to. Only be concerned about what you eat if you enjoy being healthy rather than sick. The choice is yours.
