Politicians can’t protect citizens — taxpayers — from fiscal realities forever. If we want the services we get from government, we’ve got to pay for them. And if we truly worry about growing inequality, increasing the burden on the (comparatively) well paid is one important way to address it.
The problem is Hudak, and perhaps even more so his circle of advisers.
I cannot think of a less effective politician in an important position.
He may or may not have good policies, but he sure as hell isn’t selling, or trying to sell, anything. He comes across very poorly every time he opens his mouth. As a conservative in this province, I can say that he is invisible, his party is invisible, and there is a real chance that the Liberals will win again.
We can blame Ontario voters for being idiots, but if they are not given a credible choice, is the fault really with the voters?
I belong to both the the CPC and the Ontario PCs. The contrast is striking. The Ontario PC party communicates rarely or never with members, and seems to have no interest in engaging individuals (or even answering their communications).
It’s pathetic. It’s sad. I don’t understand it.

Ontario is compelled to follow the most indebted nation in the history of the planet into oblivion. The US likely has the most progressive tax structure where virtually half the nation votes for government that it doesn’t have to pay for. It’s what progressives do. It grows a permanent dependency class incapable of independence, thrift, and reason, while ensuring a vote for their government pushers.
Give Ontario a flat tax with a floating rate tied to balancing the budget and they might reconsider their priorities. The Spawn of Satan and “Dog Face” might not seem so appealing to the average Ontarian!

Spot on Lori. The Ontario PC as an organization are pathetic. I have joined them during the last leadership race just to vote for Randy, did not feel like renewing my membership. You are right they are invisible, true. But also incompetent even at the most basic organizational level. I tried to order a lawn sign during the last election. Filled out the form on their page (that looked like designed by a not especially bright 10 year old who just heard about HTML). It kept redirecting me to different pages every time I submitted the request. Finally fired an angry e-mail. Next day they delivered the sign (I was willing to pick it up myself and leave a donation while at it). Not even a word from them. No thank you, no nothing. A ghost dumped a sign on my lawn and disappeared. From then when they ask for donations I tell them that I made my donations to Randy Hillier, if they ask nicely maybe he will spare them some change.
My advice to Ontario conservatives. Get. The. Fawk. Out. Now. While you still can.

My problem with the PC party is not so much Hudak, its the candidates. When I checked the ballot last election I saw a liberal, a socialist, and a progressive….. something missing from that list of choices.
I also couldn’t help but notice the willingness of some of those candidates to heed advise given by pundits that will be looking out for the interests of down town Toronto and the OLP.

Please don’t continue to blame all Ontario voters for the Lieberals, blame the socialists in the large cities like Toronto and Ottawa. Rural Ontario voted solidly against the Lieberals. The cities are filled and growing with public union employees, welfare recipients and the intelligentsia of the chattering class. When I campaign for the Conservatives in my riding it is staggering to see the number of retired teachers, some of them my friends, that always, always will vote Liberal/NDP.

Paul Hudak is hated because he is inept, he is also hated because he abandons his promises. You mentioned his 180 on right to work laws. It is not the first time he has done something like that. During leadership race he promised to neuter “Human Rights” commissions that promise died shortly after he become a leader.

Vote, get a lawn sign, help campaigns if you can, but send money only directly to those candidates you believe in. Does not matter if they are at the other end of the province. And if your local candidate is a squishy progressive tell him why someone else got the money. Make sure they know.

Cannot be stressed enough, rural Ont massively voted Liberals out last time; look at any electoral map for confirmation.McWhynne retains exactly 1 rural seat, the GPR seat mentioned by Jamie. I am told local French language issues decided in favour of the Liberals.
That is the reality Toronto essentially is case by itself, having almost nothing in common with Ont outside the expressways. Unfortunately they have a lot of seats which the Liberals shamelessly cater to. Over 1200 wind turbines for rural Ont, 1 small demonstration windmill in TO.
However since Wynne has to split the TO and other urban seats with her NDP sidekick, it is doubtful either one of them can win a majority.
What say we start with the politicians? A 50% surtax sounds fair to me…
