  1. but how many had their transponders turned off then cont’d flying 4 hours after they “disappeared” while passengers cell phones con’t to ring & maintenance data pings were being sent to satellites?

  2. KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The Malaysian jetliner missing for more than a week had its communications deliberately disabled and its last signal came about 7 1/2 hours after takeoff, meaning it could have ended up as far as Kazakhstan or deep in the southern Indian Ocean, Malaysia’s leader said Saturday.
Najib said investigators now have a high degree of certainly that one of the plane’s communications systems – the Aircraft and Communications Addressing and Reporting System – was disabled before the aircraft reached the east coast of Malaysia. Shortly afterward, someone on board then switched off the aircraft’s transponder, which communicates with civilian air traffic controllers.
The prime minister then confirmed that Malaysian air force defense radar picked up traces of the plane turning back westward, crossing over Peninsular Malaysia into the northern stretches of the Strait of Malacca. Authorities previously had said this radar data could not be verified.
He then said the last confirmed signal between the plane and a satellite came at 8:11 a.m. Malaysian time – 7 hours and 31 minutes after takeoff. Airline officials have said the plane had enough fuel to fly for up to about eight hours.

  3. If the aircraft is to be used for some nefarious reason, it will have to be done soon, how can one hide a big aircraft like that for so long?

  4. One theory that crossed my mind, and I don’t hear many talking about, is what if a computer hacker was able to hack into the computers that run this modern aircraft and have their way with it. I don’t expect government or aircraft manufacturers would want to let us know that this is possible. Any way that’s my theory of the day.

  5. SEPANG, Malaysia — Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 experienced significant changes in altitude after it lost contact with ground control, and altered its course more than once as if still under the command of a pilot, American officials and others familiar with the investigation said Friday.
Radar signals recorded by the Malaysian military appeared to show that the missing airliner climbed to 45,000 feet, above the approved altitude limit for a Boeing 777-200, soon after it disappeared from civilian radar and turned sharply to the west, according to a preliminary assessment by a person familiar with the data.
The radar track, which the Malaysian government has not released but says it has provided to the United States and China, showed that the plane then descended unevenly to 23,000 feet, below normal cruising levels, as it approached the densely populated island of Penang.
There, officials believe, the plane turned from a southwest-bound course, climbed to a higher altitude and flew northwest over the Strait of Malacca toward the Indian Ocean.

  6. Westerners need to live and work in SEA to really appreciate the level of incompetence inherent in the region.
Never assume you’re getting the service or results you think you would in the west.

  7. It happened once before-
On October 25, 1999, a chartered Learjet 35 was scheduled to fly from Orlando, Florida to Dallas, Texas.
Early in the flight the aircraft, which was cruising at altitude on autopilot, quickly lost cabin pressure.
All on board were incapacitated due to hypoxia — a lack of oxygen.
The aircraft failed to make the westward turn toward Dallas over north Florida.
It continued flying over the southern and midwestern United States for almost four hours and 1,500 miles (2,400 km). The plane ran out of fuel and crashed into a field near Aberdeen, South Dakota after an uncontrolled descent.
The four passengers on board were golf star Payne Stewart, his agents, Van Ardan and Robert Fraley, and Bruce Borland,
a highly regarded golf architect with the Jack Nicklaus golf course design company.

  8. We have been witnessing an attempt by Malaysian authorities to cover-up a crime. I wonder what they call hijacking now? Hostile Change of Travel Destination?

  9. After the latest press conference apparently the Malaysian authorities searched the pilot’s home. I thought this was done days ago! And is it being searched by international police or just these people who obviously want to cover up things.

  10. NSA Spy on you agency knows where to find the plane,
But they continue to give us little clues like a Scavenger Hunt.
You are getting warmer, warmer, don’t go there and let it cool off,
    hotter, hotter..

    Serious question for experienced pilots?
Could a pilot on this jet, with this advanced technology,
still turn off the cabin pressure,
disable all the other crew and passengers?

  11. So 83 missing aircraft since 1948.
Just to put the significance of that statistic in perspective, there are anywhere from 70,000 to 90,000 (depending on your calculations) aircraft in the air worldwide every day.

  12. 83 missing aircraft-1948

1 plane out of every 262,800,000 flights in the last ten years.
I can’t get those odds with the MILLION DOLLAR MEGA LOTTERY..

  13. The disabling of the ACARS system and transponder can both be accomplished from the cockpit – as can the depressurization of the aircraft. Reports also indicate that communications equipment, dedicated to the initialization and sustainment of SATCOM datalink capabilities, was disabled some five hours after the aircraft became airborne – this would need to be accomplished by accessing an electronics equipment (E&E) bay underneath the galley area immediately behind, not in, the cockpit. We seem to have a situation where outside communications with Air Traffic Control agencies were systematically disabled from within the cockpit immediately prior to an unauthorized change of flight path followed some hours later by the disabling of all communications with the outside world. The first two communications events could be accomplished easily by trained flight crew but the last speaks to a knowledge that supersedes normal pilot training programs. Indeed, it likely speaks to the training received by a flight engineer or avionics technician. It also infers a requirement to subdue all within the aircraft cabin environment so that the E&E bay might be accessed.
It is interesting to note that things began to go off the rails shortly after level off at FL 350 while in the enroute phase of flight. This is normally the point at which flight deck activities settle down and passenger services begin. In line with this, it is not uncommon for the single, hardened cockpit door to open and close as requests for coffee and the need to take care of other, pilot biological needs are taken care of. Given the single door configuration of the vast majority of airliner jets, the pilot community has long sought to address the flight deck ingress/ egress vulnerability with “double-door” systems capable of securing the cockpit environment at all times – even during these flight deck ingress/ egress procedures. Of course, such systems could never address the commandeering of an aircraft cockpit by its own flight crew. They could, however, thwart attempts by a dedicated team of terrorists to take over the cockpit and the aircraft as a whole as might have been the case with MH 370.

  14. training received by a flight engineer or avionics technician.
It also infers a requirement to subdue all within the aircraft cabin environment so that the E&E bay might be accessed.
    thank you,

    now I think about this..
Capt. Zaharie set up a Boeing 777 simulator at his home in a suburb on the outskirts of the Malaysian capital,
Pictures posted by Zaharie on his Facebook page show the simulator with three computer monitors, a tangle of wires and several panels.
“He knew everything about the Boeing 777. Something significant would have had to happen for Zaharie and his plane to go missing.”

  15. If the aircraft was depressurized using the pressurization controller, how would the operator prevent the cabin oxygen masks from deploying.

  16. The rumour I heard was the player pilot liked to let pretty girls ride with him in the cabin, so insecure, prohibited since 9/11. IFF that’s so I have to wonder if the plane is on some obscure airfield being kitted out for a large jihadist attack.

  17. It is important to note that Malaysia has been ruled by a single party for decades and unrest has been coming to the surface lately. I get the feeling Malaysian politics play a huge role in this event.

  18. Those masks only last 15 minutes. The idea is to allow time for the pilots to descend below 10,000 ft where the air is breathable.

  19. I note that 1 missing aircraft is shown on the St. Lawrence between Kingston and Montreal…..rough country but not exactly the Kahani (sp) valley…..

  20. The difference between this disappearance and the others is that this was deliberately planned; and it appears the plan was executed. What that plan was we do not know.

  21. O2 masks will automatically deploy when the aircraft cabin altitude rises to approximately 13,500 feet. It normally trends in the 5000 – 7000 foot regime in the 777 during high level, long distance operations. There are two independent O2 systems on board the 777 along with a number of portable bottles located throughout the aircraft. The independent systems are dedicated to the flight crew and the passengers respectively.
The passenger system, given normal loads, will always be the long pole in the tent and time limits at altitude will be based on the pressure associated with this system. Suffice to say that flight crew can last longer on O2 than the passengers. Indeed, if passengers became troublesome the flight crew could fly the aircrfat up to higher altitudes to decrease the time available to passengers who would be starved of oxygen before the flight crew.
Information made availble to date, in the MH 370 instance, indicates that this might have been the case as the aircraft climbed above it’s clearance altiude to 45,000 feet shortly after communications were severed with air traffic control.

  22. Air forces better be ready to scramble fighters should any big jets appear from no-where. Somebody in central Asia or maybe east Africa has themselves a big cruise missile. Maybe Moscow? Chechen payback?

  23. I was wondering why the up tic in altitude, you may have just answered that. To “sedate” passengers, and they would be unaware of what was being done.

  24. most air travelers are gullible sheeple who wouldn’t realize there was a problem till it’s too late.
It’s looking more like a hijacking for the aircraft or pilot suicide. ‘Face saving’ is a big thing in Asian cultures. The fact that the plane descended to a low altitude over the home town of one of the pilots before turning west and climbing, is rather suspicious.

  25. The claim it went to 45,000 feet then descended 40,000 feet in 1 minute is ludicrous. But, certainly, the plane was flown to avoid radar.
I’d like to see what Diego Garcia looks like at present. Was this a “live target” or has the plane landed for future use, or for simple robbery of the cargo it carried. (Actually, grand theft is my first choice, my second choice is a direct attack on Diego Garcia.)

  26. One thing for sure. With no international law caused by Obama’s cowardice. The hate for the USA he holds , plus the fact no one will stand up to Islam. This will not be the last plane to vanish.

  27. Robert,
You’re right, a T7 couldn’t pull off that climb and recovery while stalling out close to coffin corner, but a Su-30MKM or Mig 29 could. (according to Wiki, the Malayssian air force has this equipment with radar jamming capabilities. )
I’m suggesting it was shadowed or intercepted. (only because I might want to write a stupid book about this incident later and make a buck off it. (insert depressing sigh here))
Every one in the press is throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks. It’s the worst disinformation campaign I can remember.
And the Malaysian PM gives out the statement on what “they” think happened, based on what, his military advisers?? As if they don’t have any skin in the game.
I don’t know what was on that aircraft or how much fuel was on board, and that info is not what is being released. And the Malaysian Gov’t sure as hell knows.
    It was headed to Beijing.
It had to fly over Vietnam to get there.
    It didn’t make it.(supposedly)
    Civilian ATC lost it.
Then, much later, the Malaysian military found it.
Then this convoluted story comes out about the most sophisticated act of navigation and deception carried out by a two man crew or pirates, selectively cutting communication, aircraft identity, subduing passengers, etc.
    To what end?
Nobody is screaming, look what we did!
Nobody is saying, look what we got!
A military op could keep the secret.
IF it was shot down, another aircraft could fly that distraction pattern.
IF it was directed or hijacked, ( using a military aircraft with radar jamming)why not to Vietnam or China, the two countries that could cover it up.
If something on that aircraft was that valuable to hijack it, ditching it in the middle of the Indian ocean is just stupid. It would break up. (it’s the ocean,,,not the Hudson river)
    239 lives as collateral damage?
So who wouldn’t care about that in that region.
Running with this story re the SATCOM pings from the aircraft while the ACARS was deliberately shut down is just insanity. It’s completely taken the search area out of any plausible hope of recovery.
I’m just not buying this stuff, but that’s just me.

  28. This is the corrupt muslim state of Malasia, absolutely anything is possible, given the players involved.
comments like Knight 99 @ 9:18 AM and TrueNorthist at 2:38 PM sum it up rather well.

  29. Police are investigating the possibility that the pilot of missing Flight MH370 hijacked his own aircraft in a bizarre political protest.
The Mail on Sunday has learned that Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah was an ‘obsessive’ supporter of Malaysia’s opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim. And hours before the doomed flight left Kuala Lumpur it is understood 53-year-old Shah attended a controversial trial in which Ibrahim was jailed for five years.
Campaigners say the politician, the key challenger to Malaysia’s ruling party, was the victim of a long-running smear campaign and had faced trumped-up charges.
Police sources have confirmed that Shah was a vocal political activist – and fear that the court decision left him profoundly upset. It was against this background that, seven hours later, he took control of a Boeing 777-200 bound for Beijing and carrying 238 passengers and crew.

  30. Then there’s the question of the unknown cargo that supposedly displaced 50 passengers, ie tickets not available for sale on the flight due to weigh restrictions….Assuming this is still believed to be true, as a straw man, I wonder if it is possible for the extra weight to have been fuel? Let’s say, for example, that the perpetrators paid for 50 passengers worth of cargo, and then had empty boxes loaded while adding the same weight in fuel. Is this possible and, if so, how much addition range might that fuel add to the flight?
    http://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/535538-malaysian-airlines-mh370-contact-lost-219.html

  31. N o 60,
Interesting theory. Assuming they could have got fuel loaded, at 400 pounds assumed per customer, weight plus baggage, maybe more. Then you get 20,000 pounds of fuel then divide that by 6.76 to get gallons….2958….lets call it 3000 gallons just to keep the math easy.
the fuel econmy on a 777 is 6.077 gallons per mile…..so an extra 3000 gallons gets you, in theory 493 miles. I would say thats about 45 minutes given thats the amount of time it takes to fly from Windsor to Toronto, which is around that distance.
Possible, expands the range of the aircraft by a bit.
I would be more concerned about what else might weigh 20,000 pounds….if you pursue that theory.
for the theory to be true they would have to have linked the extra fuel up to the fuel tanks….you think that would have been noticed.
Its a great movie plot. Consider it plausible in mythbuster parlance, but not sure what it gets you.
The plane has either crashed or is hidden somewhere. Until we find wreckage, or the plane it is just a huge puzzle.

  32. the 777-200 can fly from NY NY to Singapore with full load, non-stop. So 50 empty seats buys very little effect as to range. So one has to wander WTF was that “exercise” to accomplish?

  33. I have added a second theory to my list of possibilities. Namely that MH370 continued on course past IGARI @ 35k and at some point near the coast of Vietnam it was shot down by one of several nations claiming rights to the airspace above the South China Sea. What we have been subjected to is an elaborate cover-up to keep everyone looking elsewhere. The US took the extraordinary step of “leaking” intel when the Malaysians stumbled, then went so far as to send ships to the West to draw eyes away from the scene. By now any obvious evidence of the downing will have washed well out to sea with the current. Just a theory…
