Lovely, Lovely Guilt

At the Guardian, hands are for wringing:

The attempt to cultivate unrealism, dishonesty and pretentious guilt is a Guardian staple and gives the left’s national organ its distinctive tone. That tinny, unconvincing high-pitched whine. Affecting woe, especially improbable woe, is how many leftwing columnists signal their position in their own moral hierarchy, relative to you. Crudely summarised, it goes something like this: “I am better than you because I pretend to feel worse.”
See, for example, the tearful Theo Hobson, who tells us, emphatically, “There is no excuse for failing to feel liberal guilt about race and class.” Keen to self-emasculate, Mr Hobson also believes that James Bond films do “real harm to the male psyche” while making him feel “embarrassed” and “depressed.” Apparently, the hyperbolical adventures and physical daring of our fictional super-spy are “a big factor in the sexual malfunction of our times; the difficulty we have finding life-long partners, and the normalisation of pornography.”

  1. It is a wonderful sign of how rich we are that artificially created items like this can come to take so much time for “analysis”. If our lives weren’t so easy then she’d have real things to worry about, like “is that animal going to try to eat me?” or “is this safe to eat?” Instead of having real threats, her animal hindbrain “I must be fearful to stay alive” has her worrying about things that are beyond her control.
A benevolent religion could give her direction and purpose, but that’s probably too common of an approach for one such as her. And, even worse, it might allow someone else, somewhere else, to actually enjoy themselves. I suspect she hates that thought.

  2. Mr Hobson is just yet another in the increasing number of whining British pussies. He has no authority to talk about masculinity – he has no clue what it is.

  3. Theo Hobson,
    “the sexual malfunction of our times;
the difficulty we have finding life-long partners”

    Watch a lot of pornography,
    Don’t you?

  4. I think it is a vast mistake to keep identifying the neurotic/psychopathic creed who cloak their neurotic idealism under the guise of “progressivism/liberalism”. They are not progressive or liberal, for the most part they are dangerous neurotics who will foul up society as badly as they have fouled up their own consciousness. For the most part I see them as obsessed authoritarians who want to use the power of the mega-state to bludgeon anyone who differs from them or disagrees with them. Kind of like craven gangsters who want some contractor to do their “hits” for them.
Calling this lot “liberal” is engaging in the same intellectual dishonesty as political correctness has in subverting the meanings of words.

  5. As a white, male, Anglo-Saxon (I know, but I must confess!), I hereby apologize for all that any member of my kind—white, male, Anglo-Saxon—ever did to cause him and his kind to have more of anything than anyone else, and to all those who were thereby deprived and diminished by comparison. What were we thinking? Our intelligence, industry, determination, bravery, love of family and friends explain but do not excuse our crimes.
Whatever our contributions to civilization, we take it all back.

  6. I’ve never understood this need to go back generations looking for transgressions by our ancestors. For those who desire to be riddled with guilt, there is no need to look any further than today’s Catholic church. They are the undisputed kings of the guilt culture….and diddling little boys. Plus, you can still get in while the guilt is nice and fresh. I understand their new motto is “no child’s behind left”.

  7. C minor, so you would that the fool switch from past sins quilt and fear to hell fire and brimstone fear??? From imagined wrongs to imagined wrongs, some funny sh!t that:-))))

  8. Thompson’s brilliant! But when he say’s “From the theft of sheep and chickens, and subsequent hangings, to all kinds of nepotism, tribal slaughter, imperial invasions and counter-invasions, the extinction of fluffy creatures and high seas piracy.” I thought he was speaking of Scotland! Har har.
My family was displaced for sheep, for Gawds sake… I’m a victim… where do I apply for MY compensation?

  9. C minor, so you would that the fool switch from past sins quilt and fear to hell fire and brimstone fear???
Kinda reminds me of Don Quixote, sallying forth to joust with religion whenever it’s mentioned…

  10. What’s all this “we” talk. Since when do these idiots speak for anyone. I had no problem finding a wife and I don’t feel guilty about it either.

  11. James, I’m sorry to be the one to inform you, but your betters have discovered that there are no individuals, only kinds. Each individual … er, each “representative” of a kind, has its identity exhausted by the kind it is. So, you are responsible for the sins of your kind. See how easy that is.
By the way, that you feel no guilt is nothing to be proud of. It shows only that you are not as highly evolved as your betters. Repent now.

  12. So, is Sean Connery going to be hit with a lawsuit because Theo Hobson still wets his bed and can’t get a chub?

  13. People try to do well so they don’t have to licpve near poor people or ride the bus with them. Same for the ‘persons of color’ set … All dangerous people who most often despise and envy those of us who are not them. The news is full of thei violence, treachery and something about drugs keps popping up.
I don’t feel guilty about working my way to a better life, I am thrilled for the opportunity to work my way up a bit. WORK is they key here …. Stay in school, get some skills and shut your pie hole is my advise to the poor and the less motivated of all colors.
I used to see the wods ‘no fear’ on T-shirts … I want one that says ‘No Guilt’.

  14. Honest to god. What red blooded woman wants to be married to a pencil neck, continental poof? None that I know.

  15. “for the most part they are dangerous neurotics”
Well, yes. Except I would say that essentially all of them are dangerous neurotics. The argument from Hanman is reductio ad absurdum. After all, if we are responsible for the sins of our fifth previous generation ancestors then we are also responsible for, once ancestry is established, our ancestors massacring the Carthaginians, butchering Druids in Anglesey, or bashing in the heads of neanderthals 15,000 years ago.
It’s a key feature of Progressivism than guilt applies to groups, not just individuals. It’s not sufficient to be accountable for what I have done; I also have to be accountable for the things my group has done. As soon as individual guilt is translated into group guilt, the Heaps Paradox makes it unlimited and our personal guilt becomes infinite.
    Welcome to Post Modernist philosophy.

  16. Birds of a feather flock together. Damaged weaklings and mental deficients gravitate to each other and express there angst to the world from the group that is self identified as “The Left” or “progressive” or what have you.
These losers drain us all of our time and energy.

  17. Things cracked up leftys are saying in other realities:
“The new comeback of florid hockey hair is hegemonically whipping the face of the hoser class, forced to relive their losses in the hockey wars every time they walk down the street”
Eh, I can’t go on, it’s too hard to think like that.

  18. Occam and ugh,
“Neurotics”? “Psychopaths”? Why “medicalize” what’s wrong with them? Why offer them that excuse?
Call them what they are: thugs, aspiring tyrants. Not sick; evil.

  19. “There is no excuse for failing to feel liberal guilt about race and class.”
I make no excuses, I just don’t feel it.
Sucks to be a liberal who succeeds in this.
Should we obsessively think in terms of race and class as liberals do and then think in terms of blame and guilt?
    What a waste of energy.

  20. No problem, Nick.
Now about that other. What they’re doing is projecting their own failures and weaknesses. It’s not world-conquering megalomania evil. Afraid to stand on their own, they merge their identity with the group-think. If you want to find evil in it, then it’s the evil of pettiness, smallness and weakness. If the group is responsible, then they personally are absolved.

  21. strad baby, why do U religious fools always feel the need to thump the bible, why not try and be a little more of the “do as I do” rather than “do as I say”, there was no need, call, or reason for CM to drag religion into the discussion. But U fools do provide a lot of entertainment, even better than going to church. See I was a “victim”(have a hard time punching that out with a straight face)religious bias as a youth:-)))

  22. As a white male Celt, I don’t apologize to anybody for anything. And white,
male, Anglo-Saxon nick, you people set up the empire, etc., but we did the heavy
lifting. And, I might add, sassenig nick, Canada is largely the creation of
the Celts, specifically of the Scots and Presbyterian Irish.

  23. …a big factor in the sexual malfunction of our times; the difficulty we have finding life-long partners…
Who is this “we” of which we speak?

  24. MNE, why did you leap from my reference to benevolent religion and leaving the rest of us alone into hellfire and damnation? I was suggesting another outlet for these pitiful creature’s angst. Mother Theresa’s order could use the help, for example. But you can’t seem to admit that maybe there are some good people who happen to believe different things than you. I don’t care what or who you chose to believe, but I agree with Strad that you’re a one-trick pony whenever the topic is anything close to religion. I would suggest that you, too, need to find some other outlet for your frustrations because you sure come across as a miserable bugger. Lighten up!

  25. Genuine apologies are empty.. Why would I accept some trumped up BS from some lib left seance.. What my ancestors did or didn’t do was their own business and none of mine..
    The way I see it..
1% of Europeans held slaves.. Rich people and arms dealers profited immensely..
It would have never happened on the scale that it did if the Africans would have paid gold for their guns like everybody else.. They wouldnt part with it (they had lots), yet they still wanted to do business..
A DEAL was struck where they would sell their enemies (instead of killing them) into slavery in return for guns, powder and flint..

  26. Jay – it’s worse than that. The origin for “slave” is “slav”, as in eastern european. The Romans and Turks both loved raiding the area as a source of cheap and easy to obtain labour. Cultures that didn’t practice slavery are few and far between (ref: Thomas Sowell) and the exception. You’re right, there were a lot fewer owners than there were slaves or serfs (less than slaves, serfs were considered as a part of the land).

  27. Sounds like little Theo squats to pee, wears a diaper to bed, is afraid of men, and is prone to irrational spells of self loathing… fair enough… The really disturbing part is that little Theo believes his personal neurosis is proof that everyone else is as F’d up as he is. Someone should tell little Theo to keep his disturbingly embarrassing bedwetting theories to himself.

  28. Always beware of people trying to induce unearned guilt, that is, guilt for things you couldn’t possibly have had any control over.
It’s a power grab. It’s also the left’s version of Original Sin.

  29. If NME and Canadian Observer aren’t making some stupid remarks, they’re just not trolling hard enough.
Guilt in the leftist PC sense is the kind of mental self-flagellation the left needs to keep people in line. I’m not sure why Benedict Cumberbatch or Sean Connery need to apologise but when the guilt-swamped parties get out of their self-hating stupour, they shall let us know.

  30. LOL… Good point! Little Theos self loathing is well deserved, and not at all irrational. Although, I’m positive that little Theo does indeed squat to pee, and he probably cries when he does.

  31. I’m sorry, but just how does Mr. Hobson claim to know the “male psyche”..?? It’s obvious he hasn’t one, nor, I doubt, do any of the metrosexuals with whom he associates. And just to be fair, this term would apply equally to both, er, all of the gender types in his life.
