Tonight we watch, and listen to, the original – and unaired – Bonanza theme song as sung by the Cartwrights themselves in the pilot episode. It’s all a bit….off-kilter, somehow.
Don’t worry about Dan Blocker’s horse; I’m sure he was fine after a little liniment and a rubdown.

    Do meddlesome governments have a right to tell people they can’t kill themselves with junk food?
    If taxpayers are paying for universal health care, then shouldn’t we let the stupid people who willingly poison themselves with junk food, just die when they get terminally ill from consuming it all their lives. Maybe give them a taxpayer funded morphine drip, to be kind.

    … and if you’ve watched Bonanza, I can tell you that the trek from the ranch house to Virginia City would take a little more than a day to make on horseback.
    It’s about an hour+ drive of some 40 miles from Incline Village, NV to Virginia City, NV.. Up the mountain, down the mountain, across the valley and up the mountain, then down the mountain…
    First TV show I ever saw in color.

  11. Back to the original subject, the lyrics to the well-known theme song of Bonanza. Little-known fact: Lorne Greene performs the song on the B side of his ’60s pop hit, “Ringo,” with substantially more lyrics.

    Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U. S. Department of the Interior, asks us “Please Do Not Feed the Animals.” Their stated reason for the policy is because “The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves.”

    Bonanza was the one show that the whole family sat down in the great room and watched while having our Sunday evening meal.
    What peterj said all three times. As to the first tip, the Romans discovered that the mob does not take kindly to cutting the wheat and circuses benefit.

  16. Those that fail to read history are doomed to repeat it. Came across this piece in the NY Times from Feb 5, 1944, decribing how fairly-minded Dems wanted to take back control of their party. Can’t help but feel how eerly similar his words decribe the situation then – and now.

  20. Someone in the comments explained that the clip was aired years later on a retrospective look back at the show and its production, actors, origins, etc., and has been aired since.
    Perhaps I should have said “not aired as part of the original series” or “not used during the original run of the series.”

  30. I don’t recall Irwin Cotler uttering a peep about the oppression of Canadians by our “human rights” commissions. Maybe he’s only interested in what happens in other countries.
