  1. I inherited a Woods winter bag that was made in the 1950s.
    It weighed over 40 pounds and had a down inner bag that slipped between the layers of the waxed canvas outer bag. The inside surface of the canvas was covered with wool blanket (very scratchy).
    The whole thing was 7ft long when put together and the downside was the weight. Used properly it would protect you at any temperature.

  2. Best cold-weather sleeping bag I’ve ever seen is the Canadian military’s arctic bag.

  3. They work until you have to crawl out in the middle of the night to do sentry duty and then try and get back into them an hour later in a 10 man arctic tent in the dark.

  4. Enjoyed winter camping while a scout, years ago, yes.
    Taught me a very important lesson: the only thing holding most of us back is listening to other people whining….

  5. After reading that article again I get the whole thing about male versus female ratings.
    Wondering if the research included the apparent need to get up and pee 3 or four times a night, or menstrual cycles or menopause.
