As someone who lives in the Brandon Souris riding, I think a few things came into play that won’t come in to play again.
Rolf Dinsdales father was a much loved conservative member of parliament Walter Dinsdale and some loved him so much that they decided to vote for his son.
The other thing was that Justin Trudeau shook hands and kissed babies in this area until he met every person that left there house. He was wandering around Monterey estates, a senior living community, in Brandon, talking to people as they took the garage out. He was in Brandon countless times and ran full page ads in the Brandon Sun. The signs all said in huge letters TEAM JUSTIN and then in smaller letter, Rolf Dinsdale, I suspect there was some younger voters that had a hard time finding the candidates name on the ballot, they were looking for Justin.
I know in the next election Justin will be nowhere to be found and some are laying bets that Rolf will be back in Ontario where he truly comes from.
Liberals being Liberals (by email) – “As of 12:35 tonite, Rolf Dinsdale did not show up at the Larry Maguire HQ to concede. The NDP candidate did. Not cool.”

Looks quite a bit closer than a 29 point spread, but what would you expect from the Winnipeg Free Press.
It could be nothing… Larry McGuire in the lead in Brandon Souris with 17 polls to go.
Also Golden Boy Trudeau can’t seem to get any of his candidates above 50% even in bastions of Liberalism like Toronto Centre and Bourasa.
A nice sweep for the Conservatives with a clear majority in Provencher and pundits were predicting the Liberals had a strong chance.
If I was the NDP I would be worried that pretty boy is going to take is vote back from the orange crush. Not a big surprise, with the media support the shiny pony has received I can see how the LIV will vote Liberal for Trudeau, and that’s all they are voting for, the name.
Also a big lol at the Freep in Winnipeg (Pravda of the Prairies is my nick for that rag) I guess you can try and influence voters with reporting a trashy poll.

The NDP vote went to the Liberals in Brandon tonight. Definitely a coalition between the NDP and Liberals in Brandon City polls. I think the rural vote is lifting Larry Maguire.

The big story tonight, for me, was discovering that candidates can put wrestling-style stage names on the ballot — such as John “The Engineer” Turmel of Toronto Centre.

They reported what was happening, but were they cheering about it? That’s the difference.
The CBC still thinks its too close to call after all the polls are in and the Conservative won with more than 400 votes to spare.
Do they understand how many people 400 votes is? Its basically all the MPS and Senators in a room and none of them able to fib on their expenses.
Or its all of the people in the country who still believe Peter Mansbridge when he pontificates on anything.
Or its 16 full classrooms each full of 25 students…………..
Or its 8 buses full of 50 people………..
Or, assuming most people like to stand at least 2 feet away from each other in a queue, its a line that is 800 feet long. That’s about a 1/4 kilometre. It’s not a “country mile”, but its long enough that the telephoto lens on a CBC camera would have to try real hard to figure out who was being filmed.
Let’s not overlook that the Liberals share of the vote increased significantly in Manitoba from the last General election. How much of that was due to the disenchantment with the current NDP government in that province?
I bet no LSM (Lame Stream Media) will be bringing up that little observation.

As one who was involved with Reform the CPC had better understand what is happening in the west. Harper has abandoned the need for ideology and trusted that he could carry his grassroots movement from years ago. What I think he fails to realize is the extent that progressives within the Party have corrupted what was built under Manning and Day.
Conservatives should not crow over Dipper losses in eastern Canada. They are a vital vote splitting tool which is essential to continued CPC majorities. With the putrid expansion again of MP’s headed to Ottawa urban areas, especially in TO, will gain influence. Dipper hardcore or Liebel Lite, a hard choice.

Justin Trudeau, big winner.
Looking at this I think what -I- as a CPC voter really want, is to know exactly how many snivel servants are getting pink-slipped, exactly what budgets are getting cut. In other words, exactly what Mr. Harper and the CPC are doing to turn this country around from ever-growing bureaucracy to slowly shrinking bureaucracy.
I want to SEE it shrink, boys. You should be advertising and bragging every time you sh1tcan another department in the Bureau of Paperclips. Every time you save the taxpayers a nickel it should be in the papers.
Ken is right, the swing to the middle was very calculated and will be repeated. The trick is to do it without alienating the base and the upcoming balanced budget will go a long way to that end. But we all need to start giving the CPC the room it needs to position itself for the election. Another majority will lead to further reforms and, most importantly, continued cleansing of the civil service which is still stacked with Liberal stooges. I will use the pendulum analogy again: Push it too hard and it swings back at you with a vengeance. The CPC needed all those disillusioned Liberals to gain a majority and will need them again.
As for the by-election, Brandon-Souris was way too close for comfort but on the whole not a bad night.
Why is the status quo a Liberal victory in the media? The government is expected to lose by-elections. They didn’t. Some Conservative defeat!
In the 7 years or so of CPC governance – not a single by-election seat has ever been lost. I think that’s note worthy.

As one pundit pointed out the results reinforced the status quo, but somehow the mediarazzi is swooning over JT and the Grits’ performance.
Let’s see, with the Senate scandal in high dudgeon, with byelections generally known as protest votes or uninterested/low turnout, the evil Conservatives retained their seats, as did the Liberals. The NDP Mulcair`s so-called strong performance in the Commons got them nothing.
How this is good news for the opposition parties escapes me. The only good thing is Linda McQuaig the ardent socialist ideologue, didn`t get into the H of C; Lizzie is embarrassment enough.
That’s about right, IMO.
