Curiously enough, in his version of the speech, President Barack Obama’s delivery contained an omission – in a line that every other celebrity delivered as “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom,” the President left out the words “under God.”

  4. No biggy, the teleprompter writer is a standard Obama staffer; could not spell under god.
    Or left it out,as the “boss” might get angry.
    Secondly as other point out, a narcissistic individual can only worship their one true god.

  6. 150th anniversary of one of the most consequential battles in US, if not world history, and he didn’t bother to show. Supposedly Lincoln is one of his influences, as our watchdog media has told us. Yeah, not so much.

    Even atheist me sees the hierarchy there:
    1. God.
    2. Men.
    3. Government.
    So it’s very un-American of Obama to get rid of 1. and move 3. up to the top.
    Plus when Lincoln wrote the Gettysburg Address the equivalent of the then population of Canada had been killed in the conflict. I think Lincoln became progressively religious due to this and the deaths of his children. It’s not Obama’s place to modify history.

  8. Actually, originally his version was “under allah” but one quick thinking teleprompter operated fixed it.

  9. I expect him to change the line “…government of the people, by the people, for the people…” to government of the people, by the government, for the government.

  10. He wanted to say “under Obama” or “under socialism” or “under wealth redistribution” or something along those lines, but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.
    Cannot stand the man. He is creepy.

  13. The declaration included the word Creator instead of God for a reason. In one of the first instances of inclusiveness, Creator was
    used as not all freedom loving citizens believed in God per se,however everyone one recognizes a creator whether it be God Allah, Vishnu Gaia,the stork or cabbage leaves.

  15. It’s high-time for presidents to stop mentioning ‘God’ in public speeches. It’s just not relevant to the modern secular America that is our future and present. Too bad Obama replaces the conventional God with proglodyte God-government.

  19. Glenn Beck made the same observation a while back when Obama referenced the Constitution. By leaving out the God reference, Beck suggested that that implied that those rights were then bestowed by man and what man giveth man can take away.
    Rex Murphy has an excellent column on the beauty of the GA in this past Saturday’s NP. I learned that Lincoln started his address with a hat tip to a particular Psalms that included the passage ‘Three score and ten years…’

    “Government by the government, for the government, and tool the people”

  23. Ken Burns et al is just providing cover for Obama by saying that they requested him to read the so called “Nicolay Version.”
    Notwithstanding that, nobody tells the President what to do. Obama could have refused. But he didn’t. He acquiesced. By doing so, he tacitly agreed that the words “under God” were either unimportant or false.
    We will judge him accordingly.

    What dreck. If there were a reasonable point in having the Nicolay version read, why would you pick the sitting President of the USA to read it?
    The Nicolay “version” is not the Gettysburg address. From what I’ve seen, it is nothing more than an early draft that has survived until now only because of who originally spoke the finished product.

  31. There are five versions of the Gettysburg address-some historians say there were nine. The one written in stone at the Lincoln memorial contains “under God” and is referred to as the Hay version. The Nicolay version is considered the first draft as it was written on Whitehouse Executive letterhead for the first page of the draft and does not contain the phrase “under God” -all five versions were handwritten by Lincoln, containing changes and corrections (Hay, Nicolay, Everett, Bliss,and Bancroft). The address was reported on back in 1863, but there is no agreement as to what was actually spoken. Lincoln was known to ablib or add to his speeches once he began speaking. The New York Times printed the entire speech on November 20th – it was the Hay version containing “under God”. The Everett and Bancroft versions also contain the phrase “under God” as do later copies of the Bliss version. Both Everette and Lincoln spoke at the address-Everette’s speech lasted two hours. It’s all confusing as some say the Hay version id not use “under God’, but the New York Times printing of the speech is said to be the Hay version and it most certainly does contain “under God” as does the memorial inscription (see link below for original NY Times newspaper printing).
    According to Wiki: “at least three reporters telegraphed the text of Lincoln’s speech on the day the Address was given with the words “under God” included. Historian William E. Barton argues that:[71]
    Every stenographic report, good, bad and indifferent, says ‘that the nation shall, under God, have a new birth of freedom.’ There was no common source from which all the reporters could have obtained those words but from Lincoln’s own lips at the time of delivery. It will not do to say that [Secretary of War] Stanton suggested those words after Lincoln’s return to Washington, for the words were telegraphed by at least three reporters on the afternoon of the delivery.”

  34. More confusing than first thought. There is a Gettysburg historical website, but it was not created until 2011 and argues for no under God and contradicts other information sources.
    The Bliss copy is said to be the official copy because it’s the only one that contains Lincoln’s signature and is the copy used to inscribe the the Lincoln memorial. Some information sources are stating Hay is the original and ascribes that version to the NY Times although the original printing of the speech in the NY Times uses the phrase “under God”. The Nicolay and Hay versions, without “under God”, were placed in the library of congress in 1916.
    “Discovering that his fourth written copy could not be used, Lincoln then wrote a fifth draft, which was accepted for the purpose requested. The Bliss copy,[e] named for Colonel Alexander Bliss, Bancroft’s stepson and publisher of Autograph Leaves, is the only draft to which Lincoln affixed his signature. Lincoln is not known to have made any further copies of the Gettysburg Address. Because of the apparent care in its preparation, and in part because Lincoln provided a title and signed and dated this copy, it has become the standard version of the address and the source for most facsimile reproductions of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. It is the version that is inscribed on the South wall of the Lincoln Memorial.[33]” Wiki.

    To Obama this is just another None Muslim infidel document.
