On this day in 1903, Leslie Townes Hope was born in Eltham, a suburb of London, England. Later in life he became known as Bob Hope and entertained the Western World for many decades. Here’s a delightful slideshow documenting his career. And here’s his 1967 Christmas Special.

Bob Hope on his game…
Cheers
Hans Rupprecht, Commander in Chief

He was rich, famous and still married to the same woman for 69 years. He was admired and respected by the left and the right, the young and the old, men and women. Compare that to the Hollywood elite today and one can see how far down the sewer we have sunk.
Yesterday would also have been Peter Cushing’s 100th birthday.
I saw Bob at the outdoor Expo theater in Vancouver, 1987. One of the best evening’s entertainment I’ve ever had.
When he was through doing the “schticks” that he performed so many times on TV, he did a straight standup comic act for about 15 minutes.
I’ve seen and heard a lot of standup comics, but for that quarter hour,he was the best, period.
On the other end of the scale we’ve had a tragedy in Canada today.

Been watching Bob Hope movies on TCM all day. He basically plays the same role in every movie but they’re great to watch and his characters always portray a rogue on the surface but a man with a strong moral code beneath.
I’m watching a ski nose flick right now in memorial
Didn’t see a segment on there with one of my favourites Jack Benny. Bob Hope has given me a lots of laughs over the years but what I appreciate most about him was his tireless efforts on behalf of his country’s troops in dark times.

It was well known Hope was a golfer, often appearing on USO stages carrying a driver. The story is he played his first round of golf at the Charleswood club in Winnipeg during his vaudeville days, and got hooked on the game.
Bob Hope is among my favorites, along with Red Skelton, and Jack Benny. I still have Bob’s book in my library, “Five Women I Love”, which is about his Vietnam Story. The five women were Anny Sydney, Anita Bryant, Janis Paige, Anna Maria Alberghettie and Jill St. John.
Bob was a class act, not like the flakes peddling their crude so-called jokes today.
Yes don morris…he was a tragedy in Canada.
I was cheered to see the celebration/memorial for Bob Hope, was really hoping to ignore all things about the other guy.
Thanks — this was great! Happy memories of a true original and the greatest supporter of the troops.
Bob Hope’s timing was impeccable. He was funny but never vulgar. Vulgarity seems to be the stock in trade of most “comedians” today: Sometimes nostalgia is justified! They broke the mold when comedians like Bob Hope and Jack Benny died.
Thanks for the memories, guys!
It was also JFK’s b’day.
God, I miss him and Bing.
