Government regulation is stifling America’s vibrant pharmaceutical industry. A recent report by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology estimates that it costs an average of $1.2 billion to win FDA approval and bring a new drug to market.

Sad reality is that if America did not allow harmful food additives, it would not even need 90% of those medications. No sympathy to them here.
Food additives cause HIV? Get a life. Oh yes – do you consider salt a harmful additive? Sugar? Spices? Things which have been used in cooking since time immemorial
Vibrant pharmaceutical industry? Please save the emotive words. And don’t forget the Swiss pharmaceutical industry, nor the French.
As for American ingenuity, it is not dead! Nor does it slumber! Just go to Amazon.com,
and search for “b**t pl*g”. When I did it I got 23 pages of the bloody things!
I suspect you will be one of those people lying on his death bed and not understanding how you could be dying of ….nothing. The last 2 funerals I’ve been to were friends that lived clean and ate healthy. My beer swilling, pot bellied, eat anything greasy, chimney smoking neighbor has outlived them by more than 4 years so far. Just sayin’ .
Big pharmaceutical companies like it that way, cuts out all that pesky competition who can’t afford to play.
You really have to have blinders on to defend big pharma with all the class and personal lawsuits going on over all the rushed-to-market products that have harmed people. I don;t begrudge them making a profit on a product that works but neither do I think they have deserved the official protection they get from liability for a lot of their disasters – like psychotropics which are implicated in most mass shootings and many domestic killings – or contaminated vaccines which cause all sorts of metabolic and cellular-level disorders. There is plenty of skeletons buried on big pharma’s side of the fence, they should be careful not to call attention to their graveyard, there’s lots to dig up there.
Well, the first response is, “what is your answer?” In these discussions there is much heat but little light, assumptions that large pharmaceutical companies are huge lakes of cash, and easy punching-bags for politicians, and a lack of realisation that we need medicines and vaccines. Where are they to come from? As for the pharmaceutical industry being protected, well, not against large tort lawsuits.
Occam – what protection do they get? They can be sued for any reason, or no reason. You may wish to acquaint yourself with the last 50 years of tort law, wrt to pharma.
You really have to have blinders on to not see the huge blessing the pharmaceutical industry has been to human well-being. Infectious diseases would not have magically disappeared, on their own, without antibiotics, anti-virals, etc. Infectious disease was a far greater killer before the advent of antibiotics, and to date, the evil pharmaceutical industry has developed the only effective treatments known to medical science.
John Lewis – the point is, the US market pays the lion’s share of R & D, the rest of the world largely pays prices that only cover the variable cost of manufacturing. So, the burden on profitability the FDA places on the US market is particularly important to maintaining R & D of new drugs. People tend to forget that for every compound that reaches Phase 3′ many compounds were tried for which the only recovery on investment comes from the drug that makes it all the way to final approval.
The article points out the absurdity of requiring effectiveness on all patients suffering from a particular disease, as humans, and their ailments are not similarly uniform.
Whenever it comes to big Pharma and I feel any empathy I like to watch this:

The FDA is owned by the pharmaceuticals and big business, not the other way round.
Things like medical marijuana would have been legal years ago it weren’t for the pharmaceuticals/FDA merger.I would even say that health has taken a back seat when, all you care about is profit and $$ not peoples health anymore.Throw in a little political meddling and you have a disaster on your hands. When you look at how deeply the corruption is, and that they hurt more people then do good. Then the only answer is to get rid of it and start over.Maybe with a little luck the FDA will go over that fiscal cliff too.
The FDA is paid to make the cost of drug development prohibitive it’s not an accident.
> Food additives cause HIV
You chose one of those 10%, Einstein, whereas I was referring to cancer, heart conditions, diabetes, allergies, inflammations and a host of other conditions that DO MAKE UP 90% of morbidity cases.
