Ryan has not been aggressive in slapping down Biden, but that does not mean he has lost the debate on facts.
Ryan took the debate seriously, and decided he would address the electorate in a serious manner, which, as a statesman, he should.
This debate could not and has not changed the fact that Obama looked seriously second rate when he stood toe to toe with Mitt Romney.
“Joe Smiley”
Small c : I agree – being a little less polite is a nitpick on my part.
joe has the creepiest smile ever seen on TV.
Like a really angry Cheshire Cat.
The main thing that struck me was Ryan was serious, but not too serious as he did joke a bit. Biden was just laughing like a fool at everything. That defined it for me.
For the first half hour or so it seemed a bit contentious and scattered, and not particularly focused, or revealing, or compelling.
Biden has the manner of a belligerent, I-don’t-give-a-shit drunk who’s momentarily sober, and I think it slightly threw Ryan off at first.
Not really a pivotal debate, IMO. People are going to vote for either Obama or Romney, and I don’t think it’s really going to affect the election one way or another.
It did get better after about an hour or so.
Abortion? WTF!? Moderator is covering for Biden… moderator asks Ryan a question, and then interupts. Bidens shit eating grin on every subject is annoying.
My faith defines who I am…lol
He is so full of crap!!!
When the topic is abortion, Joe speaks like a saint.
Ryan lost independents on abortion. It is what it is.
Biden talks about his religionand how it tells him to help the less fortunate but only gives 300 bucks to charity?
And Joe goes all flukey…
How many times has Captain Creepy called Ryan my “friend”?
Right now is when Ryan needs to say “there’s this woman named Sandra Fluke…”.
My friend.
/drink
Woot! The Romney/Ryan picks for SCOTUS will be partisan, whereas the Obama/Biden picks will be soberly chosen! So sez Angry Joe.
Devout:
Having or showing deep religious feeling or commitment.
Totally committed to a cause or belief.
Biden says he’s a devout catholic. If you are supportive of the Democratic Party position on abortion you cannot be a devout catholic.
Why abortion? *SIGH*
It’s an obamanation alright his buddy literally is an obamanation
Sammy – you nailed it; Iowahawk’s twitter feed perfectly captures the absurdity of Joe Biden operating in any adult capacity, let alone VP. He’s a short-timer regardless of who wins the election, and so will be as bad as he wants to be.
Someone held up a sign backstage: “Joe, tone it down!!!”
So now he’s being all grave and soft-spoken and solemn and intense.
47%! Drink! (And lying about Romney having insulted the military with that comment.)
Biden: “It’s an Obama nation” 😉
Ryan perking up a bit.
Gord Tulk – agreed; Biden is ” devout ” in the sense that Hollywood actors or Beltway politicians are devout. Totally phony.
That is three times that Biden caught himself saying “my friend”, LOL.
Biden whining about the time.
Bush’s fault!
47%!
You in heartened a god awful problem , and doubled it in four years!!!
Biggest (or one of ) between this debate and the potus one is that Romney siezed the momentum and the moderator and Obama let him. In this one the moderator had a tighter rein and Biden is a veteran rhetoritician and filibuster artist so the flow was much more back and forth.
Level playing fields and clear shots made Merica…!!!
In closing Biden blaming “what we inherited” and thus Bush. \drink
You in inherited a god awful problem , and doubled it in four years!!!
Ryan won in my opinion if you are going by professional attitude , and just a sound political figure.
Biden sounds like me with my buddies at the end of the night in our local pub ..lol just loud drunken blathering garbage!!
the president and I are not going to rest … but we may play golf ..
Thank goodness that BS’er Biden is through.
“Level the playing field” = waivers for all my friends.
So I guess who “won” depends upon which did what they needed to do more. Did Biden pull it out of the fire for Obama? No. So Biden lost.
Ryan won by being a credible, responsible safe choice for VP. Remember what a gong show the palin Biden debate was like.
Have tried to vote on sun news website and keep getting an error message.
Wonder why?
Closer than I would like.
Yup, Biden with no knock-out leaves only the defense of what happened in Libya, and 2 more Presidential debates to stop the bleeding from B. Hussien’s campaign.
Good luck with that, SCOAMF.
gellen, me to, server probably overloaded.
CBC viewers have chimed in… 88% Biden, 10% Ryan.
So clearly Ryan won.
“Both men achieved what they wanted to” – CBC’s Chris Hall. So clearly, CBC viewers have, once again, telegraphed the bias of the CBC overall, more than what actually took place in the debate.
135 comments so far. Michael Harkov had 17 of them. Nobody asked for a running commentary.
Bandwidth deficit? Looks like it.
Commenter “Hairball” at Stephen Green’s drunkblogging thread at PJM:
I have to say that, notwithstanding the pre-debate concerns, the moderator did a pretty credible job.
I’m not sure how voters will respond to Ryan’s stand on abortion (wether or not you agree or disagree).
Ryan certainly acquitted himself as the more serious and credible candidate. Biden, while avoiding his trademark gaffes, came across as juvenile and a bit desperate with his forced smirking. I think Ryan was a clear winner. The overall impact of the Vice-Presidential debate, however, is probably minor compared to the influence that the Obama/Romney debates will have on the campaign.
“Your minute by minute thoughts are appreciated”. Where did I read that?
Oh, make it 18. Of what will probably be over 200.
Chris Wallace is ripping Biden for being so disrespectful – worst he’s seen since the very first Nixon Kennedy debates. Might be the meme that persists…
One wonders if Obama is not going to follow-up with just continuously talking & laughing & interrupting. It’s an effective way to overpower your opponent but leads to a lacklustre D-E-B-A-T-E.
He may try Robert W. but I don’t think B. Hussien can carry the next two debates without becoming distracted by facts he can’t make sense of.
And if Mitt can continue to make B. Hussien appear that he may not have it all together upstairs…
Biden was rude and obnoxious. We’ll see how that plays out with voters. Yucking it up when Ryan was giving his views on Libya and other Middle East countries made Biden look like a clod. (Was he on something?)
I listened on the radio.
Totally agree w/ Charles Krauthammer, I thought Biden did much better than expected. Asked A TV watcher, Ryan kicked.
In the post-debate coverage on FOX Krauthammer had an interesting take: If you read the transcript, it’s even; if you listen on radio, Biden won; if you watched on TV, Ryan won.
Much was being made of Biden’s “disrespectful” sneering and smirking and mugging; one pundit said he’d watched every VP debate for (40? 45?) years, and had never seen anything like that level of contempt and disrespect.
