To be fair, there is truth to that. The reserve lands are held in trust by the feds who often erect roadblocks to development. One of the few good things this federal government is doing is allowing private land ownership on reserves-only if the band is okay with it.

I find that number a little hard to believe.In 1991,I was stationed at Ft.Simpson,NWT,an island in the Mackenzie River.Arrived in March,and one of the first things I noticed was a herd of Ski-doos parked on the ice in the river.Being curious,I asked what was going on.Turns out to be a yearly ritual.All those skidoos had seen 2 seasons on the trap line,so the Indians said they needed replacement.Feds said no.Solution? But them on the ice,watch them sink during break-up,then file for a new one,as the “old” one was destroyed. Problem solved! Funny thing,you couldn’t even go down to the sunk ‘doos,take serial #’s,and nail the f&*kers,as you where on sacred river territory,so the RCMP kept you away.The scam is still going strong,only with quads added in now.

People often ask me,”what can we do about the terrible conditions on the Native/First Nations Reserves”.
My answer: nothing. Until Indians/Natives/FN’s decide THEY want to get out of the shithole lifestyle they live in, we can’t do anything,except watch various politicians on both sides exploit the situation for their own benefit.
You can’t make a drunk or drug addict quit, and you can’t make a people who are used to sitting on a welfare Reserve into productive citizens,without their own desire to do so.
I grew up in a small northern town surrounded by six Indian Rez’s,went to school with the kids from grade one through high school,which few of the Indian kids completed.
The biggest problem is a culture of doing nothing,and getting paid for it. Second biggest problem is FN politicians who want to maintain the status quo.
Then you have white exploiters like Charlie Angus who couldn’t give a damn about the Injuns,but like to make loud noises to make themselves look good. The Judge who decreed against accountability on the Attawapiskat Rez did no favours for the Indians.

Attawapiskat received almost 90 million over 4 years, which Iberia and Huffington post seem to brush off as not relevant. No one knows where the money went. The Chief may be driving a new Escalade but it’s not politically correct to ask where he got the money. You can take this type of government efficiency right across the country and it would probably look the same. Some tribes in Alberta and BC are filthy rich and still sucking off the public teat with tax exemptions and perks that the white man could only dream about. Yet some of the people in the community still live under conditions that would gag a maggot. They all want to be Indians but only if they can have every amenity the white man has to offer. The solution to change, as I see it is simple.
1 Give every tribe outright ownership to the land they are on, with the same entitlements as if they had purchased it from the Crown. Also ,every resident now owns his/her house and the property it sits on. Buy,sell or burn it down…up to them.
2 All land claims stop immediately. No appeal.
3 No changes in government benefits for 5 years including welfare. Status Quo. Then 10% annual reduction in all benefits and tax exemptions.
4 Free education and assisted living through university for 5 years followed by 10% cutbacks anually. Free trade school tuition with assisted living under same time frame.
5 You want a Lawyer, you pay for it. Instant tort reform.
6 Abolish the Indian act by Parliamentary legislation. Welcome to the 21 century. That was then….this is now. Get a life, get a job and get out of our wallets.

I think it would be difficult to shut the tap completely after 5 years. The whole Canadian north would turn into ghost towns and the tens of thousands government workers would have no time to adapt to a real job. Almost all of them have skills that are useless in the real world. The Indians would all feel like they were being pushed off a cliff and just getting them to comprehend that the gravy train has derailed would probably take the first 5 years. I don’t blame the Indians for this mess. I blame the stupid politicians and the taxpayer funded lawyers . The doddering idiots in the supreme court share a good portion of blame for this too with their interpetation of revisionist history. The Indians will need time to decide on how to step into the real world or back into their own world without having support from nanny, and their leadership will actually have to step up and take some responsibility if they truly care for their charges. 15 years is not excessive to get us out of this mess. At least it’s a exit strategy where now there is none. The safety net should remain the same for all Canadians. Kind of like kicking your child out of the basement when he’s 35. Hey lberia, here’s a treat, save money and drive up to Bonnyville, AB and visit the reserves around there, same thing. Cars, trucks, quads all sitting around the house, and cedar siding ripped off the houses used for firewood. Oh, and gravel roads to boot.
If one reads most of the Native treaties you will note we the taxpayer are only responsible for ensuring they get to practice their culture unfettered by the government. No where in those treaties does it include free healthcare, free housing or housing atall. I am all for providing them with teepees or igloos but not side splits or mobile homes. They wanna protect their culture then they best start living it.

There is nothing stopping them from going back to their culture or their old way of life. Live in teepees , no electricity , no snowmobiles,atv’s, cars, trucks or anything else the white man has given them. Like I said earlier, they want every amenity the white man has to offer, yet retain their culture and heritage. Hell, the Amish are closer to Indian culture than the Indians are. The chief has a deputy chief and twelve councillors and if they all split the $14 million in wages and administration costs they claim in their financial statement evenly, that works out to $1,000,000 each per year. Or almost $3000 each a day. And I have not even included the $12 million they claim for program delivery? Hopefully that and the other 6 million they get from the tax payers goes to their band members. And why do they need 12 councillors most towns in BC with a population of about 3000 only have 4 and they are part time.
