We are Canada, destroyer of the world!
Canada’s Oil, the World’s Carbon
…the climate question must be addressed, if only to give a full accounting of the range of consequences of developing the tar sands, an effort in which the United States will be complicit [emphasis added–guilty! guilty! guilty!] if it allows the pipeline…

Should we tell tem about the Orinoco sites in Venezuela.
Nah, let them be all stupid, all the time.
“The department’s first environmental assessment was grossly inadequate, one of the main reasons President Obama rejected the proposal.”
…But waaaay down the list from the main one: pandering for votes.
Did they they also flay Obama’s buddy, Buffet, who will control railway movement of oil sands oil to suitable pipeline pumping stations deeper in the US if Keystone can be scuttled?
I see that the Grey Lady, a.k.a the NY Times, is becoming more irrelevant by the day. Any semblance of being anything other than a leftoid eco-enviro-socialist mouthpiece.
Come on astroid…
Can mean only one thing when they get this riled.
Winning.
Let’s hope we keep it that way. An NDP win can not be tolerated.
Quote: ” What is less certain is whether it will ask an essential global question that transcends borders: What is the pipeline’s likely effect on the climate?”
The answer to this transcendental question is: too small to measure. The pipeline (and Canadian oil production), will however, will cause outbreaks of inanity, teeth-grinding, spontaneous fits wailing, ululation and apoplexy amongst the editorial staff of the NY Times.
For which I am grateful.
Right. Everytime Crusty Clark pinchs a loaf it goes straight into the Pacific Ocean no water treatment plant in between.
You think a hole city dumping their poop Streight into the ocean would be a story.
I wonder how many barrels a day that is.
Back in the day when eastern US industrialization was at its peak, and its toxic zenith, these mooks couldn’t even spare a remorseful grimace as they proceeded to turn Canada’s great lakes into a chemical stew and our inland lakes and rivers into battery acid. Billions lost directly from US pollution killing commercial fishing, recreational land values and the acidic damage to property – not a word.
But the moment the northern giant awakens its industrial strength in the far north well, that’s another story. F’ing hypocrites.
The faster the NYT dies the better off the World .
These guys must be getting paid off by the Saudis. Only reasonable explanation.
House of Saud does -not- want the biggest reserve of oil in the WORLD to hit the Pacific market. They’ve got mega-yachts to pay for, after all.
“What is the pipeline’s likely effect on the climate?”
Sweet bugger all. Oil goes “in” at one end and comes “out” the other, into a big fat tanker. Unless you burn the oil to release CO, CO2 oil is basically inert CO2-wise.
As for the pipe to build the pipeline, it doesn’t give off CO2 as it sits there delivering crude to market, so it isn’t affecting the climate at all.
Same pattern emerges….
State an emotional argument as fact and then build on it.
Same MO with gun control, abortion and evry other lefty agenda.
The current drought is not an unexplained phenomina but rather the predicted effect of the PDO (El Nino/La Nina) cycle. No surprises there. But the alarmists crank their grinder anyhoo.
But this ballyhoo was predicted by such as the contributers of WUWT last winter….no surprises there either…..
Here in morontario, this summer/dry spell is more normal than the past summer….the first in a while with no 3/4 week respite from having to mow the @#$%^ lawn. However total annual precipitation varies little…the old adage dry planting/wet harvest seems consistant.
Historically the Great Lakes level varies with the PDO effect on Northern Ontario.
Eastern Ontario always seems either parched or flooded out….probably why South-Western Ontario developed more strongly….just sayin’. It’s probably not just trees, lakes and rock….
I look at this and wonder what the fuss is all about….it’s just another pipeline….it’s been done before…many many times.

sasquatch, are you LOVING this weather or what? I haven’t cut the three acres of brown since June, except to go over the septic bed and to mow my “pond”. I can see exactly where the pipes for the septic go, its the only green on the whole yard. Could have taken a hay mower to the pond, would have gotten two or three round bales out of it.
But then what the hell would I do with three giant round bales of pond grass? Rent a forklift?
Ezra, SunnewsTV and ethical oil should investigate to see how many shares of the NYTimes are owned and/or controlled by Saudi Arabia.
Also, to save the world from excess C02, President Obama must order the NYTimes to immediately cease killing trees and revert to a digital only publication!
And of course the letter to Hillary Clinton from ten “top climate scientists” concerned about the effect of the pipeline includes the signatures of our heroes James Hansen and Michael Mann.
I guess liars don’t have to stop lying once they’re exposed,if there’s no consequence for being caught.

Right you are Ford Prefect, the former zealot of an enviro-nazi min, David Anderson (not the handsome man from Sask., the walking corpse critter who worked for Paul II and the Cretin) refused to talk about this fact – Victoria B.C. uses the Pacific ocean for a sewer!
A study should be launched – including procedures for catching the recycled ‘product’ (poop and pee) in plastic bags so that it can be ‘shipped’ inland – Christie should feature in the demo.
A study on the adverse effects of the birth control pill (and other pharma pills), via body wastes, on sea life would not be remiss. The study could be informative and entertaining, her pal in the dipper branch and Davy sazookey could, in the name of “earth!” worshiping put in their own 2 poops and a pee worth. Sazooky should fund this odious mission because he “Believes!” – or so he spews (from both ends).
It would be a most interesting experiment for Alberta to shut off oil exports and Quebec to shut off all electricity exports to America – or even just NY State – for one week. When people start complaining, large advertisements should direct them to complain directly to the NY Times … for they’re the ones who demanded it!

Thanks for expanding on my post. Alberta needs to push this smelly fact in their face everytime they open their pie holes.
There’s going to be a pipeline one way or the other. There will either be a pipeline heading south through the US or a pipeline heading west to the Pacific Ocean. The US does not have a say on whether Canada will build a pipeline; Canada is a sovereign nation. There is no reason to suppose that a pipeline to the Pacific will have a different environmental impact from one south through the US. The whole editorial is an exercise in ignorance (which is what I expect from the New York Times).
I agree Ford Prefect @1;26 – Alberta Wildrose must push this smelly fact because UN gal Al @the helm in Alta is singing off Chrissie’s song sheet. It is just a ‘show’ for the pipples; this little girlie hissy fight between the two western fools.
Robert@ 12:48 – that is NFLD hydo that Kebec is selling – and NFLD has not forgotten that fraud (deal). Unlike the west, when NFLD elected a woman, they got a real leader. Lower Churchill hydro will not be ‘given’ to the brat of Confederation.
“But the climate question must be addressed, if only to give a full accounting of the range of consequences of developing the tar sands, an effort in which the United States will be complicit if it allows the pipeline. That includes the effect of destroying 740,000 acres of boreal forest (a vital sink for greenhouse gases); the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted in extracting the oil from the tar sands (a highly energy-intensive process); and the gases emitted by burning the oil. ”
TWO things. 1) If my oil tank leaks the government will expect it to be cleaned up at a very considerable cost under a stringent regulator regime. At the oil sands the publics lands (700000 odd acres) are being re habilitated on behalf of nature at no cost to the taxpayer while at the same time creating a huge economic benifit to the country — win win. 2) the myth that the boreal forest is vital carbon sink is one of the best scams going. The natural cycle of the northern boreal forest over a couple hundred years is for it to burn and any one who has seen a boreal forest in the glory of this final stage of the cycle is well aware of the carbon it returns to the atmosphere. Is Canada refunding it’s boreal forest carbon credits at that point?
“Some people can’t be bought for any price. They are grounded in deep conviction and principle and timeless values. The Yinka Dene and over 100 other First Nations….”
This is from an article at Nat’l Biased Newswatch,by a former federal Liberal candidate,Daniel Veniez, referring to the Noble Warriors of the many “First Nations” that are lined up to blackmail the hell out of everyone connected to the pipeline business.
I have no doubt the pipeline will eventually be built, but it’s going to be along and costly process, not the construction costs so much, but the ransom money that will have to be paid to the various interested blackmailers.
Daniel Veniez, the failed Liberal candidate must have watched too many James Cameron movies,as I’ve never heard the statement,”Some people can’t be bought for any price” in reference to the FN’s,who seem to have made a life’s work of being bought.
Iowa Jim, all too true. Except that you have to remember that American environmental groups funded by American foundation money are vigorously opposing Northern Gateway as well. The approach by the US under Obama would appear to be consistent; no more oil out of Canada’s oilsands anywhere regardless of destination.
Unfortunately Iowa Jim Canada is NOT a sovereign nation, weak politicians recognized aboriginal title, and particularly in BC (the western route) aboriginals claim 120% of the land (get your head around that one) and need to be consulted for any project traversing “their” territory. Because the pipeline might travers 10 or more (guess) aboriginal “nations” it is quite feasible that one “nation” could hold up the project indefinitely.
The watermelons have seized this fact and bribed the tribes, our government stood by and watched this happen, they are now trying to bolt the barn door after the horse has bolted.
By far the best option is to await Obama’s demise and build the southern route.
Talk about emotional outbursts as fact, to use for an argument…..Jema/Ford (shaking head back and forth)
Some facts for you flatlanders:
Sewage is 97% water!
The effluent is screened before release, to a 5mm screen. Before it even reaches the screens, your logs get beat up and eviscerated through friction and gravity.
Logs do not float, nor ever have, been on the ocean, Mr Floatie does not count as evidence (Please!)
The outfall is well offshore, and deep, in a cold water current, for decades, with no problems.
Please show the deleterious health effects! How many people have been sick due to any kind of infection or illness brought on by this outfall?
Still waiting…….
Even Richard Stanwick, the government bureaucrat, Medical Health Officer, came out and said this was a tremendous waste of money, given that the billions would be better spent in the health system directly (He has a point, the cost/ benefit analysis shows little if any benefit burning up $2 billion for appearances sake.)
Might as well tax us to death for climate change, it will have the same effect (NOTHING!) on our health.
What you may have heard, was beaches in Oak Bay closed due to coliform count. This is due to a separate, shallow, twin open drain/sewer that overflows under high water (rain events) truly polluting the beaches, albeit temporarily, in January, when NOBODY swims in the ocean (except leftist eco-twits, but I digress).
I get your issues with inland waters, and needing sewage treatment, the high flow and cleansing isn’t there, and a closed water system can be impacted for long periods of time, due to poor water treatment.
Apples and oranges.
dan at bc.
Right well you are still dumping shit in the sea on purpose. Our pipeline is designed to empty into a boat.
Someone somewhere winds up with you shit if we spill oil we clean it up.
“…. That includes the effect of destroying 740,000 acres of boreal forest (a vital sink for greenhouse gases); the carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted in extracting the oil from the tar sands (a highly energy-intensive process); and the gases emitted by burning the oil. ”
Boreal forest which sits on contaminated land. After that huge oil spill has been cleaned up the boreal forest will be replanted, better than ever, so that’s a point for taking the oil. Not to mention that the majority of oil extraction from the sands won’t disturb the surface forest.
People are going to burn oil. Whether it comes from oil sands or other sources the same amount of oil burnt = the same amount of CO2 emissions, so the difference between burning tar sands oil and not burning it is….zero.
Dan in BC – there is a certain, dare I say it, hypocrisy, spewing from the Leg in Victoria. FYI, I once lived in Victoria and met a wall of silence from the greenie lefties when I dared mention the ‘sewer in the ocean’. You cannot defend the obvious hypocrisy so why try? Sewage is not clean, never has been, never will be – people are ‘stinkers’ and they eat and drink drugs and chemicals that they ‘pass on’. Ford Prefect gave you a fine answer; oil is a natural product; sewage is not.
Why would anyone take economic advice from the New York Times? Or the Obama Administration?
Isn’t that like taking asking Ryan Leaf about how to be a successful NFL quarterback?
800,000.00 barrels a day +.
