I am currently reading Jules J Berman’s “Machiavelli’s Laboratory” …. it talks about the very problem with falsification and fabrication of data, the art of scientific misinterpretation, the art of obtaining grants, gov’t and corporations and evil science. We have yet again another rent seeking bureaucracy. As Nobel economist James M. Buchanan pointed out in his Public Choice writings, the/any bureaucracy is dis-incentivized to solve it’s problem it was supposedly set up for. Problem solved=no more hack jobs/career/pension=off to the dreaded private sector. Bureaucracies have every incentive to grow the problem.
There is no reform. King is dead, meet the new king. The reform is the new form under the same incentives.
Reforming is striking at the branches letting the bureaucratic weeds grow up again. The only way to kill, to use round-up on the choking, non productive bureaucracies is tax revolt. I think the good sergeant above makes the key point. I think you’ll gain more credibility as a researcher if you just admit you screwed up or can’t produce the result you were testing for, rather than being later found out for a fraud. “Publish or perish” isn’t a bad paradigm (it’s as close to capitalism as you get in academia), but if you want to write fiction, perhaps a career in science isn’t for you.

There are some extremely cool things being done out there these days, but the level of fraud in mainstream science and the attendant literature is simply massive. I’d say appalling, but really nobody has taught scientific ethics as anything other than a way to fabricate an excuse for doing what you want for 30 years at least.

What happens in universities is that these research centres become, effectively, fiefdoms supported in large part by external grants.
In order to keep receiving the grants, the centre must publish – and produce ‘newsworthy’ results. So, the pressure to fudge data, to rush tests, is strong. Furthermore, these centres become focused around one or a few key research directors. These directors select the people who may work in these centres – and these graduate students are also funded by external grants. Therefore, the students must not challenge the work of the director. This entraps the work even more.
As for solving cancer, I doubt that this will ever happen. It is, after all, not caused directly by an external agent, such as found in malaria, or the plague, or polio etc. It’s a mutation of cells existing within the body and these actions aren’t always so neatly defined, limited, or controllable. We can reduce some causes (pollutants) but I have my doubts whether we will be able to ever, banish it from our world.
