1. Thanks for posting that, Kyla! It reminds me of how amused/annoyed I was by this “protest” by UBC Students recently.
Fine, protest all you want, kiddies. But how about walking your talk a little too. This would include demanding that your beloved UBC start shutting off the electricity and the heat for a growing percentage of each school week. Start at 10% of classroom hours, then move up to 30%, then 70%.
Insist to your fellow UBC students that this is the “right” thing to do until all of you raise the funds to install solar cells or propellers or whatever other enviro-friendly scheme you think up to provide yourselves with the energy you so nonchalantly and recklessly want to deprive others of.
But they’ll never do it, will they?!

2. Harper must come home after these obama chit chats and say “kids don’t do drugs.”

3. About time somebody show the zero that he ain’t the world dictator yet. In more good news, the mayor of Edmonchuk is going to China with the AB oilmen’s assoc. to promote the oil sands even more.. Now if we could just start selling our power to them at the market price, and cut off some water while we are it,maybe, just maybe, the respectable Americans would wake up and take their country back from the narcissist who is hell bent on selling it to the muzzies!

4. I don’t blame you for being proud; I wish I had a leader to be proud of. Alas, I’m stuck with Presidunce Corky McShortbus. But seriously: we’re working as hard as we can to get this nitwit OUT OF OFFICE in November. Help would be appreciated!

5. you know if you challange the ubc students ask them what scientist say that global warming is connected Green house gas emisson. the only 1 I know is David suzuki and he is a lyer I challanged him 1 time and he got mad cause I challanged him. someother scientist said there were studies about it and wrote books. but then rewrote books rebuttling what they have just talked about. I hope you understand what I am saying. I get mixed up on how to write it.

6. Here’s a very key sentence that should strike a chill in the heart of US government policy planners.
“It will be a long time, if ever, before the United States isn’t our number one export market, but for us the United States cannot be our only export market.”
It balances perfectly with Harper’s statement about the mere possibility of there ever being a “No” in Washington.
In short, not only will we sell oil somewhere else, they might outbid you.
I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s worth repeating. It takes a truly outstanding talent for a US President to so thoroughly alienate that country’s closest ally, largest trading partner, and the most pro-US administration in Canada in a generation.
What’s amusing in all this is some of the Canadian reaction, as personified by the media. Being typically Lib-Left, they are torn among their default anti-US position, their anti-Harper mania, and their dislike of Western oil and Western values. And all of these dislikes essentially conflict with each other.
It’s a truly rare occasion in which a Canadian Prime Minister gets to simultaneously:
1. Squash the green slime as foreign-funded mercenaries,
2. Send a very measured and useful warning shot at Washington,
3. Leave the House Opposition without a single meaningful thing to say,
4. Leave the media with an even better “Just watch me” than Trudeau, and
5. Have the business and industry support firmly in his pocket.
Keystone is very useful for the Prime Minister. Given Obama’s debacle and the targeting of the greens as foreign flunkies, objections to streamlining the regulatory process is going to be enormously easier than it would have been at any other time previously. It’s a once in a lifetime political opportunity, and PMSH is using it very effectively to clobber all of his political enemies.
Yes it’s spring. And schadenfreude is in the air.

7. And the best part, PM Harper smiled and said it so very nicely (Canadian style, eh) – stick your greener than green dream of a North American National Park where the algae don’t shine. lol

8.
I’ve mentioned it before, but it’s worth repeating. It takes a truly outstanding talent for a US President to so thoroughly alienate that country’s closest ally, largest trading partner, and the most pro-US administration in Canada in a generation.
cgh
Harper did well…He mentioned that Canadian Oil is sold at a discount…Hmm that sounds like he may want a 2 price system…One price for Canadian Consumption and the other for EXPORT..
Why should Canadians pay international prices for thier own oil just because the US doesn’t want them to have an energy advantage?

9. Slapshotinthehead:
You’ve earned a double minor for ‘obstruction ignorance’. Use the four minutes to google ‘Canada National Energy Plan Trudeau’, and then come back and tell us what you learned.

10. Slap Shot, that has been tried. It was called the National Energy Program and destroyed the oil industry for a decade. No, we will sell our oil at market value, that way everyone reaps the benefit.

11. It’s better than leaving it in the ground – we need the resource commerce. But it is a damn shame that we are shipping energy to our competator (probably still our enemy too) because the US and eastern Canada buy oil for foreigners who put poot back into this nation.
Hey you eastern Premiers – out away your crack pipes and BUY CANADIAN!!! – support your country ya dipshiit semi-coms!

12. Canada is fortunate to have a serious professional in its highest office. Down here in the US everyone I know is at a loss for words to describe Obama’s rejection of the pipeline. A secure supply of oil from a friendly country that would generate an enormous amount of economic activity for both countries. Why would an American president reject such a sure thing? Because his MO is to weaken, embarrass, and impoverish the United States, because he is filled with deep seated enmity for America and her people.
For the good of not just the USA but the entire world this man has got to go in November.

13. Why should Canadians pay international prices for thier own oil just because the US doesn’t want them to have an energy advantage?
The oil belongs to the provinces, nothing stopping them from having two prices.
Anyway, more than one way to skin a cat. A royalty payment to the people, like Alaska. And Alberta is about to do…

14. Most Americans have become deaf & blind if not Dumb to what Obama has done to their Nations future. The USA bleeds allies from this Puppets hate towards the Western Democracies. Its not their fault really when most of the Media is a hiding the diminishing of the US from them daily. The also cover up this Idiots ravings. Some gets through. Enough to know A Country Ive always respected & cared about is crashing hard by the hand of a Man who loathes his own Nation.
I can only pray for America these days.

15. Let the western UBC student protesters freeze in the dark!
I’m not quite sure why the sale of oil should be any of the government’s business in the first place. The oil should be owned by the companies who extract it from the ground and pay royalties on it, and if they want to sell some of it to Asians, that’s their business.

16. The oil should be owned by the companies who extract it from the ground and pay royalties on it, and if they want to sell some of it to Asians, that’s their business.
Yes, just like it’s the provinces business if they wished to forgo royalties on a percentage and have a made in the province price for fuel.

17. Kyla, nice catch. Good news about Harper and the CPC doesn’t get said enough.
Additionally I’ll remind y’all that this work of genius is by the same man whose budget many didn’t like a couple days ago. Might have to entertain the possibility the budget was the best we could get as well.
Sucky idea to be sure, but worth thinking about.

18. I’m pondering whether I am going to move to Canada if Americans re-elect the empty suit in the White House. Mr. Harper is doing the right thing (and not just in this respect).

19. Phantom, good thoughts. You don’t bring down the mountain called socialism by trying to blast it apart. You take it away one truckload at a time.
Kevin, no not retaliation. It’s the quagmire called Dodd-Frank.
MissAnthropy, no, it’s worse and weaker than that. Obama understands on just about every level how stupid the decision was. It shows how deeply captive to the Green Slime he truly is. Remember, this is the man who put Lisa Jackson in charge of the EPA. The Green scum own him, and they said, “Kill this or we stay home in November.”

20. Right Revnant Dream,The US were always like the level headed big brother to us, now that big brother is deep into drugs and spending OPM at a high rate to satisfy the stupidity of a narcissist. Steven Harper is so level headed and such a long term thinker Oprah’s flying —— must have about wet his Kleins when Steven explained the future of Canadian resources. Long term, this was a subtle reminder to decent hard working Americans, get off your ass in Nov. and send this embarrassment to your great country , packing back to Chicago with his green mafia.

21. Unfortunately, liberals write history books and control what children now and in the future will be taught.
This does not change the fact that WE KNOW that Prime Minister Stephen Harper is the best prime minister Canada has ever had. Bar none.

22. ah yes, tarsands oil was not viable until the price of crude rose, and “alternate”energy will become viable when the price of oil goes through the roof. So Ozero, in colussion with big oil, big bus., and future traders is making sure that his dream of electric cars becomes a reality. What his sheeple fail to understand is that he will destroy the whole USA economical infrastructure in the process!!!!

23. You know what I like best about this Harper statement?
Not only does it communicate powerfully to the Americans, not only is it a beauty poke in the eye to Barry who seriously needs a poke in the eye, and not only is it a statement of Harper’s commitment to the welfare and prosperous future of Canadians.
Its also all 100% true and obvious. No spin, no nuance, no bullsh1t. Straight up.
Its a political and economic truth delivered two-handed with the iron-studded, steel spiked Cluebat Of Reality. Truly a mighty blow, the like of which we haven’t seen since Maggie Thatcher told the Brit unions to p1ss off.
Given this, it will be -very- interesting to see how long the Republicans allow Greenie Dems to hold up the Keystone pipeline.

24. The best part of the video starts at the 30 minute mark an goes for about 5 minutes. I just loved Harper’s take on environmental offsets:
“Offsets are a way of pretending you have addressed
emissions when you really haven’t.”
Harper is a serious man with thoughtful answers to important questions. I do believe Canada is the best led country in the world right now.

25. Mulclair by then is figuring out what he can do for Quebec alone forgetting that Canada is feeding Quebec from the oilsands resources.
Stephen Harper is the PM of Canada whereas Mulclair wants to be prime minister or president of Quebec.
I like the introduction from the DEMOCRAT hostess who spoke highly and praising Canada , PM even Gary Doer was praise and of course the amazement to our economy. What this Democrat Lady of our country make you feel proud.

26. Harper is just getting better day by day and is really advancing Canada’s interests around the world. Mulcair will be eating dust for some time to come.

27. What really pisses me off is Canada gives the US a break on the price of their oil, but we don’t see squat of that at the pumps.
And these liberals try to say a sitting President can’t affect the price of gas, BS.
I would be proud of PMSH too, our 1st Affirmative Action President ain’t working out so good. We are still riding high from the 2010 elections and everyday now Baraka is stepping in his own sheayat if it ain’t another Solar Company going bankrupt or the EPA issuing more Non-Congressional approved regulations then he is dissing our allies or kissing the hand of our enemies or Michelle is taking another damn vacation, so hopefully (w/o ACORN submitting 10 Million Absentee Ballots) we can oust this thieving charlatan come November.
So, My Dear Canadian Comrades, please, by all means continue to scream at the top of your lungs what a train wreck Obama is.
,

28. Might have to entertain the possibility the budget was the best we could get as well.
But…the Liberal budgets were better. Fact: Paul Martin cut government spending in a way Harper never will. Fact: in the new budget, the HarperCons are establishing a crony capitalist 400 million dollar state venture fund. Going into the conservative future by going back to the 1970s!
I read the story. This is…nice. The fact that the Harper faboys are so ecstatic over some words belies their desperation and emotional investment into Father Steve.

29. http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/HarperP
here is the vid.
I can see why the left hates him. Our media does a disservice to us Canadians by downplaying PM Harper’s strengths, there are many, and mole hill to mountaining his weaknesses, which are petty and smallish.
Wherever he goes he impresses and “punches well above his weight class” as is described by the Canadian MSM. I am truly impressed with our PM. The last question/answer of the interview is worth watching the whole vid.

30. Desperation and emotional investment? The man has governed quite well in the past 6 years, and earned his majority government despite the crap he gets from the media. Fact: The world is amazed at Canada’s fiscal situation. Fact: Canada has been named the #1 country in the world for investing. Fact: Canada has outperformed the world during this recession. Fact: If the Liberals or the NDP had been in power during this recession we wouldn’t be the envy of the world.
You can whine all you want about his budget – but Stephen Harper is smarter than you. He’s making sure he will have a long time to make small cuts instead of scaring people away 4 years from now. We can afford that time because of the fiscal situation he has kept us in. He’s keeping his promises, what isn’t there to be proud of?
Desperate definitely applies more to the weird rants you’ve been posting here. You seem jealous.

31. Ah, I see our resident troll is back. A few corrections to your facts, LAS.
Fact, the Liberal budget cuts were possible in an economy with 6%+ annual growth which no longer exists thanks to the mismanagement south of the border and on the other side of the pond.
Fact, Martin’s budget cuts were only possible with massive cuts to health care via cuts to federal transfer payments.
Fact, Martin’s budget nearly destroyed the Canadian military.
Fact, Martin’s budget was accomplished in large part by raising taxes by de-indexing the tax brackets.
Fact, there’s only two ways of state support for R&D, development funds or tax credits. Credits don’t work very well because credit gets taken for all kinds of irrelevant or bogus work. This time they’re trying a mixed approach, including business and universities in the decision making.
But by all means do keep on, LAS. Your misinformation is always good for a laugh.

32. . Might have to entertain the possibility the budget was the best we could get as well.
So far they look as entitled as the last set of clowns. Maybe lead by example and cut their own pensions.

33. Canadian oil going to Asia, no matter what
Helping the enemy become stronger is probably not the brightest thing to do. Even if it does stick it in the eye of the Zero.

34. The Liberal left hates Asian people!
They think they serve restaurant cat meat to unwitting Canadians and believe that Mao did them a service by murdering nearly 100 million to build suicide sweatshops and thousands of coal plants.

Budget 2012 – A Lost Opportunity to Control Spending
OTTAWA, ON: The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) says Budget 2012 represents a lost opportunity for the Harper government to rein in spending and reverse runaway growth in government payrolls during seven years of minority governments.
“Annual program spending will rise $20 billion by the end of the Harper government’s majority mandate in 2015,” said CTF Federal Director Gregory Thomas. “Annual spending will rise $86 billion since the Harper government took office in 2006.”
“Spending cuts announced today are a drop in the bucket,” said Thomas. “Program spending will rise $3.4 billion in the coming year and $4.1 billion in 2013-14. Somebody should remind Jim Flaherty that Stephen Harper promised to balance the budget by 2014-15, because this budget won’t get the job done.”

36. Fiddle >
“Helping the enemy become stronger is probably not the brightest thing to do”
It’s not, but in this case it simply lowers the costs of all the Chinese junk produced from petroleum that we all buy back in NA. It’s not like we haven’t sent much of our manufacturing industries and technology to China already, if they didn’t outright steal it.
This should actually help Obamba, in that if China has some alternative oil supply, he’s free to bomb whoever the hell he pleases in the Middle East with reduced competition from China for oil.
I’m not against selling them a product, providing that we don’t sell them the whole farm in the process. They are going to get it one way or another, especially now that we all have helped make them Mao’s “I have a dream” superpower.

37. As an American I am embarrassed by the Obama administration’s Keystone Pipeline decision. Harper, however, is the adult in the room and realizes that Alberta’s oil can not be held hotstage by American environazis. I hope you Canadians open pipelines to BC and ship it to Asia and open up pipelines to Eastern Canada and send the rest there thus ending the purchase of Middle Eastern oil. Good luck!!!

38. Canadian oil going to Asia, no matter what…
Yeah, right.
It would be nice if all there was to it was to build a pipeline to the west coast and ship to Asia.
But how long has Enbridge been trying to build it? How much longer till they’re allowed to build it?
IF they’re allowed to build it?
Harper is right to want to send it to China, but doing that is just as difficult (even moreso) than shipping it to the US.

39. Great story! Who says that Mr. Harper doesn’t believe in foreign aid?
His government is going to great lengths to get Canada`s dirt & rocks sold to more advanced economies
so they can make stuff with it and sell it back to us!

40. China isn’t the only country in Asia. Even India is around the corner (Okay it’s still a bit of a trip, but boats can still get it there. Tack on penny a liter and it’ gets there…).
All in all, it is good to have a wider market for our resources.

41. cgh – terrific summary. Harper delivered a multi-directional shot at all his enemies.
Harper takes the long view, and leads.

42. Theredsuit, quite right. China, India and Japan are all among the world’s largest oil importers. And they’ve no access to other non-Mid East supplies like Brazil or Venezuela. Only large alternativer source for them has been Indonesia. So yes, it’s worth a lot to them to have access to Canadian oil.
Dirtman, they haven’t started building anything yet. They have to go through the approvals process first. That’s precisely why Flaherty in the budget speech said that the government’s changes to the approvals process would be made to apply to Gateway.
Alex P: “Harper, however, is the adult in the room…”
And you can’t imagine what a strange situation that is for Canadians after decades of foreign policy bizzaro-world from the Left. Even the Bermudan Shipping Magnate had his head mostly filled with clouds. He’s the one committed us to Afghanistan combat missions in Khandahar and to the now-disintegrating F-35 contract. And let’s not forget that the UN’s infamous “Responsibility to Protect” doctrine was authored by Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy, not to mention his idiotic international land mines treaty.
There’s a huge amount of damage that needs to be undone, and PMSH has only begun cleaning out the Augean Stables.

43. Several of the ‘facts’ listed above are just categorically wrong. The balanced budgets of the ’90s were a result of lower expenditures, not income tax increases. Revenues did not increase. Further, it is completely possible to cut spending in this economy indeed cuts BOOST economic growth. Fact: we are in the (*relatively*) good fiscal situation because of the ’90s cuts, which included highly beneficial transfer cuts that forced the provinces to think instead of (only) begging. Our fiscal position has only gotten worse under Father Steve. I am not willing to waste all my time debating ‘sky is blue vs partisan crap’. The deluded will have to snap out of it on their own.

44. LAS said: “…the HarperCons are establishing a crony capitalist 400 million dollar state venture fund.”
Sure. As compared to two BILLION for the gun registry. If that’s the worst, I’ll take it.
Oh and by the way. The Chretien government did cut government spending. For a while. And then after that, not so much right? They did it by inflating the Canadian dollar and taking your fricking wages away from you in tax after tax after tax.
Harper is cutting the bureaucracy. He’s doing it in a full-on propaganda firestorm, where the opposition OWNS the media 100%. The Liberals have never had a hostile media environment for the last 100 years.
So you go ahead and whine about things. That’ll really help.

45. LAS, You’ve never actually looked at the government budgets, have you? Fact is, more than half of the budget balancing came from two huge new revenue sources in the 1990s, and they were roughly equal in weight.
The first was the GST. It was never revenue-neutral as the Mulroney government claimed. But it brought in huge new revenues while triggering increased domestic industrial activity by killing the old manufacturing tax.
The second wsa the de-indexing of the tax brackets. Previously, they had increased every year with the inflation rate. But with the 1987 or 88 budget the brackets were frozen. The initial effect was small, but by the mid to late 1990s, the cumulative effect of inflation had pushed many thousands of taxpayers into higher tax brackets.
“Revenues did not increase.”
Second of all, your rubbish about “forcing the provinces to think” is more mendacious garbage. The provinces did not think. What they did was download provincial obligations onto the municipalities. That’s why we’ve got watermains bursting all over the country, bridges falling down and city streets disintegrating into gravel.
In Ontario’s case, it dumped the funding of provincial welfare onto the municipalities. It also de-listed a large number of provincial highways, offloading them onto County budgets for upkeep.
So these statements of yours, LAS, are just plain wrong.
