The old adage, “Be careful what you wish for”, is sure playing out in Greece. Most of the populace hopped on the Socialist Bandwagon generations ago. Now they’ve ended up precisely where that bandwagon always takes one under socialist rule. Yet in this recent BBC Radio Documentary, young, “educated” Greeks seem shocked & surprised that endless corruption, nepotism, and endless incompetence rules the day and is at the very heart of why their dreams have been crushed and they’re going to spend the rest of their lives wasting away, unemployed. Unless they leave, that is, and admit that capitalism & free markets are the answers to their prayers.

Alberta did fine for many, many years on equalization from Ontario. If Albertans want to set off on their own bouyed by peak oil prices (when the average oil price, in real terms, since 1980 has been $35 a barrel), go for it.
As for McGuinty, as I said, you’ll have to look elsewhere for a fight. I’m baffled over how the PCs and NDP have not brought down the government on last week’s budget and gone for an election on the ORNGE scandal, along with the cost of Hydro, which has killed industry, especially in the north.
And for those Ontario-bashers out there, the province is doing well (economically) considering the recession in North American industry. Easy for Albertans to get all arrogant on $105 oil. It’s not going to last. It’s a spike. And when the price falls, like it did in 1981, you won’t have the NEP to blame for what happens. You’ll have to suck it up this time.
(I expect the usual torrent of “things is different this time because of the Chinese” but I strongly suggest you look at the newspapers of 1980 and every other time there’s been a price spike and you’ll see the same guff.)

We hope not.
It’ll be nice to send all of those eastern losers you speak of home. Their pissing allot of us off.
The bulk of them don’t last long in the oilfield, after a few months of incessant whining they end up on welfare or selling overpriced pickup trucks and appliances to the rest of us.
Sadly, we aren’t in much better shape.

Just like Greece , reality will set in when everything crashes at once. Can you imagine what would happen if China tries to cash in the debts ?
