Ron, I have the same situation, as friend I grew up with is a long time AC captain. He flies long-haul, but ready to pack it in, even though he makes an insane income based on his qualifications and longevity. He said that AC has been a difficult place to work with all the changes. He is definitly NOT a union man though, but he’s been stuck, probably like your friend.
Ever heard the crew conversations from a non-union airline? I have, many times. Not a lot of difference. Exactly the same issues, world over. The airline industry is a cut-throat, nasty place to work, either as a ramper, agent, steward or Captain, for any airline. I hope your friend can retire soon as mine is.
