Holiday Sick Days

Or is it Sick Holiday Days … I’m confused:

Workers who become ill during their holidays will be legally entitled to extra time off work under controversial plans to be introduced later this year by Vince Cable, the Business Secretary.
[…]
Ministers claim that the new regime must be introduced following several European legal judgments.

“Mio dio”, or is it “mein Gott!” … sorry, I don’t know how to speak EUian , least of all think in it.

  1. Why am I not surprised? The EU continues to circle the drain, soon to be joined by the US.

  2. Vince Cable in the minister of monkey business. This just more of the madness that we come to expect from the British.
Another perk for the pampered babies of Britain whilst they make their way along the road to hell.

  3. Considering how generous their welfare is, why would anyone ever bother showing up for work?

  4. And why would anyone bother with being an employer? Isn’t that the role of the government?

  5. I’ve seen it done where I work. You are entitled to sick days and vacation days. If you get sick during your vacation, you can get the vacation days back, and turn those days into sick days. I don’t think its that easy to do however. You pretty much have to have an ambulance and dr’s bill to prove you were actually sick.

  6. Sorry to burst your bubble but I do believe a lot of labour contracts have some sort of similar clause, although I believe that the type of sick that would be considered would be the doctor’s note or hospital admittance and not a 26 oz flu.
In the US of A when I was there a lot of companies were switching from vacation day and sick day plan and giving you more vacation days provided you take those one or two day “sick” days out of that total pot. If you didn’t get the Monday Syndrome in the end you had more total time off. Of course getting run over by a bus and end up in hospital would be out of a separate fund already in place. Friday flu actually decreased with this scheme.
Yeah, I know it doesn’t help out small business or mom & pop shops but productivity actually went up as did attendance. As to the deals over in the UK I think they are screwed id they don’t get the morons to start to change their ways.

  7. Friend of mines aunt back in jolly old England has lived on welfare all her life, has three kids from 3 different bucks, she went to the welfare office and whined that she and her brood had never had a holiday, wanted to see Canader, so they gave her 9000 dollars for her trip, her nephew here in Canader left 20 years ago because of this stupidity, looks like it will never end, what happened to the once masters of the world.

  8. This self-employment stuff just looks worse all the time. I have to do actual work to have somebody give me money. Worse yet, the other person has to like the work. I was clearly brought up the wrong way.

  9. If anyone had any questions as to why Europe is going broke, they’ve just been answered.

  10. It is not uncommon in Canada. I have the same benefit. Your sick days must be certified.

  11. What ever happened to getting sick on your day off and being thankful that you didn’t miss work over it?

  12. I had a policy with my small shop…..
If one of the guys didn’t show up Monday or Friday, his ROE was ready when he did show up.
Only had to that twice…..never had to specify it as policy…..the jungle telegraph figured it out….

  13. sasquatch:”If one of the guys didn’t show up Monday or Friday …”
Well, Monday and Friday make up a full 40% of the normal work week.
So did you get 100% of the sick days in Tue, Wed and Thursday?

  14. Ya but, I still have to pay for all the condoms I use while on vacation, so when is my congressional hearing?

  15. ∞²
    Absent…better have a doctors note…or no job.
    a doctors note…..a job….Otherwise…no work no pay….
My clentel didn’t pay me for sick days…in fact I had to litigate some to get paid.
Usually I picked the lads up on the way in and dropped ’em of on the way home….

  16. What about if, say, you booked a holiday at some resort and it turned out to be a big disappointment?
Maybe get a holiday extension for the spoiled days? Or a negotiated cash settlement?

  17. “This self-employment stuff just looks worse all the time.”
Indeed. In fact any private sector employment is looking less and less attractive in relation to a gov’t job – making it more costly and difficult for companies to attract new workers.
I’ve spent my whole life in a small business that comprised only my wife and myself. The upside was the immense satisfaction we derived by creating a product that others wanted and appreciated.
The downside is that we have had to retire solely on what we managed to save. I don’t have any problem with that – after all, it was my choice.
But our savings are rapidly being being eaten away, primarily by the increasing cost of gov’t and the ever expanding ‘workforce’ they employ.
While gov’t workers enjoy defined benefit pension plans that inflate along with the cost of a bloated gov’t, those like us see our life savings eroded. They enjoy ongoing health benefits, while we pay out of pocket for every prescription.
Am I ticked with B.C. teachers who whine and complain about being ‘bullied’ by a gov’t who is supposed to represent my best interests?
    You bet I am.

  18. My daughter and her friend went on a holiday to China last year. The friend had taken 3 weeks holidays but the trip only lasted for 2 weeks. She got the flu in the 3rd week so phoned into work(she is a parole officer so works(?) for the govt.)and they changed her last week of holidays to sick days. As she said “no fu*ken way I’m using up my holidays to be sick”

  19. Well ~>30 years ago, when I belonged to a Union (NABET LOCAL 11), I took two weeks vacation to update my Kitchen..The day before my vacation started I fell out of the Sky light that I was installing and “Broke my Wrist”… got a Cast and I just keep on fixing my Kitchen for the two weeks…I got back to work and the Union got all my (2 weeks) vacation back.

  20. As far as self-employment goes, I work when I’m sick except for an episode of Norwalk when I couldn’t be more than 20 feet from the toilet. Fortunately that only lasted a day. Another time I had to take a week off after a knee injury requiring surgery, but after I showed up at work with my leg in a brace the number of requests for sick notes dropped to almost zero. That was actually a very nice time to practice medicine as people stopped complaining about their minor complaints once they saw me hobble into the exam room. Not making any money for a week was the worst part of the injury.
Not having to take orders from anyone makes up for the lack of sick leave. Haven’t had a holiday in quite a while and have never figured out what the big attraction of holidays was. The last thing I want to do is sit on a tropical beach bored out of my mind.
What European workers are doing is putting themselves out of work. Soon robots will be performing many of the jobs that the holiday seekers don’t like and the next thing they’ll be lobbying for is extra welfare funds for days that they’re unemployed and sick.

  21. The Canadian Forces uses this practice, though it is rare to see it applied.
Saw a young private, just home from 6 months in Bosnia, burst his appendix the first week of his 4 week leave period. He spent 12 days in Hospital, of which 8 were working days, and he got those back.
Seemed fair to me at the time, still does.
