Many on the right insist this is not a contraception issue, but a matter of freedom of religion: that it is an assault on religious freedom. They are only half right. It is an issue of conscience, whether religious or otherwise; it is an assault on the individual citizen’s mind. It is an attempt by the AliBama state to usurp the individual’s constitutionally protected (Ha! Sorry.) right to freedom of belief, and therefore judgement and the exercise of rationality and autonomy. It is an assault, therefore, on the person. It is therefore an attempt to undo the very foundations of constitutional democracy.

“Tooth level surveillance” is absolutely possible from a purely technological perspective, what remains to be seen is if the heavily armed and seriously dangerous general population of the USA will bend over for it.

To date, the answer has been: Not much. Because in an era of Big Government and Big Business, the key word in the buzz phrase “faith-based institutions” is of course “institution”. Churches have been “go along to get along” since I was a little kid, one of the major reasons I don’t have any time for them. The United Church of Canada, just ferinstance, has been losing adherents so badly the last twenty years that some UCC Toronto churches have become glorified drop-in centers for seniors, with female “parsons” who are gay lib atheist activists in a collar. God is not prominently featured in the sermons, to say the least.
Bottom line, I expect general resistance to Emperor Barry’s police state to harden rather rapidly this year, but I don’t expect Big Religion to be leading the march. I’ll be looking for them on the DemocRat side. You know, where the money is.

As I said above and at my blog, and as Limbaugh said at some considerable length, the President of the USA does -not- have the power to dictate what private insurance will or will not pay for. The powers of the Executive Branch are enumerated in the Constitution. They do not include the power to tell Prudential Life or CIGNA that they WILL pay for an IUD for Mrs. Jones who works at the Catholic Arch Diocese Laundry Folding Mission of Greater Mooseantler Missouri. Or The Pill, or the “morning-after pill”, or for that matter a hip replacement or any other damn thing. Barry can’t do this.
Yet here he is, doing it. If the insurance companies of the USA don’t drag this thing before the Supreme Court and win, then the Constitution won’t be worth the 236 year old sheepskin its written on. If the churches don’t rise up en mass and say F- YOU and dare the feds to drag the lot of them to jail, then they’re a bunch of paper tigers dressed in fancy shirts.
Like I said, going to be an interesting summer. We get to see who’s a paper tiger and who’s willing to go to jail. Also going to be interesting to see if the Congress has the balls to impeach this guy. Because before November they may have to, just to get the election done.
The point is that Obambam thinks religion is a simple superstition rather than deeply held conviction. I am a Christian because of the truth I see in its foundations. I am not a statist because of the fallacies I see in its foundations. Shallow thinkers such as Obama are quite incapable of realizing that their religion can and will be accosted and proven unpalatable to the many who will seek to change and modify it.
